Gasquet Suffers Shock Loss in Rotterdam

Posted 02-20-2013 at 09:24 AM by Philip Oliver
Richard Gasquet’s superb start to the 2013 season came to an abrupt end last week as the French world number 10 crashed out of the Rotterdam World Tennis 6-4 6-4 to Marcos Baghdatis.

Up against the unseeded Cypriot, Gasquet struggled to control his returns and failed convert any of three break points across the two sets. He won just 29% of his return points, while winning just 66% of his first serves compared to Baghdatis’ 78%.

He looked tired on the Rotterdam court at times, a sign that his early 2013 exploits have his the 26-year-old hard, and he suffered from a spirited Baghdatis experienced in taking down weakened opponents.

“Richard was probably tired, he’s played a lot of tennis this season,” Baghdatis told reporters.

Indeed, Gasquet will be tired after winning Doha in early January and the Open Sud de France title in Montpellier just days before Rotterdam.

The Frenchman went into Rotterdam buoyed by these two title victories and carrying just one loss all season, but immediately suffered a scare against Serbian world number 39, Viktor Troicki, who took the first set to a tie break.

Although Gasquet won the second 6-1, wrapping up a two-set victory, Baghdatis will have noted the tired legs of his second-round opponent and used it to his advantage.

This defeat will come as a stark warning for Gasquet to slow down his exploits in 2013 and be more selective with his tournament choices.

The fourth seed surprised many fans of tennis betting by agreeing to play Rotterdam just days after his Montpellier victory and, with his chance of making the top eight this year very likely, he should not risk causing himself an injury by playing too much tennis too soon.
