Stosur hopes to hit ground running

Posted 09-28-2012 at 09:57 AM by Philip Oliver
The popular conception is that rest is often the best cure.

Sam Stosur will be hoping that age-old saying proves prophetic when she gets her Japan Open campaign underway this week.

The tournament is certain to provide the competition that the 28-year-old needs to blow off the cobwebs off the back of her disappointing mission to defend her US Open title and as part of her efforts to reach the prestigious season-ending championships.

Defeat to the world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the last eight is no embarrassment but the manner in which Stosur relinquished her Flushing Meadows crown in a third-set tiebreak loss will have undoubtedly hurt.

Even more so, reckon those who watch live tennis online, when you consider Azarenka went on to lose the final in New York City to Serena Williams in the same heart-breaking circumstances.

The Queenslander would have been confident of keeping hold of her Grand Slam title off the back of a demoralising grasscourt campaign at Wimbledon and the London Olympics.

It was typical of the peaks and troughs that have followed Stosur in 2012 - remember she fell at the first hurdle in her home Grand Slam under the weight of expectation from Australian tennis fans.

After Tokyo, Stosur will contest key events in Beijing, Osaka and Moscow and cannot afford any US Open hangover if she is to make the elite eight-woman WTA Championships in Istanbul from October 23-28.

Stosur, seeded ninth and a favourite of the line betting community, will not need reminding she lost first round last year in the competition to Maria Kirilenko.

However, this time around the deposed Flushing Meadows champion will not have overwhelming pressure of her rivals wanting to take her head off.
