NRL Round One .. start your engines!

Mr Flamboyant

Only one extra game per round this year but the card looks huge! Of first concern though is friday night's double header so let's talk about it ..

Melbourne -12
Wests Tigers +12

Brisbane -4.5
NQ Cowboys +4.5

Prices for Melbourne and the Cowboys have shortened ever so slightly so the early money is clearly coming for them ats ... Can't help but feel the Cowboys might just spoil the Broncos' party again .. Probably not as emphatically as they did last year (36-4) but Brisbane seems a bit unsettled in a few positions, especially with Karmichael Hunt a surprise tip to play halfback .. Wayne Bennett has made it known he's not been happy with the form of a few during the pre-season and is clearly not playing favourites with the group that won the premiership last year.

Interested to hear thoughts on the pipe opener in Melbourne .. Early rounds traditionally present value in taking teams recieving such a big start, but then again Melbourne destroyed Newcastle by 40-odd in rd one last year .. They'll be revved up for this after their premiership dream unravelled in '06.

Anyway enough from me .. Fire away fellas!

P.S. this weekend I'll be bidding a very sad farewell to Cairns  and shifting to a new post on the Gold Coast ... will be dealing closely with the Titans and later on the GC 'Blaze' (new NBL franchise) so I'll try to pass on more of that rolled gold fade material I used to re the Taipans!

going to be a very hard round to pick. being the 1st round, you dont know how teams are playing.

sometimes when picking a NRL round one winner it is best to look at a clubs history rather than last years form.recruitment or injuries.

like warriors, they havent won a round 1 match since 2000, dragons are the worst starters in round 1.

teams like raiders have good starts winning 6 of the last 8 matches since 98. they also beat manly at home last year at the fortress.

roosters are the best round 1 starters winning 8 of its last 9 1st round matches with their only loss at in 99

It will be interesting to see how Inglis goes at 5/8 he could be even more devastating than when he was playing in the centres. And apparently the storm have picked a 17 old giant on the wing (bigger than Inglis) Israel Folau and is potentially as good as Inglis I'll be interested to see him as well.

Looks like I'll end up being on Joey and his Knights SU this weekend to take down the Dirty dogs.

Lets get ready to RUMBLE :D I think the Storms will absolutely trash the Tigers at home and a 3-4 try margin is mostly likely to occur atleast!!Bot much of a feel with the Queensland Derby although both teams look to prove themselves with Cowboys having a bad yr and Broncos losing the Club challenge but they go very deep which is a concern!!Still think the Storms will win it this yr and the only Upset is a Bulldogs vs Storms GF where the Dogs can match the Storms at full strength!!

If the Knights forwards hold their own Newcastle have an advantage in the halves

Holdsworth - Steady
Roberts - bit of talent

vs

Johns - Greatest halfback ever
Mullen - talent

BTW Centrebet have put total game score $1.85 over $1.85 under how pathetic,

Just returned from Titans v Dragons, early days yet but it seems pretty clear that both of those teams will struggle to make finals this season ... St George in particular looked very pedestrian .. although it's understandable given the exhodus of stars during the summer .. the game was very much the Gold Coast's to win but too many silly errors cost them ...

Phuck my luck,4 mins into the game and Sonny Bill knocks out Joey!!There goes the intensity game i was after turn out to be free flowing with shitty Defence then the Dogs bomb the game to top things off, also no score after half time by the Dogs is an absolute joke and gonna look at their next opponents cos Folksy gonna run em hard on the track!!!!

Definately laying some dough on the Rabits. It'll be a cracker and that over seems good enough to sale over. Both teams are quite good this season.

Souths attack was ordinary in the charity shield but the media are building them up be careful not to fall for the hype.

Roosters have owned them in the past winning 15 of last 16.

Can someone tell me why they will not win tonight?

The reason why i am backing the Rabits are because they have totally revamped there side and should have a chance against the Rabits. This game will be a defining match that will show what the fans of the Rabitohs have aquired during the off-season. Their side looks incredibly well balanced and with a havles pairring of Williams and Smith,a backrow of Kidwell,Fa'alongo and Sutton, props like Asotasi and a backline of Merrit,Peachey and Hegarty I really have high hopes for the Rabits and their is no better way to start than against the Roosters.

The Roosters have owned the Rabitohs in recent years but Russel will be counting an a win tonight.

Just for my own record keeping :wavey:

Shocking quality game thus far (though the weather is not helping) - good stuff from the Bunnies so far though, great line defense from them as well a few minutes ago.

Everything going to the Bunnies, but i'm not letting up yet. The Roosters will scratch back. I hope they don't, but it seems unlikely in a derby game.

Ya hoping the Bunnies can win (& cover the +2.5) as well. Also wouldn't mind a win in a few tipping comps I'm in.

MNF for NRL a big winner in my book. Nice for a change to be able to watch a game with your full attention (no other sports on).

I'll be having a ping on the Roosters to win the wooden spoon this week.

20,000+ crowd on a rainy night, have to say definitely a great start to MNF

I'll join you on the spoon bet, definitely will be value there. Chooks were flat our dreadful, offered nothing in attack all night. 0 line breaks sums it up.

Minichiello, Fitzgibbon and to a lessor extent Anasta, Nutley and Wing aside that is a very ordinary team. A couple injuries to those guys (some of whom are vulnerable to injury right now) and lookout.
