Top 10 Active Grunts

While trawling through the old threads on the men's forum when it resided in WTAWorld last year, I chanced upon a post of mine in which I attempted to list the Top 10 grunts of active players. I've resurrected it here, in no particular order:

Spadea: sounds like a wounded animal on its last legs, begging for mercy; speeds up into a short bark of panic when he gets in trouble. "Euurgghheeerrrr... euurgghhheeeerrr.... eurgh-hey! Eurgh-HEY!"

Saretta: brays mercilessly, maintaining the same rhythm for every shot of every rally of every match. Really quite impressive, and it ground Johansson into the ground during their Wimbledon match in 2002.

Kuerten: perhaps the grunter par excellence of tennis, he has sweeping moans that accompany his shots and can make him appear pretty lame, particularly when he is forced onto the defensive. All together now, "EuurggghhWAAAYYYYYY!"

Gaudio: horse-like features and a horsey, high-pitched shriek to match; increases in volume as he serves, yelps continue during rallies. Commentator quipped during RG 2002 match versus Ferrero that he sounds like in pain when he serves, which given Gaudio's comment that he was suffering from cramps in the post-match interview may well explain it. Pain also caused by another excruciating choke, one suspects.

Mantilla: how appropriate that he be nicknamed Felix the Cat - in moments of stress he sounds like one being dragged forcibly over the flagstones. Squeals his anxiety he loops up the ball and begins working his opponent over and over in endless topspin rallies. Again increases in volume on his tortuous serve... "Aaaaaaaaargheeeeeee!!!" Ha-eeeehhhh!" etc.)

Gonzalez: the flamboyant grunter. "Ah-haah! Ah-heey! Ah-heee! Ah-hwaay!" he yells as he smacks his forehand in all directions, intimidating his opponents through the exuberance of his shouts. In particular, note the change in volume to accompany the change of pace; gingerly he will caress backhand slices cross-court a couple of times, yelping "Ee-ya.... ee-ya..." before exploding into a titanic forehand down the line with a triumphant "Ee-yaHEEEEE! Vamos!!!")

Roddick: desperate, again like a wounded colt as he lugs his hefty frame around the court, emitting shuddering gasps as he flails at the ball and lumbers desperately for shots he can't reach. "Huuuurrrrrrr...!!! Huuurrrrrr!!!!"

Clement: the huffing and puffing grunter. He will emit desperate pants of exertion as he rushes up to chase down dropshots, hustles his opponents into making errors and makes unbelievable gets. "Hya-eeee! Hya-eehhhh! Aargh aaargh aaarggghh!...." (chasing to dropshot from opponent)

Robredo: all Spaniards grunt, but at a pinch he's the most vocal. As an opponent you know you're in trouble when he starts grunting, as it's a loud, nasal whine of determination. He really does drill into the senses with it. "Heuurrrrr! Heuurrrr!!!!"

Nadal: clearly intends to shriek the opponent into submission. "Aaaarrghhhh! AAARRRGGHHHHH!" It's like someone's had a go at his mother and he wants to take out his anger on court.

An honorary mention goes to Ljubicic - has anyone noticed that when he starts to struggle in a match, he begins this strangulated, guttural shriek of exertion? He yelps in pain as he makes contact with the ball, almost as though he's got a bad case of hiccups.

And one more, about a certain young American whose service bark can only be conveyed in onomatopaeic form: "Eeeya-HAAAAAHHHHH!!!!"

Before you ask, a) I have very acute hearing and b) yes, I have far too much time on my hands.

I haven't seen enough of these guys play (thanks ESPN!) to be able to judge, but... I'll agree on Spadea since I saw (heard?) it in person. oh man, funny stuff. James Blake actually grunts extremely loudly as well. I've never thought Andy grunted particularly loud, but maybe it's just me. Taylor just  and Gonzalez..... hahaha yep.

I remember watching one of the matches last week during IW and someone grunted inordinately loudly and I don't remember who it was :/ Some good I am lol

i haven't heard Andy grunt in a while :scared: i dont even remember wtf it sounds like:retard:. but the ATP doesn't even come close to WTA in terms of grunts. WTA has the best there is-Seles, Dokic, Sharapova, Schiavone, Williams sisters, etc.

It's true, I originally made this list right after RG last year and Roddick was a more noticeable grunter back in the Benhabiles days. There are always loads of players eligible for an amusing grunt, like Zabaleta ("Eaaaarggghh!" in contrast to Coria's "Hweeeeyyyyy!" during their RG epic) or the Ferrero squeal, but I don't know what's funnier; the grunts themselves or the idiotic Wimbledon spectators who make patronising reference to them. "They seem to be grunting an awful lot, have you noticed?" Yes, and I didn't care too much thanks...

Andy's in much better shape now than he was and I think he only grunts when he's tired. He definitely did not grunt in Scottsdale when I saw him, I was for sure close enough to hear lol

and Sjengster lmfao that's funny that the spectators comment on it so much! True, though, Coria has a squealy thing and it's cute :)

Paul-Henri Mathieu needs to be on this list, he has an embaressing erm "grunt" if you could call it that, he makes a very distinctive noise that can only be associated with a person engaging in a certain pleasurable activity ;)
I was at his match against Robredo in Marseille year before last and I didnt know where to look :o alot of people there were rather disturbed by it :D Paul-Henri on the other hand sounded like he was having a GREAT time, even though he lost ;)

he was so loud he put Robredo to shame ;)

i dont like it when only one player grunts, Guga many times when he plays on hardcourts faces opponents who do not grunt, and his grunt gets to be something very irritating.

But when two players grunt, and they have different distinctive grunts, I like, it is ideal for long matches on clay, with 15 20 stroke rallies, I like to hear the contrasting grunts arrgggh!!/ arrrheeee!!! /arrgggh!!/ arrrheeee!!! /arrgggh!!/ arrrheeee!!! /arrgggh!!/ arrrheeee!!! /arrgggh!!/ arrrheeee!!! /arrgggh!!/ arrrheeee!!! /arrgggh!!/ arrrheeee!!! /arrgggh!!/ arrrheeee!!! / *winner* Vamos!!!

I had fun reading it and I agree with lots of Sjengster wrote... a very good feature would be to provide audio files of all those players, that would be funny

When I was in Montreal last year i was watching uh, some match or another on one of hte other courts that has another one right beside it. There is a big tarp between the two though, so you have to walk all around to get to the other one. Anyways, so during the match I'm watching all I could hear was this loud groaning from the next court, and I just had to go see what vivid pornographic behavior was happening over there. Much to me dissapointment, it was just Paul Henri.

wow watching at it in slow motion makes me realise just how large the backswing on Ferrero's forehand is and how perfectly timed his shots are ....I can see why he is as good as he is on clay, give him time on a shot and he's lethal.

Too bad because the all time king of grunts was the Austrian legend Thomas Muster who would put any of these pretenders to shame.

The Mantilla one is a classic grunting when he hits his huge 150km/h serve, Gonzo is another good one, and how about Massu he tries hard, but not quite.

I'd like to nominate Mr Nicolas Massu. The man is on the brink of orgasm every time he hits a ball, I swear! I really noticed it this year vs Reid and Jarkko. It only annoyed me when he was playing Jarkko...I wanted him to beat Reid :( His grunt takes place when the ball has already bounced in his opponents court :O Spaz... *I do like the guy, btw :)*

Even though Andrew Ilie hasn't officially retired, but he hasn't been seen for ages.

The sounds that come out of his mouth when he was trying to hit winners from 8 metres from the baseline was very unique. Even on the serve the sound of
"wwwwwwwwwwwofffffffffffa" came out of his mouth, very unique and I am not sure what you would call it.

Guga's is really funny !!!

Yup, Guga goes like " uer.....huer.... uerrrr....." Hehe players do grunt occasionally...( for some )

sigmagirl91
03-26-2004, 02:18 PM
OK, I am giving this to Guga.
Back in the day, Kent Carlsson would have taken this one hands down-along with the entire WTA, ala Seles....

03-26-2004, 02:46 PM
That's true, I'd forgotten Mathieu, something along the lines of "Ha-EEEEEEEEE!!!! C'mooonnnnn!!!!" Massu is of course nicknamed the Vampire, presumably because of the way he drains entertainment from a match like blood from one of the Count's victims, and his short sharp grunt is something like "Heeuuurrrrggghhh!!! Heeuuuurrgggghhh!!!! Vamos vamos vamos vamos vamos vamos VAMOS!!!" etc...

Tomas Ugo Behrend, that guy has a very eloganted grunt and he was training with Massu at the AO at one of the back courts and I heard them 200m away.

Tangerinus, is right someone should try and get the audio and guess the grunter.

Nadal sounds like a donkey.
Guga's is the funniest; almost sounds like he really is saying "GUUUUUUUGGAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!" with each shot.

LOL, agreed. Very rare. When I watched the 2002 DC (that TC always shows), he grunted every now and then when he served. He sounds strained, kinda like Hewitt serving. And groans when he hit groundstrokes. Just a normal groan/grunt. Nowadays, when (if) he grunts, it's more just exhaling.

You can hear him totally fake it in the Indian Wells Exo versus Roddick.

I don't like anyone's vocalizations except Rafa's, which I love. Like a connoisseur, I like some years better than others. 2005 and half of 2006 had a soft, breathy sound, two syllables, anhANHHH. Sometime last year a new varietal was introduced, more guttural at times, one syllable, Annh!, which is less um, sensual sounding. Over time, there is more of the latter, but you can still hear both. There is also a two-syllable combo, where the first syllable is soft, but the second is the harsher sound.

I also love the noises Agassi makes when he's chasing down a ball: "Huaaahh, ahhhh, hauuhahhhhaaa, aaaaahh!!!!"

Haha agreed. I also love how he makes a noise similar to that when his opponent hits a drop shot. It's like this desparate sound he makes, even if he has plenty of time to get there. It's so funny, sounds like he's so shocked.

i haven't heard Andy grunt in a while :scared: i dont even remember wtf it sounds like:retard:. but the ATP doesn't even come close to WTA in terms of grunts. WTA has the best there is-Seles, Dokic, Sharapova, Schiavone, Williams sisters, etc.
Measured in decibels, Monica's grunts (or) whinings?) is tops. Joke is, her would-be assailant always made it a point to bring along an ear cover. Apparently, the ear cover had not been effective that he decided to put his Plan B into action.

Ancic, at times, sounded dreadful at Wimbledon this year. Even when sliced backhands were played, the level of grunting and the intensity of shot just didn't add up

Ancic - Ferrer, Wimbledon 08, the grunting from Ancic ended when Ferrer's started, so it was just an endless stream of grunting for 3 hours.

Before you ask, a) I have very acute hearing and b) yes, I have far too much time on my hands.

you forgot davydenko.......he stopped grunting a few years ago but initially during his top-5 days, he used to make a funny sound........players usually grunt with the shot, but davydenko used to shout "eeeee" and then hit the shot.......

12-27-2009, 10:29 AM

Go away tards this is a fun thread.

My favorite type of grunt is the Clement/spaniards type when they yelp in surprise and start puffing their way to track a droshot. It just makes you want to pat them on the head and throw them a freesbee.

The Monfils grunt is pretty hilarious too. Usually he doesn't do it but when he feels like he has to attack he lets out this really douchey grunt. You can hear that he's gonna attack because his grunt starts building up way before he even gets to the ball, like he's concentrating his chi or taking a really painful shit "uuuunnnnnggggg..." then makes contact and goes "HAN-eeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!", really loud at first but then he lets it linger for a while as if to say "what are you going to do about that bitch?". What's really funny about it is that when he does that he pretty much doesn't expect the ball to come back, so if he has to hit a few more shots he gets more and more hesitant "HAN-eeeeeehhhhhhh?" "HAN-eeeaaahh??", until he sends the ball in the stands.

Filo V.

I'm not very good at onomatopoeia, but I think Nole's got a pretty distinctive grunt, especially on the serve (which you can hear immediately at the outset of the video below). Kind of a strained, groaning build-up and then release. His grunts while rallying become rather desperate-sounding as he gets winded.
