Great day for the Russians under very testing conditions.

Safin was excellent against Massu and now in an even more impressive performance from Igor Andreev taking out the main man Gonzalez in front of his crowd.

Great stuff from Igor and the Chileans will have it all do now.

Ouch.

I guess the pressure on Gonzo has gone through the roof, he's not handling it well...and Massu's not been much help lately...can't do it all himself.

Great win for Andreev - he can be lethal on clay and showing some of his best form.

Once again Tarpischev begins to look like a genius.

A surprising result no doubt. I guess Gonzalez's scheduling wasn't the smartest, playing last week at Vina del Mar, home tournament in Chile and all, but still. Coming back to haunt him I guess.

Well done Andreev for taking the chance though.

Gonzo has handled Andreev in the past very easily and it was basically a match up where both guys refused to ht backhands.

I didn't see the match, but I don't assume Igor was dominating with that 2 hander. There could have been some complacency thinking that the Russian team isn't as strong as usual, well they learnt the hard way.

Yeah, Fernando picked up a lot of "fans" during the AO but many don't have the stomach for the bad times, the losses that will surely come. I'm very dissapointed but still a fan. The things that made me a fan of Fernando are still there even though he lost a match we all thought he would win today.

Chile can still pull this off but Nico and Fena will have to elevate their play from today's. Next time Chile has home court advantage, they may want to reconsider the clay courts in favor of hard.....

Gonzo as top 5 is a joke.

How is it a joke? It is deserved. He had a strong last quarter of 2006 - on indoors and then had a very strong showing at the Aussie Open on Rebound Ace. He deserves to be where he is. And - believe it or not- even though Gonzo is from South America his game is best suited for faster surfaces than clay. I fail to see how that makes him a joke.

I am surprised that Chile got 0 wins today- but Safin and Igor are not exactly chumps on clay. As has been stated before- Igor is the last person to beat Nadal on this surface. And- Russia did win the semis of the DC last year on clay.

I do hope that Chile can pick themselves up from this disappointment and win the doubles.

Who would have thought that Chile would have had better first day results playing at the US on grass than playing at home?

Well done to Andreev- he seems like a nice chap so kudos to him. :)

so Tarpi will use Marat tomorrow to seal to deal????

 Hummm...good question.
Right now, Safin must be feeling extremelly confident and I wouldn't be surprised if he asked Tarpi to play the doubles.
This is how I see:

Gonzo/Massú vs. Kunitsyn/Gabashvilli: I'm assuming that the chilean team is a better team than the russian one. If the chilean team wins, it's gonna be expected and will also give some confidence to Gonzo and Massú, which rigth now I think is non-existing. But the russians will still have a very confident Safin and Andreev.

Gonzo/Massú vs. Safin/Kunitsyn or Gabashvilli or Tursunov (never underestimate Tarpi's ability to surprise): I think it's gonna be a much tighter rubber. In this case, if the chilean team wins, it's gonna give much more confidence to Gonzo and Massú than beating Kunitsyn/Gabashvilli, which might be dangerous for the russians. On the other hand, there are higher chances for russians to close this tie 3-0.

I'm just assuming things...It's very hard to read Tarpi's mind. I have no clue what he's thinking or if he'll think the same way I do.
And we must also consider that Gonzo and Massú are great fighters and that Safin might not be that accurate tomorrow.

A doubles win could boost the confidence of the Chileans. It certainly wouldn't be the first time it happened.

Feña beated Marat 3 times last year, and Massu could definitely win a decisive 5th rubber against Andreev.

But exhaustion could be a bigger enemy for Chile than the Russians.

Russians will surely use their best doubles combo available tomorrow. Gonzalez has the highest risk game of all players involved, so everyone is getting mroe and equally tired tomorrow, Gonzalez's chances in singles will diminish in the greatest extent.. Safin has barely broken a sweat today.. Andreev spent months in fitness training and was not able to play much, he is mentally and physically fresh and he is the best claycourter Russia has.. I don't see Massu erven having a shot at him.. .. Unless Russians have a big drinking party tonight, this tie is now a done deal.
