Being a practice player on the Davis Cup team may have really helped Young. More than anything, I think it probably boosted his morale. And it sounds like they were all willing and eager to help him get better.

well it seems that donald young is having the results that the usta was waiting, but two years before. The difference is that this guy one or two years before, received incredibles wild cards to play atp events and that helped him only to improve in his ranking. but now they are giving him wc in futures and i think that it´s ok because a tenis player always starts playing futures and satelites, and not atp. Anyway, donald never played a qualy of a future(incredible) but now i think he can improve a lot with this futures in usa, the same as nishikori!!. well that´s all, byeeee

You guys need to be careful before predicting great success for Donald Young based on the results of one tiny futures event. This isn't the US Open :p There are tons and tons of players who have reached semifinals of futures events and never amounted to anything :p

Who predicted great success? Did somebody delete their post before I could see it? Because in the three posts you responded to, nobody said any such thing. And if I did predict great success, it wouldn't be based on one Futures event.

Forgive me for saying something remotely positive about Donald Young. I know that it's taboo around here.

The difference is that Donald Young is still not 18 years old yet. You cannot deny his results as a Junior player and now he seems to be maturing and beating legitimate pro players. It seems that people were counting him out too soon, imo.

It is ironic that you are a Tim Smyczek fan, but are pooh-poohing Young's results. What has Tim Smyczek done that Donald Young hasn't?

And I didn't say anything negative about him at all... so before you people get your panties in a bunch, maybe you can read what I said?

Semi Final Results
NISHIKORI, Kei (JPN) def [5]WILSON, Brian (USA) 6-1 3-6 6-2
YOUNG, Donald (USA) def [4]LEVY, Harel (ISR) 6-4 2-6 7-5

Semifinals:

Kei Nishikori (JPN) def. #5 Brian Wilson (USA) 6-1, 3-6, 6-2
Donald Young (USA) def. #4 Harel Levy (ISR) 6-4, 2-6, 7-5

Doubles Final:

Young/Nishikori def. Wilson/Evans 7-6(5), 6-4

The final will be a battle of 17-year-olds. I've heard good things about Nishikori. He recently won the Luxilon Cup, a 12-person invitational tournament for juniors during the second week of Miami. He beat out players like Fernando Romboli (ITF #3), Ricardas Bernakis (ITF #14), Gastao Elias (ITF #33), and Michael McClune (an American junior with an ATP ranking of 678).

Nice week for Young, win or lose tomorrow. To win the doubles title (his third pro doubles title I believe) and beat last week's USA F7 finalists, along with the #2 and #4 seeds, is a good week for him. Hopefully he can cap it off with his first pro title.

When's the last time someone on these boards said that Young will be the #1 player in the world? Positive comments about him are FAR outweighed by negative comments. That much is indisputable. If you're trying to moderate expectations for Young, perhaps you should look more closely at those who constantly take shots at him.

Regardless, nobody in this thread predicted "great success" for him, and certainly not based just on this tournament, so perhaps you should take your own advice and read what others actually say.

 Don't go all sarcastic on me. If you check my signature, you see that I actually support many players who are not Top 50. I don't think 'only' being Top 200 is a laughable feat. But it's still very different from what many people predicted for him.

What part of 17 years old don't you understand? People also assumed he'd probably grow more. He obviously has talent and it does seem like he's improving substantially. I don't know why it's so bad that people got excited about a guy who was having the kind of results he did at such a young age.

I remember a couple of years ago people telling Nadal fans that it was too soon for them to get excited about him and that he was a long way from being a top ten player. Within like a year he was #2 in the world. The same thing happend with Andy Murray.

Why don't we just let things play out before we declare people overrated?

Your post, to me, sounded like you were writing off Donald Young and saying that people had too high of expectations for him. All I was saying is that it may take some time, but the kid is still only 17 years old (almost 18) and he may still end up being a top player in the world. The early hype was probably too much, be he may still end up living up to people's expectations (or come close to it).

You may disagree with that (which is perfectly acceptable), but I'm just looking at his recent results and seeing a player who looks like he's starting to mature and figure out how to win against professional players.
