Stanislas Wawrinka caused the first surprise of the 2013 ATP World Tour Finals by beating Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-7 (0-7), 6-3 in the opening game of the event at the O2 Arena in London.
The Swiss has been in good form at the back end of this season and that has continued on his debut in the competition.
Wawrinka served the better on the indoor surface which helped him to secure the first set after nine games.
There was nothing to separate the two players before a tie-breaker in the second set. However, Berdych failed to drop a point as he secured it 7-0 to keep the game alive.
Despite levelling the match, the 2010 Wimbledon runner-up was still making lots of unforced errors and that proved costly in the third set when a double fault allowed Wawrinka in to pick up the key break point. After 2hrs 25mins, the world number eight finished the match which puts him top of Group A as the other two players compete today.
Last evening, Juan Martin Del Potro defeated Richard Gasquet on the same court in the second singles game of the competition.
The former finalist had to come from a set down to get past the Frenchman 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-5.
Since the US Open, Del Potro has won 16 out of his 18 matches which has seen him win two titles, the Japan Open and the Swiss Indoors. There have also been final for him in the Shanghai Masters where he was beaten by the perennial favourite
in the tennis betting, Novak Djokovic.
Del Boy will now face Djokovic and Roger Federer in his final two games of Group B as he looks to secure one of the four spots in the semi-final. People who bet on tennis can find great odds for the clash
