Fognini Follows Up German Success

Posted 07-23-2013 at 12:36 PM by Philip Oliver
Fabio Fognini has won back-to-back tournament on the ATP Tour after claiming the International German Open in Hamburg. The victory comes just a week after he picked up his maiden event in the Stuggart Open.

The 26-year old has been a runner up on two occasions on the tour before his wins in Germany. He was beaten by Giles Simon on clay in the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest last April and then back in September he was denied once again in a final by Martin Klizan, this time in the St Petersburg Open in Russia.

The Italian went into the International German Open as the number two seed and looked to be the victim of qualifier Federico Delbonis in the final when he was a set down and had to face three match points. However, he fought back to win the second set on a tie-breaker 8-6 before sealing the decisive set 6-2 to pick up the ATP 500 event.

Delbonis got off the perfect start by capturing the first set in 49 minute. The crucial break came in the 10th game to wrap up the opener at 6-4.

He then looked to be on course for a surprise tournament win when he raced into a 4-1 lead in the second set. Nerves may have played a part in the outcome in the end but the Italian has been so used to winning in recent weeks and was not prepared to let his run of winning results come to an end just yet.

Fognini will now be looking ahead to the US Open, the final Gram Slam of 2013. He managed to reach the third round of the event for the very first time 12 months before going out to home favourite in the tennis betting odds, Andy Roddick.
