Top seed Roger Federer made short work of Nicolas Mahut on his return to the Rotterdam Open.

The world number three broke once in each set on his way to a 6-4 6-4 victory over Mahut. Federer was appearing at the hardcourt event for the first time since winning it seven years ago.

Live tennis fans saw Andy Roddick manage to overcome his injury problems as he beat Denis Kudla 6-7 7-6 6-4 in the second round of the SAP Open in San Jose.

Roddick had been forced to retire in the second round of last month’s Australian Open when he was playing Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt because of a hamstring injury but picked up an ankle problem in the second set of his game against the Ukrainian-born Kudla.

Great Britain's Fed Cup captain Judy Murray believes her team's strength in depth could be crucial when they meet Sweden in the Fed Cup World Group II play-offs in April.
