Coria and Gaudio history?

Can someone please explain what the history is between Gaudio and Coria? Its obvious there is some sort of personal feud between the two.

Also, who is considered more friendly, Guillermo or Gaston?

Thanks.

Well, Steve-O, I really don´t know why this personal fight between them, but you know, often the press does a lot for this. Whatever, I guess that the main reason to this is the fact of they are, probably, two talented players which don´t like much each other´s style or point of view, nothing very important. I remember that one or two years ago, here in Argentina, there was organised a match between them, with strong advertisement and it resulted a simple way to make money for the people who arranged it, so I mean, I suppose that all the features of this kind of rivality are used for the show business. Personally, I don´t think this rivality even exists, but I´m sure that they never will be friends. If I had to choose between them, I prefer Coria´s magic. It´s a pity that in my country some people don´t like him because some of his attitudes.

Bye...

i agree that it's probably just an invention from the press, but the story sais that once after a match where Guillermo disscussed a couple balls and got it his way Gaston hit him in the dressing room and they got into a fight... And i know they are not very friendly with each other, but you don't have to belive everything the press sais...

One incident between these 2 happened in TMS Hamburg semifinal last year. Coria was cramping in the third set and had some treatment but still won the match. Because Coria was chasing down every ball although he could barely walk between rallies, Gaudio accused him of faking the injury. There were rumours that they had a vehement dispute after the match in the locker room, but I don´t know if this is true.

Thanks..

I remember a couple years ago Acasuso's coach and Coria were fighting in some exhibition in Argentina.

I like both players, but I think Coria has learned to control his emotions much better than Gaudio and thus has really started to realize his talents.

hehe, I seemed to have overlooked this thread....a discussion about Guille's many many bitchfights....yummy :D

Anyway Amethyst is right, he complained of cramps at the end of the second and took asked to be treated by the trainer but he miraculously recovered to win the third. The classic moment was when after having won the match he pathetically limped towards the net, like he was in an incredible pain and discomfort even though he was bounding around like a puppy in the third , at the net Gaudio said something to him but I dont think Guille heared what it was and he was like "what?" but Gaudio just pushed him aside..I dont think they battled it out in the dressing room, Gaudio said that they only talked and didnt fight so....

Another disagreement was between Guille's father and the Davis cup captain Gustavo Luza , this was when they were supossed to play Spain in Malaga, he said something like Gui wont make the team because the Argentinian team is only made up of the captain's friends and he called them a "clan" lol, and he asked for Guillermo Vilas to be replace Luza as DC captain since he would only pick the deserving players where as the current situation was that only the captain's friends were chosen to play.

There are actual quotes from him, he made some pretty harsh accusations there, I cant be bothered to dig 'em up now, I will do sometime, coz well....it's interesting.

Wow... that incident in Hamburg sounds just as bad as when Roddick was "cramping" in his hand then would hit the hardest forehands and serves imaginable against Michael Chang at Roland Garros a couple years ago.

Only thing is Michael Chang is too much of a nice guy and gentleman to say anything but every other player knows what happened. Remeber Lapentti almost got in a fight with Roddick about that?

Lol..... Chang did the same "cramping" thing against Lendl at Roland Garros when Chang took the title. He even served underhanded once time catching Lendl flat footed. So....... of course, Chang didn't say anything about Roddick's cramps.

I take exception to Kiara's statement of the facts. Lots of people have played with cramps and made themselves keep going during the points and then limped between them. She insinuates that Coria was malingering and pretending. I don't think that is true.

well I saw the match and I remember thinking he was in pain but I didnt think he was in as much pain as he let on, neither did the eurosport commentators, neither did Boris Becker. He limped on occasion during points but sometimes he didnt and I found that odd...and he was running and sliding like as if nothing was hindering his movement but if he was infact injured then all credit to him for playing like a pro but I didnt buy that it was as serious as he made everyone believe.

I dont think he was feigning cramps, but I dont think im entirely wrong in thinking he made a rather big deal out of something that wasnt . And I did find that he picked himself up off the floor and limped towards the net in the most melodramatic fashion, maybe the word "pathetic" was too strong...I dont mean to scorn him for what he did, I also didnt say I didnt believe he was cramping, all im saying is that IMO he slightly exaggerated is all.

I think it´s very hard to judge wether a player is faking or exaggerating cramps. I agree with star that many players manage to move quite well during points and at least offer heavy resistance while they can barely walk between points. But I also understand that Gaudio was irritated as Corias moves were not restricted at all during points.

Star,

we can debate about Chang's cramps but regardless of whether he did or didn't cramp, Roddick's show of cramps was more than a little obnoxious. Chang against Lendl... that match was so long ago, but I don't seem to remember many people thinking Chang faked it.

Many people would agree that Roddick while he was cramping, did overdo it at Roland Garros.

I don't know if you are a Roddick fan or not, I am not a big Chang fan and at the time I didn't have much of an opinion on Roddick; either way I'm just calling it as I see it.

The whole situation where one player cramps is very tough because it is difficult to know whether he is faking or not. I think it ends up depending on a lot of things. Which muscle it is for example makes a huge difference, what a player's pain tolerance is, etc etc.

In the end though the only way to extrapolate is to look at the person as a whole and their history and judge whether or not that person is likely to do such a thing or not.

my mother has seen one of gaudio's interview. the journalist had noticed that him and guillermo did not seem to him to be good friends. Gaudio answered something like that: "Nobody is obliged to get along well with everyone either". He looks a little bit angry. :)

Although Gaston Gaudio and Guillermo Coria are from Argentina, there is tension between them related to the evils of jealousy and differences of privilege. Gaudio is the self-made miracle, while Coria is his country's chosen pet project.

The ill will between the two bubbled last year at the Hamburg Masters Series event when they were locked at one set all in a match. At that point, Coria banged his fist on his chest and stared down Gaudio as an unspoken challenge to his fellow countryman's heart.

Gaudio was furious with Coria's petty grandstanding. After Coria won the match, Gaudio confronted him in the locker room. The two had to be pried apart.

Neither player stoked the controversy last week, with both claiming the rancor has died out with time. But Gaudio hinted at the lingering spat when asked a benign question about the differences between himself and Coria during yesterday's news conference.

"Your question would deserve a very long answer," said Gaudio, making the inquiry far more complicated than required, "but we want to talk about tennis mainly. I think for the rest, this is not the right place."

I don't think anybody is all nice or all mean. That just doesn't happen. I think Guille is very focused and ambitious. He's got a killer instinct on the court and he is very competitive.

He's very nice to his fans on his website. He's got a strong family tie and he is very romantic with Carla.

jealousy rages.... :awww:

What does that mean?

I'm sorry if I gave the impression that I was equating romantic with jealous. I didn't mean that at all. He says how much she helps him being with him and how she always says the right thing about his tennis and how he was in love with her from the time he first saw her. I don't think that has anything to do with jealousy.

I hope I'm not misreading what you said and that you weren't trying to read something negative into what I said.

I couldn't believe it yesterday. Guillermo deserved it so much, and he was on his way! Gaudio would have never win this final without Guillermo's injury. He did almost loose it even this way. Coria was so much better! And it wasn't a kind thing from Gaudio to laugh about it. He didn't reacted well, neither as a player, neither as a man. But Coria still remains the best clay-court player of the world, and I think he'll win this thing not only once in his life. SUERTE, GUILLERMO! :bigclap:

OH MY GOD!! There is a local television fund raising marathon on right now. I can't see the match.

Hmmm ... we must live close! The men's final was pre-empted here too for the Children's Miracle Network! Small world. :-)

Gaston deserved to win. Coria as usual is up to his tricks and feigning. It's fine to be ambitious and competitive, but this chap is obviously playing some mind games with Gaudio. Even the match commentators said it was poetic justice for Gaudio in the end to win.

Can you believe Gaudio is still talking bullshit about the Hamburg issue. Instead of moving on...whenever asked he says something. Like:"I dont believe Coria was injured in Hamburg." Gaudio is not a gentleman...instead of moving on...he keeps saying something. NEXT!!:)

So sad to hear Gaudio is like this... A newly-crowned RG champion shouldn't talk in that way! :(

I am still hoping they can re-unite and fight for Olympics or Davis Cup together! After all, tennis is one of the few sports that Arg can grab Gold Medal...

Do you really think that Guillermo dropped the 4th set and gave it to Gaudio just because he wanted to be tricky? And he wanted to loose this final, the dream of his life, although he was in a better position? You can't say it seriously! No, I think it was a terribly unfortunate thing for Guillermo. And in my country the commentators said something else: Gaudio's joy shouldn't be so obvious because it's rather evident that he had a great fortune with this final. But it's all over now...

Associated Press

PARIS -- Guillermo Coria plays with a lucky racket. And if that's not enough, he wears old sneakers that have helped him through tough matches.

"The important thing is to feel well in the place where you are," he said Saturday when asked about his superstitions.

On Sunday, Coria will be in the French Open final playing fellow Argentine Gaston Gaudio.

While Gaudio is unseeded, Coria's first berth in a Grand Slam final is hardly a surprise. He is seeded third and has won 37 of his past 38 matches, and he survived two tumultuous weeks on clay as every other favorite stumbled.

After losing last year's semifinal, Coria is determined to do better.

"My goal is to win the French Open," he said. "I don't want to just win the semifinal. I want to win the tournament."

When he and Gaudio take center court, it will be the first time two Argentines play in a Grand Slam final.

Until this week, Gaudio had never advanced beyond the fourth round at a major event. But he and Coria have dreamed of this moment since they were boys, and they're leading a resurgence in Argentine tennis.

The last man from their country to win a Grand Slam title was Guillermo Vilas at the Australian Open in 1979. He sat in the stands and watched the semifinals Friday.

"It's great to have Vilas over there and watching me," Gaudio said. "It's like too much. ... We started playing tennis because of him. So I think all that is happening to us, we owe him."

After a long dry spell for Argentine tennis, the nation now has six men ranked in the top 50.

Coria, named for Vilas, and Gaudio were two of four Argentines that made it to the quarterfinals, a first. Then three reached the semifinals, another first.

Coria has a 23-2 record against Argentines. One loss came against Juan Ignacio Chela in 2002, the other to Gaudio in 2001.

On clay, Coria leads Gaudio 3-1, though they haven't played in more than a year. Both say they're ready for a long match Sunday.

"We want -- both of us -- to win. Just that next match," Gaudio said. "We are extremely ready and very close to having our dream come true."

En route to the final, Gaudio beat former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt and No. 8-seeded David Nalbandian, another Argentine.

Coria defeated 1998 champion Carlos Moya in the quarterfinals, then wore the same sneakers out of superstition in his semifinal victory over Tim Henman.

"The day of the final, the flag of Argentina will come up, and this is the important thing," said Coria, who was boys' champion at Roland Garros in 1999.

"It's a historic situation," Gaudio added. "Whatever happens, it's good for the Argentinian people."

Afterward, they said they might celebrate together.

"It would be a nice thing," Coria said.

"Why not?" Gaudio said.

Wonder if they did celebrate together... :boxing: ;)
