Does anyone know why Zimonjic won't be playing doubles this weekend?
It says (www.daviscup.com) that bozoljac and tipsarevic will be playing?
Is that a mistake or... :(

I wouldn't like Chile and Croatia. Janko is good on grass,he played great in Queens, beat A.Murray, and in the 1st round of Wimbledon played amazing tennis vs. Roddick,I've never seen him playing better... Switzerland or Czech Rep. in Belgrade?! 18000 people in Belgrade Arena,I wouldn't mind. Surely,I would like Belorussia,Romania . Hopefully,we'll be lucky on Wednesday!

Croatia isn't so bad. Didn't Ljubicic retire from Davis Cup when they lost earlier this year? So at the moment all they have is Karlovic and Cilic and Ancic (since hopefully he'll be recovered soon). Kovilovo hall has 1500 seats, too small for thousands of tennis fans who would like to be there...
The organisation was not at the highest level, clay was put there just few days before DC tie vs. Georgia, and not used by players,so it was pretty bad and soft (I don't know if that is the right word),but it was really dangerous for players, and thanks God nobody got injured (except poor kid Chanturia  ).
We'll see... They know what's best for them, and we'll be there to support them...

A great opportunity for the Serb Tennis Federation to generate some income. Result by no means a foregone conclusion despite Serbia going in as favorites.

Am I the only one that is suspicious about organisation of this match?
First there was information that they would start selling tickets between 15th and 20th of June. I phoned Tennis Organisation 2 hours ago,and they told me the tickets would be available in the beginning of September.
They will need Arena at least 16 days before the match, and that will cost them fortune. They hope the city and Government officials will help, but no sign of them...
I'm not sure if they will actually have Arena for this occasion.
Any information,...anyone?

Yes probably, but only if I manage to have tickets :) It's funny because I have friends going there too but to cheer for the aussie team! so we should be 3 to cheer for serbian team and 2 for the aussies lol would be funny ;)

We can arrange that...;)
When the information is out, you'll say what tickets you want (1st,2nd,3rd category,...),and someone of us will buy them for you. Or you can buy them over Internet,I guess they'll sell them that way, too.
Can't wait!

Errr... Have you guys triple-checked with your tennis federation? There's some scary news from DavisCup.com... :scared:

No tickets left for Serbia clash (http://www.daviscup.com/news/newsarticle.asp?articleid=14228)

With all the recent success of Novak Djokovic, Janko Tipsarevic, Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the Serbian Tennis Federation came up with the idea of releasing tickets early for Serbia's Davis Cup play-off against Australia.

The plan has definitely worked, as the September event sold out for every day within hours. Also, with the capacity of Belgrade's Beogradska Arena at 19,962, this already assures the highest attendance in the history of the competition outside a final.

I'm sure there will be some scalpers looking to make a profit. That's too bad for some of you guys, but it's good for Serbian tennis that there is so much interest there now. Hopefully they'll get a dual WTA/ATP event :D A big one would be nice.

Why would they not put Ilija in the doubles though? He's done SO well for Serbia in Davis Cup doubles. I remember the tie against Great Britain, and Ilija was the best guy of the four on the court, and I just saw him play in doubles quallies with Dick Norman and he's a maniac on a doubles court. Nole is the better singles player for sure... but I just think it's taking a chance since he doesn't have the doubles experience Ilija has  There's a lot of time left of course... that might change. I mean, the last thing anyone would want is Nole to be worn out for the singles. I'm on the fence about this decision....

Who's more opportunistic -- and we mean this as a compliment -- than Nikki Pilic? First, he has an eye for talent, spotting both Djokovic and Ernests (singular) Gulbis, the young Latvian who broke out this tournament. But he is also the Bora Milutinovic of Davis Cup tennis. He was once Germany's captain. Two years ago he coached Croatia to the Cup. Now we're told that he's working in an advisory role with the Serbian team.

No.1 Serbian 'racquet',and no.3 in the world rankings, was present at the ceremonious opening of the 'Adidas' store in the center of Belgrade. After that he said that our national Davis Cup team was a favourite in the tie vs.Australia in Belgrade Arena (21.-23.Sept).
Djokovic said that the Davis Cup was the greatest team competition in 'the white sport',and added that it was real luck that Serbia would play that match in front of it's home crowd.
'I'm optimistic because of the results our players have made lately... Of course,we musn't underestimate our opponents, but the fact that we'll play in packed Arena is encouraging. I'll try to win the first point for Serbia, the doubles match will be very interesting, and our guests are slight favourites in it. But,I believe that the final result will be good for us'-said the US Open finalist.

What's the news on the clay, guys? Seems like it's not yet fully ready :scared:

Fitzy slams Belgrade court as B-grade

Australian captain John Fitzgerald has condemned as unplayable the makeshift court surface being prepared for this week's crucial Davis Cup tie with Serbia and says the match referee may have to intervene.

Led by Lleyton Hewitt, the unfancied Australians had their first practice session inside Belgrade's enormous Beogradska Arena today - and it was anything but pretty.

Hewitt and Fitzgerald were dismayed at the diabolical state of the drop-in clay court to be used for the World Group playoff starting Friday.

Moist underfoot and easily scuffed up, the court resembled a grassless backyard cricket pitch as dodgy bounces continually befuddled Hewitt and teammates Paul Hanley, Chris Guccione and Peter Luczak.

At one point a disbelieving Hewitt cried "oh my God" as he was stopped in his tracks when a section of the baseline caved in.

The Australian spearhead stood hands on hip and shaking his head as a courtside repairman rushed to hammer the line back down.

When the practice match resumed and Luczak asked the score, Hewitt replied wryly: "Three craters to one".

Fitzgerald, already suffering with the flu, did not see the funny side and soon after was locked in deep discussion with Hewitt about how the Australians should best handle the worrying situation.

"As it is now, it's not playable," Fitzgerald said.

""It's got a bit of improving to do. I don't know how quickly they can improve it."

The court was only laid last week and Fitzgerald was hopeful it would dry out in the coming days.

If it didn't, Fitzgerald warned "it's up to the referee", Englishman Mike Morrisey, to come up with a solution.

Morrisey was due to arrive tomorrow, presumably blissfully unaware of the storm brewing in Belgrade.

"I think it will improve ... it would be highly unlikely that they would end up with a product that's not good enough to play on,' Fitzgerald said.

"But it's got to be good enough."

The disgruntled visitors have been given the option of practicing on another indoor clay court nearby, but Fitzgerald said that wouldn't do.

"All we want to do is get somewhere where we can hit, but you want to play on the match court because then you play in the atmosphere," he said.

"I mean, it's so different in here. It's a massive stadium. Compared to our other court, it's chalk and cheese. So you want to hit on this.

"The other one is a small little club. It's clay, but clay's like having the MCG and Telstra (Dome). They're different."

Encountering a problematic playing surface on their first official day of practice together was the last thing the Australians needed with Fitzgerald, coach Darren Cahill and hitting partner Alun Jones all sick.

Cahill and Jones were so crook they were not even able to attend training.

The Serbs, to be led by world No.3 and recent US Open runner-up Novak Djokovic, firmed as favourites today when No.2 singles player Janko Tipsarevic - who'd been in doubt with a torn rib muscle - declared he would be fit.

"We know that on paper we're the underdogs," Fitzgerald said.

"You talk to the locals here and they think it's a foregone conclusion. But we don't mind that.

"All the players are upbeat. We're happy to be low-key and be the underdogs."

Should Australia lose, they would be relegated to the Asia-Oceania qualifying zone for the first time in a decade, while Serbia would be promoted to the World Group for the first time as an independent nation.

I agree to an extent but "three craters to one" sounds awful.

Let me assure you in terms of organisation Serbs are much worse than the Greeks.
They should postpone it, really, I mean that's just not acceptable. It should be fair on the players, and if its not hard enough it could cause injuries.

Going by this eurovision should be a blast next year :tape:

Relax  if the surface is unplayable it disadvantages the Serbian boys as well - wouldn't want anyone to get injured practicing on these ridiculous Davis Cup surfaces like poor Stani Wawrinka did in April :sobbing: It's only in everyone's best interests for the surface to be ready in time - I don't care how high or low the ball bounces.

Hewitt falls at Davis Cup training

Lleyton Hewitt may be in doubt for Australia's Davis Cup playoff against Serbia this weekend after suffering a leg injury during team practice in Belgrade.

Hewitt, who only on Tuesday joined Australian captain John Fitzgerald in publicly complaining that the state of the court surface was diabolical, took a tumble chasing down a forehand and was unable to continue.

He gingerly limped off the temporary clay court at Beogradska Arena to receive treatment from Australian physiotherapist-chiropractor Andreas Bisaz.

If Hewitt was to miss the match it would be a massive setback to Australia's prospects of avoiding relegation from the World Group.

He was pencilled in to play both singles and doubles and, realistically, probably needed to win all three of his rubbers to save Australia from defeat.

Before his fall, Hewitt and Fitzgerald had been very vocal in their criticism of the playing surface, complaining to match referee Mike Morrisey.

"It's pretty dodgy at the moment. Yeah, it's pretty soft underfoot a lot of it. It will want to improve by Friday," Hewitt said after Australian team practice.

"If you've got to play on it, you've got to play on it. But, right at the moment, it's not up to scratch for Davis Cup competition.

"This is the premier team competition in our sport worldwide and (we are) obviously playing in front of 20,000 people in a big stadium.

"The decision will be up to the referee, but it will want to improve a lot before Friday."

Morrisey inspected the surface on Monday after arriving from England, where he fielded an informal complaint from Fitzgerald, and said he was satisfied the court would improve sufficiently for the three-day tie to go ahead as scheduled on Friday.

Fitzgerald and Hewitt initially expressed their dismay at the poor condition of the surface on Sunday after a series of mini craters developed during their first team practice at the indoor arena.

Clearly, they don't believe it has gotten any better since.

But the vastly-experienced Morrisey, a grand slam supervisor and respected as the No.1 tournament referee in world tennis, said he expected the court to hold up given a few more days to settle.

"It's typical of a temporary claycourt wherever you are in the world in that it needs time to settle down, it needs to have players practising on it, it needs to be rolled," Morrisey said.

"What we've done with the practice schedule is allowed time for that to happen during the day, not just in the mornings and the evenings.

"I think everybody here realises that there's work to do.

"But seeing the improvement from one day to the next is normally a sign that the guys are on the case.

"It's pretty standard, to be honest, for a temporary claycourt. Any temporary court, whether it's clay or grass - or not a synthetic surface - needs a little bit more attention.

"So we do face these issues from time to time."

Under Davis Cup guidelines, there is a range of penalties available to the competition committee should the host team fail to prepare an adequate court.

"In the really most extreme cases, there's the possibility of calling off the tie," Morrisey said.

"But, to be honest, calling off the tie is not really on the agenda because it's not in the best interests of the competition. I'm not sure if a tie has ever been called off.

"It would be if it was really dangerous to play. But I think it's going to shape up here fine."

There is much at stake in Belgrade.

If Australia lose, they will be relegated from the World Group for only the second time in 30 years and Serbia would be promoted to the competition's top tier for the first time as an independent nation.

Poor Hewitt :scared: He's one of my least favorite players and I still feel bad for the guy. If the court is that bad ... :scared: Hopefully Morrisey is right though and it will settle. He seems to think this is usual for a temporary court.. so hopefully it works out, and hopefully Hewitt is alright. I want Serbia to beat the Aussies with the Aussies sending forth the best team they can :D

If the court is causing injury though... I mean... it can happen to our guys too... :scared: They need to get this sorted... ASAP.

Hi guys!
I feel so disappointed, but not as near as Janko is with the audience today.
And he has every right to be.
I don't know what happened to the people...Some of them went home after the first match, most of them came to be seen (obviously not to be heard),just sat there...some didn't even show up...
Anyway, the atmosphere was really good untill the fourth set of Janko's match.
Then EVERYTHING stopped. Everything went the wrong way...The magic disappeared.
Everyone was silent. WTH?! WTF?!:smash:
I was tired,but I cheered him through the whole match! I lost my voice,but I don't care.
I clapped and clapped:clap2: :clap2: ,my hands were really red and big like doughnuts, and hurt, but I don't care!
I was there to support our team all the way...
I couldn't believe, people were indifferent,apathetic...20 Australians were louder than thousands of us. Nole was so pissed off after the second match, told the people that if we wanted them to win we should cheer and not care about the umpire and about the rules...I felt so bad although i was among those who tried so hard all the way...
I just hope Nole and Nenad will win tomorrow, and we'll have the chance for the final victory on Sunday.
I hope the atmosphere will be better, and that people will really help our guys ( after the match,Janko said he didn't feel it was played in Belgrade and we were hosts).

(I had a great view at Djokovic family, especially Marko and Djole :hearts: )
