What is the list for the "Fan favorite award" based on?
Fish, Ginepri, Massu, Monfils ( :rocker2: ) are nominated, but not Ferrero, for example...

I wondered that myself

They have 24 players in the poll, most of them are picked by ranking of course. Only Youzhny, Nieminen :( and Ferrero are missing from the current Top 24 and they have been replaced by Massu, Monfils and Ginepri

Interesting additions/omissions. Logically you would think that they're going by top 24 (weird number btw) ranking for EOS 2006... but then there's like Fish and Ginepri in there, and no Jarkko. WTF? Part of the ATP "player marketing" no doubt. :|

The best comeback award should be given to players that have comeback successfully from injury, not drug cheats such as Canas.

Sportsmanship Award to Blake?

Am I missing something here?

Like.......... the joke maybe?

03-08-2007, 06:18 PM
Yeah, as someone mentioned, it'll have a lot to do with when the players voted. :tape:

I personally think it should go to Phau for giving his opponent a free point at San Jose when the other guy's ball was erroneously called out, but I don't know if a Feb. 2007 incident qualifies someone for a 2006 award. :shrug:Probably not, and would they give it to someonen for one incident like that?

Deboogle!.
03-08-2007, 06:22 PM

Nope... andy didn't get it for the whole Rome thing :p

That was off court, otherwise a similarly selfless deed on court would have been rewarded.

He should have won for the french open match ball thing with Lucho. Didn't he concede a MP and then go on to lose the match?

He should have won for the french open match ball thing with Lucho. Didn't he concede a MP and then go on to lose the match? That's what I was referring to - it was against Verdasco in Rome. He was given the Humanitarian award at some point - perhaps for the year the fire took place, but that's not why he was given it, I don't believe.

(just before some people accuse me - i'm not saying Andy should've won it last year, just saying that he wasn't given it for a similar single act of sportsmanship)

Maybe s/he is referring to the size of the ranking jump for Querrey (which is I think the biggest, if not then it is among the biggest) in 2006.

Maybe s/he is referring to the size of the ranking jump for Querrey (which is I think the biggest, if not then it is among the biggest) in 2006.

Even though he got a few ATP wins, Querrey's progress came mostly from challengers, and he finished the year outside the top 130. He only established himself at ATP level earlier this year. IMO it doesn't really compare to players such as Del Potro or Korolev who broke into the top 100 already in 2006 and achieved more expressive results at ATP level, not to mention they're one year younger.

You know that Gilbert will lobby for Murray to win most improved. Canas, as someone else noted as well, did not play much on ATP so an ATP award is probably not going to happen. More realistically, ATP probably does not want to taint their big show with people having thoughts of why Canas had to make a comeback in the first place.

The most improved award would be more interesting if it was for guys like Gicquel or Becker whose improvements were somewhat unexpected.

Technically he came back in March, ranked 50 smth. It's just for the record. I don't think he can be Comeback Player of course. ;)

Totally understand what you're saying but has Djokovic had the wins over top 10 players that Murray has? The only current top 10 players I could find in 2006 that he has beaten is Robredo and Haas - hardly top 10 stars.

Whereas Murray has beaten, Fed!, Roddick, Davydenko, Ljubicic, Gonzalez.

Take it a little further - the highest ranked player Djokovic beat at Metz was 35 (Grosjean) and for Amersfoort 28 (Coria). Whereas for San Jose Murray has to beat the number 3 and 11 in the world.

Then you have Murray's SF at Canada to Djokovic QF at Madrid TMS then Murray has gone further at US Open than Djokovic but Djokovic has gond further at Roland Garros than Murray.

I don't think it's an easy call to decide the most improved between them. But I think beating Fed and the other wins over top players could give Murray the edge.
