Ancic faces long illness lay-off

Byrd

World number 11 Mario Ancic faces two months on the sidelines after being diagnosed with glandular fever.
The Croatian has a mild case of the illness but seems certain to miss the Masters Series events in Miami and Indian Wells.

But he is expected to recover in time to play at the French Open, which gets under way at Roland Garros on 27 May.

Ancic has only won four matches this year, the last coming at the Australian Open where he reached the last 16.

Wow I feel for the guy especially after what happened before the US open series.

He'll be out (http://msn.foxsports.com/tennis/story/6519328?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=199) for 2 months, missing both IW and Miami, probably back for Roland Garros.

For his sake, I hope he got it from kissing. Poor kid.

That really sucks :(

I had mono once, so I know how awful it is. It took me about a month and a half to get over the actual sickness, but I was still weak for about 4 months after that. It takes forever to get your strength back.

Get well soon, Mario.

Ouch, that sucks :( Poor Mario

I remember that JHH had the same years ago and rarely play in that year, Mononucleosis suckssssssss, firstly the virus is eliminated during the first 18 months (only the infectious phase) but the EBV is latent on the organism for the entire life (as no contagious) that's the reason of why the patients with mononucleosis have too bad health later because the inmunology system turn depressed after the acute phase. (see what happened with JuJu after that...)

Maybe Cobalt60 could give us a better explanation.

It's no sooooooooo serious for a normal person, you feel depressed in health for a long time, but you can carry on with the desease. I mean is serious too, but is more serious for a sportsman that needs to stay 100% in general health (without considering injuries ;) )

Now THAT is bullshit. I´ve had mono myself, and the problem with the disease is, you can feel a bit ill and under the weather for as long as a month, before the actual disease even begins. And you probably don´t suspect anything serious because you have a sore throat and a bit of fever. Once the real mono begins, you´re pretty much in bed for several weeks and a total recovery might as long as a couple of months. It´s likely that Ancic was playing in that "pre-mono" condition, when he was just feeling a bit ill, but suspecting a normal flu.

He is going to be able to start very light running next week. His goal is to come back at Wimbledon, but, if he isn't 100%, he'll skip that as well.

I think he's already ruled out RG for sure

Mono is a very annoying disease. Just recovering from it myself. If you haven't had the disease, hope you will never get it.

yeah, mario has such a bad luck,he is very talented and has a potential for big things, but always when he plays good,he gets injured.but the good thing is that last year he had 2 comebacks and after every comeback he played better then before.all he has to do now is to slowly get back to trainings and get his body in shape because he barely moved last 2 months.he's a fighter so I'm optimistic about his comeback.

That's a massive blow, to Mario and the tour. He could have made his usual 2nd week appearances at both RG and Wimby but now he's going to drop over 1,000 ranking points. Very bad luck.

I hope his career doesn't keep going like this.

My friend had this, and he stills gets tired and ill as the disease has messed up his immune system so badly. Good luck though Mario.

Yes he mustn't rush back until he's completely healthy - better to take the short-term points hit and rebuild from there, than attempt to come back too soon and risk doing permanent damage to his immune system and impacting the rest of his career.

Get well soon Mario - mono is a bitch.

Well that shouldn't happen to a person with a normal health. Mono is a shitty disease but it doesn't have any long term consequenses.

04-10-2007, 02:33 PM
Aw i hope he's better soon   Such a shame to see a player with his talent be blighted with something like this, is it similar to what Henin had a while back cos she was ill for a long time.

I'm afraid Mario can pretty much write this season off  But the most important thing is that he gets well and doesn't try to come back too soon. Mono can last for a long time :crying2:

Poor Mario
Well, he is 23, so he has a lot of time left :) And can be in top 10 again for years :rocker:

This season is dead, look how many points is to defend just from clay-court season: Rome QF, Hamburg SF, Roland Garros QF,...then Wimby QF, Beijing F, St. Petersburg winner, Paris QF,...
