Sampras backs Murray at US Open

Posted 07-25-2013 at 03:39 PM by Philip Oliver
Pete Sampras has admitted Andy Murray has the ability to go on and win more Wimbledon titles following his memorable victory at SW19 this summer, with the American backing the Scotsman to be the man to beat at the US Open in August.

Sampras, who won seven titles at the All England Club during his sensational career, believes Murray’s Wimbledon success will be the first of many, but admitted it would be a tough ask to go on and surpass the record of seven Wimbledon wins held jointly by himself and Roger Federer. Certainly the tennis betting odds suggest that record is safe.

"I don't know if someone in the next 10 years will be able to win five or six Wimbledon tournaments. This was Andy's time at Wimbledon. It was Andy's event to go and get and he did it. He's definitely the man to beat at the US Open,” admitted Sampras

"I think the biggest thing for me is Murray in the past 12 months has just stepped up. Roger and myself, our game on grass was so dominant. I think Murray can win some more and Novak Djokovic, but I don't think that dominant game is out there that's going to win it seven times. But I could be wrong."

But before any thought of multiple Wimbledon titles, Murray will be looking to defend the US Open title he won in such dramatic fashion last year at Flushing Meadows. That maiden grand slam win, combined with his Olympic gold medal, gave Murray the belief that he is more than capable of winning the big tournaments in one of the game’s most competitive generations and punters who bet on tennis are backing him to do just that.

On current form, Murray will go into this year’s US Open knowing he is the man to beat at the moment. It would certainly top off another amazing season for Murray if he managed to defend his title.
