Federerís Struggles Continue

Roger Federerís dismal run of form continued with a second round exit at the Swiss Open at the hands of world number 55 Daniel Brands, with the former world number one losing in straight sets against his big-hitting opponent.

Following his shock second round exit at SW19, despite being one of the perennial
Wimbledon winners in the past, Federer suffered defeat to world number 114 Federico Delbonis at the German Tennis Championships before the top seed returned home for the Swiss Open.

But playing in front of his home fans failed to inspire Federer, however, with Brands racking up 11 aces on his way to a relatively comfortable straight sets victory in Gstaad.

Switzerland's Federer has now lost to players outside the top 50 in the rankings at his last three tournaments, including his Wimbledon defeat, when he was beaten by Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky, who was 116th in the world.

It was the early Wimbledon exit that resulted in the 17-time grand slam winner dropping down to fifth in the world rankings, his lowest ranking in ten years.
The 31-year-old Swiss star will now be looking to finish a disappointing season with a strong showing at the US Open at the end of August and in the Wimbledon schedule next year.

Unless Federer can win the title at Flushing Meadows, 2013 will be only the second year since 2002 in which he has finished the season without a grand slam title to his name. But at the moment itís pretty tough to see just how the five-time US Open winner will be able to win the final grand slam of the year.

One issue for Federer is his ongoing racket issues. Since his Wimbledon exit, Federer has been trialling a larger racket head in a bid to change his run of form. But a change of racket has so far failed to bring a change of form for the former world number one.
