Clijsters planning 2012 comeback

Posted 10-17-2011 at 08:25 AM by Philip Oliver
Kim Clijsters has missed large portions of 2011 through injuries and that meant the Belgian had to miss out on Wimbledon and the US Open. Now she is back and planning to kick-start her 2012 by going for another title at the Brisbane International tournament.

It was a pretty miserable season all round for Clijsters, an ankle injury sustained dancing at a wedding meant she missed most of the clay court season and thus went out of the French Open in the second round. People following the tennis betting would have been disappointed.

Then a further ankle problem means she missed Wimbledon and then an abdominal problem at the Rogers Cup forced out of defending her US Open title and she admitted she was missing the rest of 2011 to fully recover and ensure she would be back ready and fully fit for 2012.

The six-time Grand Slam winner is the defending Australian Open champion and will want to be 100% at Flushing Meadow so she plans to look for a repeat of her 2010 Brisbane International tournament, though will face a big challenge with the likes of Maria Sharapova, Sam Stosur and Serena Williams all confirmed for the tournament. Those who bet on tennis will be keeping a close eye on things.

Clijsters said she is "looking forward" to the competition and she is hoping to get her season off to a great start in Brisbane.

"It is going to be a tough contest but also be a great chance to test your form leading into the first Grand Slam," she added.

"Having won the Brisbane event in 2010 and then the Australian Open last year I am looking forward to getting back on the court in Australia to defend both my titles."

The 2011 US Open champion Stosur is likely to have a passionate home crowd cheering her on in her hometown tournament in Brisbane and the world number seven will be hoping this support can take her to victory here and in the Australian Open.
