Tim tips Andy for greatness

Posted 12-31-2012 at 01:36 PM by Philip Oliver
Former British number one Tim Henman believes the stage is set for Andy Murray to dominate men's tennis in 2013.
Murray enjoyed his breakthrough season in 2012 – winning Olympic gold at the London Games before claiming his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in September. He defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller to become the first British male to win a major in 76 years.

The Scot is expected to build on his success and become a multiple Grand Slam champion. He has the perfect opportunity to swell his trophy cabinet next season, according to Henman.

"If you look at the top four, there's a question mark over Nadal and how he's going to come back. I really hope that he comes back at his peak as he brings so much to the game. Federer's not getting any younger, but he's still playing great tennis. How long can he sustain this level?" the 38-year-old told The Tennis Space.

"Djokovic and Murray are the two stand-outs, obviously with Djokovic being number one again. It was an incredible achievement. But I think Murray is now ready to take his game to an even higher level."

The world number three reached the last four of the Australian Open and the French Open quarter-finals in 2012, as well as a first Wimbledon final.

Murray will begin the 2013 season in search of glory at Melbourne Park, where he is a two-time finalist. Henman believes Murray can kick his year off in perfect style in January.

"I think he's got as good a chance as anyone at the Australian Open. The way he works in the off-season, that will give him such a good platform. He's got the confidence of getting his first slam under his belt," Henman added.
