Thanks to Aphex for finding this piece of news.

The 2007 Swedish Open has cancelled it's commitment to being a round robin event and that is great news.

Summary:

The first sentence says that Wimbledon didn't want the Swedish Open to begin on the same day as the mens final (rightfully so).

- Just explains the RR format and the more matches required need a Sun start with conflicts with Wimbledon.

- Wimbledon didn't want the clash, so Båstad was removed the RR circus.

- Thomas Wallén the TD was initially disappointed that the tournament was going to be part of history, but he is flattered that "a Grand Slam such as Wimbledon sees us as a big competitor in the attention stakes

- Nicola Arzani said they didn't bow to pressure from Wimbledon, even though the ATP knew and must have realised in their planning that in their consultations that Swedish Open beginning on Sunday and took this resolution.

- ATP and the four GS tournament don't want some big tournaments to start on the same day as the final. says Arzani.

- In ranking points and prizemoney it's one of the smallest events on the ATP, yet it has some of the strongest fields among the 22 other clay events. The tournament has gone a long way in establishing itself among the top 5 on clay.

- Wimbledon's reaction compensates our position more than enough that we don't have to test the new format. The event now has other plans for the Sunday that the event was meant to start.

- "Then we should celebrate 60 years of the Swedish Open on tour. Then Wimbledon can think what they want." Wallen laughs.

I didn't know tournaments could back down...

Wimbledon's organizers have a point.

Anyway, good news.

Well Wimbledon has it right here, the final of a Slam should always take precedence over ATP events, even such great ones like Båstad. It's the only sensible decision and of course these idiots forgot to see this beforehand with the schedule.

Båstad is the best place to have an RR event, just more time on the beach and the bars under the excuse of playing tennis.

Excellent! Good decision, and in the end Bastad will benefit from not using that ridicilous system.

I thought they had cancelled the RR format because they realized it's nonsense...

Actually, they cancel it because of the planning... that's a good news, anyway.

It wasn't officially announced, until a few days ago. Wallen speaks on the website about it and check the date and it wasn't January.

great news :yeah: one less RR hell this year

as said already, not for the best reason (they should just say RR is rubbish :p ), but it really doesn't matter in the end

btw, does Queen's RR have a Sunday start (the same day as RG final)? If not, the schedule will be really hectic there... :o

Båstad was taken of the ATP RR list at the start of January, I'm just happy to see an official article about it.

They had some negotiations and I think Wallen is put out that his event wasn't RR, but it worked out well in the end.

I am going to email him and thank him. I bet he will hate that :p

Below is the text of the e-mail I sent. I'm not posting it here for fun; I'm posting it so that people can use it as a template if they like. I'm really lazy about writing e-mails so if anyone else is like me having a template might motivate them to send an e-mail, whereas otherwise they might not.

haha, I did it much shorter

I haven't read much about the RR discussion, but I hate it to be honest. Get rid of it for good! No one wants to see half hearted matches from players who are already through, and don't want to put the effort in. A total waste of time.

Looks like the ATP have been quick off the mark amending their calendar - I downloaded their calendar in PDF format on the 26/01/2007 and Båstad is not listed as an RR event.

Dear Mr. Wallen:

the reason I'm writing to you is to tell you how happy I am to know that Båstad will not use the Round Robin system. I believe it has been a very wise decision and I felt the need to recognize it and to thank you.

Båstad is a tournament I appreciate a lot and I would have been very disappointed if the tournament got damaged by a system that only benefits the best players, and that diminishes the possibility of unexpected results in the first rounds. The upsets are an essential ingredient of the tournaments, and they are remembered by the fans for many years.

Round Robin takes away the excitement from the tournaments and generates unpleasant situations like the one we all saw in Delray Beach some days ago. Definitely throwing away matches is not something the fans are willing to watch.

As an Argentine, I would love to see the organizers of the ATP Buenos Aires following your steps and go back to the traditional system. Simpler and more fan friendly.

again, thank you very much,

Matías xxx

I am just about to email him.

Basically mention the fact that many people are against RR, the ones that they are trying to attract and also remind him when the tournament was considered a bit of a joke and a nice holiday.

He helped turn it around and that it's won the best IS event for 4 years in a row and gets great fields, it wasn't done on cheap gimmicks.
