Michael Russell returns to the top 100

Congrats to Mike for returning back to the top 100 after all the injury problems and doing it without the help of wildcards and getting out there winning Challengers and even winning a Futures last year.

He started 2006 at 253 and he was only that high cause he won the Orlando Challenger as a qualifier. Russell finished 2006 at 143 and after winning 2 Challengers and losing to Hewitt in 5 sets he is now ranked 94th.

In the past 4 years he has had three knee operations, a torn hamstring and ankle problems.

Last American male to make the 4th round of RG in 2001 when he lost to Guga after having a match point. Just hope he can be healthy for the year.

that match is already a RG legend despite being a 4th round match and despite 1 of the players was 'unknown'

Always great when players make a comeback without patronage.

Keep it up Mike! :yeah:

Too bad he couldn't hold that break in the 3rd set against Hewitt, but he didn't get any handouts or ask for any which is good as well.

Hope he can win some matches on the main tour, though flying from Hawaii to Delray to play, could be a challenge.

Solid stuff from Russ this year. He got his ranking back up the hard way and is now playing the best tennis of his career, I'm looking for Mike to crack the top 50 this year, the guy can play on everything. :yeah:
YTD Record : 13-1
Sets W/L: 28-3 (Only sets lost were to Hewitt in a five set defeat)

I like your confidence, just hope he doesn't get injured and he was out for a few months last year as well. Mike likes the clay, but he is no fan of the grass.

Excellent job, Mike aka Mighty-Mouse. I met him last year at a Challenger. Great guy. Super happy for him that he didn't give up and it has paid off for him. Would love to see him get a great result at The French Open.

with the way his game looks now I'd give him more chances in HC than clay

He still has the game to play well on clay moreso than his compatriots, while he still likes the clay, he will play more events on hardcourt.

i was recently looking in his activity,,besides his 5 set loss to lleyton hewitt as a qualifier at the AUS Open he is 13-1 including his 3 qualifying wins. and he dropped only 10 games en route to his challenger win in Noumea:eek:

is this guy the real deal?

he is like 26 so... he almost beat Guga in RG, in 00 I think or was it 01? I have seen him play and he has more ability to be ranked out of the top 100 for most of his career...

It was '01, and that was indeed a memorable match!

Can someone explain why he had a box of Kleenex next to him when he was playing leyton hewitt?

It was good that he went over to Ostrava as a hitting partner. Funny that the best American singles player on clay was the hitting partner.

He should stay within the top 100 as long as he doesn't have anymore injuries, as that has been his big problem.

Maybe he needed to blow his nose...I always have hankeys next to my court.

Maybe he was thinking of the ballkids- no blowing the nose into the towel deal;)
