Michael Russell - What to expect?

The guy is 18-2 this year. All 18 matches were won in straight sets! And his losses was against Sweeting and he was injured and against Hewitt in the AO.

Plus he is probably the best claycourter in the United States. He has reached the 4th round in RG and he can do it again with this shape.

So, where he is going to finish the year?

Don't give a fuck where he finishes the year, as long as he can remain injury free, then everything will look after itself.

Funny people actually talk about him now, not surprising, but not quite enough support for bandwagon player of the month though.

Oh

Maybe a good run in IW and Miami can fix that! :)

IW, well he'd have to beat Berdych and he won't get a WC to Miami, though it would be good if he did.

Yes, he isn't afraid of clay and he even knows how to move effectively on it and that's rare for an American.

he has a winnable first round at IW against gicquel, but lets face it all his wins have come on the american challenger circuit which isnt the strongest around. saying that, i am a fan of his and i think he can break top 50

He's the type of player who could pull off some big wins, as you said he has experienced some good clay results, we all know about the match against kuerten at the french. If he stays fit and injury free, he can do good things and its up to him to do the talking on court.

Im suprised to see some of you think he can be top 50 or even better. The majority of his wins are coming against guys who are ranked worse than 200. Unless he shows us he can beat some of the regulars on tour than i doubt he is going to keep on moving in the rankings.

He beated Gicquel tonight 6:3 7:5. And he beated Lu and Kunitsyn already this year.

And although he lost, he showed against Hewitt that he can reach Top 50.

I voted Top 75. I would be so happy for him to break the top 50, though. Good luck, Michael.

I reckon he will end up somewhere between 75-80, but Safinator made a good point that he has to start winning more matches on the tour and as long as he doesn't have too many injury problems, he should be fine.

He looked great in his wins against Berdych and Garcia-Lopez at IW. He had a nice match against Chela, but it did seem Chela was always in control. Too bad he couldn't have pulled that one off. He could have played in the main stadium against Nadal. He probably would have lost to Nadal, but the exposure would have been nice.

I was at IW. I watched all 3 of his matches. He really looked great. Very solid strokes and he moves pretty well too. I was surprised how "easily" he defeated Berdych. He really was in control of that match from start to finish. Russell also seems to have pretty good mental toughness. He was down 2 breaks to Chela in the second and managed to get 1 back.

Crowds were small for him. Sam Querry had a much bigger crowd for his near win over Davydenko. In that match, I was really disappointed with his play in the 3rd set. He seemed to just give up. Very bad body language.

As for the poll question, in Jan 2006 he was ranked 256. In Jan 2007 he had moved to 143. Pretty remarkable. Even more remarkable is that he is now ranked 67.

Given the poll choices, I think he will crack top 50 this year barring injury. Probably not realistic to think he can crack the top 20 this year anyway. I will take a wild guess and say that his highest ranking for the year will be 43.

As I watched him last week, I kept thinking that, if he were only a few inches taller (he is listed at 5'8" and I think that is pretty accurate) that he could probably get a few more free points off the serve.

His strengths are his consistency from both wings, his mental toughness (so it seemed to me. No sign of cracking against Berdych, no. 11 in the world), and his movement. Not tremendous movement, but better than most.

I will be watching him closely this year (my bandwagon player of the year:)
