It was a busy day at the 2004 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships with six singles matches and five doubles matches on a beautiful sunny day in Houston.
Tommy Haas opened up play on Gallery Furniture Stadium against Robby Ginepri in a tough first round clash with Haas winning in two sets. It was the first clay court match for Haas since the 2002 French Open after he sat out most of the 2003 season with a shoulder injury.
Haas: "I've had good days, bad days. But right now the shoulder is holding up well. I still have to do manual therapy, but as soon as I don't keep working on it, I can tell."
"I think my last clay match 2002 at the French Open. Almost two years ago, which is quite a long time. The courts are nice here but the balls are moving quick and playing a little faster, which is fine for me, not bad in my eyes. I've been playing mostly indoors the past few weeks with Davis Cup, but you just have to adjust and be professional about it."
