Former French Open champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov has pulled out of this year's tournament at Roland Garros.
"Kafelnikov, semi-retired since the start of the season, has decided not to take part," said a statement from the organisers of the Paris event.

The Russian will be replaced in the draw for the tournament which begins on 24 May by Spain's Alex Corretja.

Kind of surprised that the YK news merited the headline on the BBC tennis page. Did anyone really expect him to play? And what does "semi-retired" mean? I know he's not officially announced anything, but after what Safin said at the AO, I thought Kafelnikov had gone for good...

Sorry for Rafi because I wanted to see him play (on TV) but:

:woohoo: :bounce: :woohoo: :bounce: :woohoo: :bounce: :woohoo: :bounce:

He was only one place below Vicente at the deadline. And this is his first main draw appearance without a WC or having to go through quallies first :D .

MATHIEU OUT OF FRENCH OPEN

France's Paul-Henri Mathieu has been forced to pull out of the French Open from May 24 to June 6 with a left wrist injury.

The 22-year-old, listed 81 in the ATP rankings, picked up the injury in January during the Madras tournament in India and has failed to recover from it.

He will be replaced in the French Open draw by Denmark's Kristian Pless.

 for Paul-Henri. It's amazing how his ranking points have held out and kept him in the top 100. Replaced by Kristian? I didn't know that his protected ranking was that high. Plus he hasn't played since a Future in February.

I checked that yesterday. Kristian was in the top-100 before his injury lay off. IIRC, he was out from March 2003 to January 2004.

Rusedski is next-in, followed by Levy... unless there is another player with protected ranking I'm not aware of...

I assume Thomas Johansson is not playing Roland Garros because he wants to concentrate on the grass court season. James Blake may not play either but I assume he will wait until the last moment, in that case he will be replaced by a lucky loser.
p.s there should be a post on who you guyss think will get wild cards for French Open.
My guess: For aussie: Luczak
Frenchies: Mahut, Di Pasquale, Boutter, Monfils, Patience, Llodra. Lisnard

Only 1 Italian in the draw, hopefully Italy can get 2 or 3 from the qualies into it but thats doubtful. Italian tennis sucks at the moment! Forza Volandri and Seppi.

He was #115 at the entry deadline

Indeed Vassallo has to qualify, he is a good player who is slightly improving but I am unsure if he will ever get to the top 75 and sure he will never be in the top 50. But I may be wrong. Anyway good luck to him in the qualifiers.

so James has officially withdrawn?

jayakris

I suppose many of the players are playing elsewhere and did not expect the qualifying cut to fall much below 260 or 270 ..

It has now fallen to #309 Hajek, with next in players being #313 Gilles Simon #315 Zovko and #320 Bohli ..

After #261 Haehnel, the only players who are still listed as possibly playing qualies are, #274 Etlis, #281 Gicquel, #285 Marcaccio, and #309 Hajek. Everybody else is playing elsewhere or have withdrawn ...

They will be making the draw by 6 pm today at Roland Garros, says the fact sheet. So the cut may end at pretty much inside #320 I guess.
