Mark my words: If Russell beats Baghdatis, he will beat Nadal in the forth round.

Btw 19-2 for Russell in 2007. 19 wins in straight sets! :eek:

Well, Russell has definitely arrived on the scene. Breezing by challenger series is one thing but to take out a strong top20 player at an AMS tournament is just what he needed to achieve right now to keep momentum going. Baghdatis better beware next round.

Probably only 2 problems left for Nadal.

Roddick which could go either way and Federer who would probably be a slight favourite to beat Nadal.

Roddick vs Nadal is starting to look like a real possibility now.

Talk about the war of the desperate! Nadal, who is afraid of losing all momentum going into clay season with SO many points to defend, and poor Andy, who spent his entire press conference beating off questions about the AO and how brilliant Roger was, hm. is.

I'm not surprised at all. Russell is very in-form at the moment and Berdych has been collecting poor results since the AO.

Great for Michael, he has had so much bad luck in his career and I hope he can keep the streak going.

I'd say this result doesn't mean anything for Rafael, of course he's probably happy because the guy he dislikes is out, but this doesn't increase his chances in the tournament at all.

Rafa = Fed Killa

Not an expected win, but not the shock or embarassment that Berdych fans are making it out to be.

If you've been following Russell since his return from injury, a breakthrough like this could be foreseen. He picked up last year and as has been pointed out, has been the very definition of ON FIRE this year. He's 15-0 in challengers this year....Yen-Hsun Lu and Jamie Baker share the honor of being the only two to even take him to a tiebreak as he hasn't lost a set. He also won a challenger late in 2006, so his challenger streak is really at 20-0, although in the 2006 challenger, he had the gall to lose a set to Paul Goldstein in the semis 5-7....e won the last two sets 6-0 6-1 though to atone for this egregious mishap.

His two losses this year have come in a five-setter to Lleyton Hewitt at the AO (following three straight-setters in qualies), and a Elimination Round loss to Ryan Sweeting at Delray Beach in which Russell retired. The fact that he had just stepped off a plane from Hawaii (where he won the Waikoloa CH) probably had a lot to do with it.

And now in Indian Wells, Russell knocked off the player he was compared to in a thread last week, Marc Gicquel, before picking up his biggest win as yet, over Berdych.

He's been a increasingly recurrent topic over 2007. Some people have been outright dismissive of his ability to reach the top 50. He's a hard one to gauge - a significant chunk of his career has been squandered due to injury, so it's hard to figure out what part of the top 100 he fits in when healthy over a long period of time. Part of me has to believe he can't possibly be this good - it's not uncommon for players to go on these sorts of runs. But yet, he's been doing it for basically three full months now (counting the challenger in late 2006 as a week). Before this tournament, projecting him has been a dicey issue because while he had been completely dominant, many of those wins were against challenger-level players who all inherently have holes in their game. But now that he's had two convincing wins over top 50 players - one of them on the verge of the top 10, the pieces are starting to fall into place. If Michael Russell can stay healthy - never a sure thing - he's going to make the top 50. At this rate, he could very well be the third ranked American by the end of the year, although perhaps that's pushing it: Fish may be hard to overtake....but who wouldn't take Russell over Ginepri at this point? I, for one, am enjoying the ride and I'm rooting for the hard-luck little guy to make the best of it. And let it be said I've been hyping him in my Challenger Roundups since Day 1, so let no man call me a Johnny-Come-Lately. ;)

Well, as with his unfortunate injuries, Russell picked a very unfortunate time to pull off this win. The bandwagon competition with Canas will be fierce......you've really gotta feel for Mike. He might have thought losing the five-setter to Guga at the FO was bad, but this???

Yes, this is true and the bandwagon award is huge and I just wish I thought of it earlier. Russell was doing well for sure and then the nugget Canas decides to beat Federer.

Losing to Guga and Hewitt in 5 sets is nothing compared to not winning the bandwagon award.
