Lisicki Powers Past Kanepi

Posted 07-03-2013 at 10:15 AM by Philip Oliver
Sabine Lisicki followed up her success against world number one Serena Williams by defeating Kaia Kanepi to reach the last four at Wimbledon once again.

The German made it into the semi-final of the Championship in 2011 as a wildcard but was eventually beaten by Maria Sharapova.

She has never made it into a final of a Grand Slam as a singles player, despite frequently entering as an outside favourite in the Wimbledon betting, but has the opportunity to do so if she can overcome Agnieszka Radwanska.

The former doubles finalist at Wimbledon beat Kanepi in straight sets 6-3 6-3 on Court One. It was during the longest game of the match that she managed to pick up the important break to take the opening set.

The Estonian, who beat Britain’s Laura Robson in the fourth round, looked to have got herself back in the contest when she broke early in the second set, thanks to a double fault from Lisicki. However, the 23-year old then won four consecutive games to gain control once again.

Radwanska is the highest seed still left in the competition and she faced a last eight tie with former Grand Slam winner Li Na. The opening set of that game went into a tie-break with the Pole winning it 7-5. Last year’s runner up did lose the second set 4-6 but held her nerve to win a tense and decisive third set 6-2.

On Live Wimbledon quarter-finals day there were also wins for both Marion Bartoli and Kirsten Flipkens. The pair will now meet on Thursday for a place in Saturday’s final.

Bartoli was runner up herself in 2007 when beaten by Venus Williams. The French number one beat Sloane Stevens 6-4 6-4, while Flipkens overcame former winner Petra Kvitova in the surprise result of the day 6-4 3-6 6-4.
