Gulbis Claims Marseille Title

Posted 02-25-2014 at 02:22 PM by Philip Oliver
Ernest Gulbis beat Jo-Wilfried Tsona 7-6(7-5) 6-4 on Sunday in the final of Open 13 to pick up his fifth career title.

The big serving Latvian overcame the second seed of the Marseille event in front of Tsonga’s home crowd in France, which was available to fans of live tennis online on the bet365 website.

It was Gulbis’ second ATP tournament win in five months as he secured the St Petersburg Open in October. His latest victory has earned him 250 ranking points as he continues his march up the standings and leaves him just outside the world’s top 20 players.

The 25-year old went into this competition as the number three seed. He started his campaign in the second round against Robero Bautista-Agut in which he was forced to three sets against the Argentine before coming out on top.

Gulbis then faced a trio of French players before lifting the trophy. In the quarter-finals he defeated Nicolas Mahut 6-3 7-6(7-1). That came prior to a clash with the number one seed Richard Gasquet in the last four which went the Latvian’s way 6-3 6-2, while in the final, he completed the victory in straight sets.

The champion hit 14 aces and finished with a 77% success rate on his serve against Tsonga on Sunday afternoon. There was nothing between the two players after the opening 12 points which meant the first set went into a tie-breaker. Gulbis held his nerve to come out on top 7-5.

In the second set, the number’s three seed’s serve was strong once again and helped him see out the match as he picked it up 6-4 to reward bet365 punters who had backed him in the betting.

Gulbis ensured he kept up his 100% record in ATP singles finals as he extends his record to 5-0.
