A Champion in Paris...Not Roger
The loss in the semi really hit me hard. This was the perfect chance for him to win Roland Garros. He lost and it hurts. But people mistake honest truth as bravado and cockiness. It has been said before, a first class claycourter beat the most complete player on his weakest surface. If you poll the players, what is their favourite surface? A high majority will answer either clay or hard court. Not many will say, grass. That's something special.
This loss hurts, but it is not the end-all-be-all. Roger is exquisite on grass; excellent on hard court and very good on clay. He was right, he can beat Nadal anyday on any surface. Even on clay when he plays his best. When Roger plays his best NO ONE is annals of history can beat him.
Roger will have another chance at Roland Garros, but now he must focus on The Championships- Wimbledon. A third championship and 5-0 in GS finals would be perfect. I imagine it would keep him No. 1 for the rest of the year. And a win at The Championships will be great motivation for a repeat at Flushing Meadows.
I love all you Fed Fans! Let's stick together and give Rogi some slack. This is only his third loss of the year, 6 months into the year. That's pretty good. And I DO NOT think he needs to change his (semi) coach or as Bud Collins calls him "The Guest Lecturer". He probably needs more time throughout the year with him.
I think we Fed fans have been a bit spoiled. Roger hardly ever loses, granted two of his three losses were in the semis of a GS. That hurts. So close to THE GS. I think Roger needs a coach on an almost full-time, if not 3/4 time basis. I know he has proved that he can win 3 GS in a year without one. But it is not a sign of weakness to seek full-time assistance.
This loss will only fuel the flame that burns within Roger. This is a Champion of a rare level. Only few are here...Sampras, Borg, Laver, Graf, Evert, Navratilova. Roger is already there at 23. And if anyone one doubts me on that...take it up with the legends of tennis and commentating that say the same.
