Why isn't Donald Young qualifying?

This is not intended to spark a Donald Young bashing session. But seriously, why isn't Donald trying to qualify for Indian Wells? He may have been over-hyped but he did take a set of Djokovic at the US Open which shows he can play a bit. He will be eighteen in a few months time and surely he should be getting experience with the big boys rather than rely on wild cards.

Why are peeps talking about him so much? He's just one of many challenger players trying to come up. What's so exceptional about him? Has he ever been at least in quarterfinals in ATP tournament? Has he beaten some top 10 player? Top 20?

He is playing in USA F6 Futures this week .

I'm just pleased he hasn't been given a wildcard and he's down in the trenches earning his way to the top of the game - in the long run it will do him a lot more good than being handed drubbings by much better players than he currently is.

1. He isn't good enough to win challenger matches yet let alone win ATP matches
2.It wouldn't be good for his confidence losing at the level repeatedly, hence building himself up at futures & challengers.

He's not big enough or strong enough to win on the ATP. Case Closed.

it may well be because he sucks, would lose and giving him a place in the quallies would be a waste

He's young (no pun intended) so with age he should fill out a bit, I don't think height should matter though, but it depends on his gamestyle.

Him and Brian Vahaly should hangout together...the two most hyped never wases of American tennis. Jan-Micheal was very talented, he was hyped for a reason, he's just had some injury problems. Young and BV have incurable talent problems.

Yea, I mean you can point out Grosjean, Chang, or even Amanda Coetzer (on the women's side) but lets be honest size does matter. That's why Sam Querry will be top 20 by the end of the year and Young will be...well...yea....not.

But seriously, why isn't Donald trying to qualify for Indian Wells? The cut-off for qualifying was 261. Young couldn't have gotten in without a wild card.

Yea it does to an extent but it doesn't mean he can't have a good career, like you said, take chang and hewitt as examples, and rochus for a 5"5 guy is good player, but like you said there is a limit for them and its their height. As the majority of cases height=more power.

He's already 67, he's made the quarters of the last two american tourneys he's played, he made the third round at the aussie and took a set off of Robredo before bowing out. He's top 20...he's baby Roddick...get off me!! get off me!!

Sam "master of tennis subtlety Querrey, top 10?

Oh I do hope not.

"I just go out there and hit the ball hard,” Querrey said. “It's the same plan for every match. I want to serve big and control the points with my forehand."

I love a well-rounded game and keen tactical insight.

Donald Young has already been badly mishandled by the USTA by being given far too many ATP wild cards before he was ready. He has shown very little at the ATP level because it's very hard to jump from the top of the ITF juniors circuit straight to the ATP without playing in futures and challengers first, particularly for someone like Young who has not fully physically developed yet (unlike someone like Querrey, who has physically matured a lot more).

Right now Young is playing on lower levels, where he belongs. This is what's done:

USA F1:
1R d. (q)Ruben Gonzales 6-1 6-4
2R d. (WC)Dmitri Vlasov 7-6(9) 4-1 ret.
QF d. (4)Nikita Kryvonos 6-4 6-3
SF l. Conor Niland 1-6 2-6

USA F2
1R d. (SE)Adriano Biasella 2-0 ret.
2R d. (JE)Pavel Chekhov 6-4 6-4
QF l. Vladimir Obradovic 6-4 2-6 1-6

Costa F1
1R l. Jan Stancik 3-6 1-6

Dallas Challenger
1R l. (2)Simon Greul 6-7(4) 3-6

Joplin
Q1 bye
Q2 d. Ryan Stotland 6-2 6-2
QR d. (8)Michael Johnson 6-7(2) 6-4 7-6(3)
1R d. (WC)Ryan Sweeting 6-4 6-2
2R l. (4)Jesse Witten 6-7(4) 3-6

USA F5
1R d. (q)Justin O'Neal 6-3 6-4
2R d. Alexander Kudryavtsev 4-6 6-2 ret.
QF l. (4)Ivan Miranda 6-2 5-7 0-6

USA F6
1R d. Nicolas Todero 6-4 6-4
2R ???

11-6 so far, rather inconsistent like many young players. Nobody knows how well he will turn out, but I can tell you that he's more likely to reach whatever his potential is playing 3-4 matches a week rather than spending 50 minutes on the court losing 6-1 6-1 to Mardy Fish or whoever.

I'm not a huge DY fan, but I'm not strenuously rooting for the 18 year old to fail, like most of MTF is. He's picking up valuable and necessary experience at the futures level; time will tell if he's able to develop the consistency and weapons to succeed in the men's game. Anybody who makes a proclamation that he's the next great American player or that he's a bust is an idiot.

What skills make Querrey top 20 in the near future? He appears to have less to offer Juan Martin del Potro.

Some excellent points there Balerion, it is extremely risky to predict career success for upcoming players or put the bar too high, too early. The only thing we know at this point is that giving a stream of WCs to Young was too untimely. On the other hand, it is much more likely for an upcoming player to fail than to succeed.

As for Sam, the common thing with Roddick is that he has a fast serve. He doesn't move as Roddick does and I don't see the mentality of a grinder who can systematically exploit the opponent's mistakes for the occassional break of serve. Therefore he needs to develop his net game but this will take time. I would be shocked if he breaks into the top-20 this year.

Wow my posts have become the subject of some real satire. Sam is hardly Ivo. He will be top 20, I don't care if you don't think his game is pretty or not. In my opinion Ivan's game is the ugliest I've ever seen but I still respect his place in the top of the game...he's talented.

When you have a big one-two like Sam, all you have to do is find confidence and you will rise in the rankings. I mean if someone like Del Potro has a bad day he's more likely to lose than Sam is, when you have a serve and forehand that big even not playing well you are still going to hold your serve 90% of the time and find the occasional break. It's hilarious that you guys are defending Roddick and calling him a "grinder" "systematical". Um...watch tennis more often.

As peter fleming said once, if Rochus was 6'1 he could well be trading places with Federer for the no.1 spot.

Young doesn't have a big enough game and lacks mental strength, in a few years talk about him as a top 100 player.

Scoville Jenkins and Donald Young are two of the most shat-upon juniors in MTF history. It has nothing to do with race. You are the one interpreting this through the prism of race, not me. I'm just making a joke about the fact that two of the most hated juniors in these parts were playing each other.
