Djokovic plays down injury fears

Posted 09-21-2011 at 02:47 PM by Philip Oliver
World number one Novak Djokovic has stated that the back injury that forced him to retire in Serbia's Davis Cup defeat to Argentina is not too serious.

The Serbian was playing Juan Martin Del Potro in his side's semi-final tie in Belgrade, when he had to concede the match through injury. However, he has since declared that he just requires rest before he can return to the tennis court. Those following the tennis betting will be relieved it is not more serious.

It was during the third game of the second set that Djokovic fell to the ground in pain with his back problem, and he decided he could take any further part in the match, in which he was a set down after losing the opener 7-6(5).

It has been a tremendous year for the 24-year old, who had picked up three of four Grand Slam titles in the sport this season, and has just lost once in completed games, that coming in Semi Final of the French Open against Roger Federer. Anyone following things on will have known how dominant he was.

He may now have to miss the Shanghai Masters and China Open in Beijing next month. Djokovic is hoping to be back for the two events in China, but admits only if he is fully fit.

"I hope I will recover by then," he said. "Anyway, I won't risk the worsening of the injury and that's why it is hard to predict for how long I will rest."

It is the first time the Serbian has had a serious back injury in his career, but managed to see out the final major of the year, despite carrying the problem. Since then, the injury has got worse and the amount of tennis the world number one has player this season is now starting to take its toll.
