Berdych takes it a match at a time

Posted 11-08-2011 at 12:08 PM by Philip Oliver
Tomas Berdych is only one win away from securing a place in the ATP World Tour finals, but refuses to think about the London showpiece just yet.

The man from the Czech Republic showed some real battling spirit to beat Fernando Verdasco in the second round of the Paris Masters.

Berdych took the first set comfortably before a roller-coaster second set, which saw Verdasco fight back from 5-2 down and stave off five match points. But the 2010 Wimbledon finalist held his nerve and eventually took the match, winning 6-3 7-5. Those following the tennis odds will have been impressed.

The fifth seed in Paris is now just one more victory away from sealing his spot at the O2 Arena, but is wary of looking too far ahead.

The 26-year-old stated: "I made too many mistakes in the second set, but am happy that I could come up with two solid games to see it out.

"I'm not trying to focus too much on that (London). It could affect my game a little bit, but now I just try to enjoy and play tennis."

Berdych has endured a mixed season to date, reaching just one Grand Slam quarter-final – at the Australian Open. He was beaten in the first round at Roland Garos and was forced to retire hurt during the last 32 at the US Open. Fans will be wondering if he is set to feature in the ATP tennis betting.

But the world number seven has showed signs in recent weeks that he is recapturing some form and collected his first ATP Tour title of the year last month, when victorious in Beijing.

He will now face either Janko Tipsarevic or Alex Bogolomov Jnr for a place in the Paris quarter-finals.
