Betfair Appreciation Thread

This is my first topic so if you don't like it - say so but nicely.

I would like to say a big thanks to Betfair. Not only do they cover many matches but the quality is brilliant. :worship:

And if anyone at Betfair is reading this - I am a rare gambler but I placed a bet during the AO with you and any future bets will be with you. You have my loyalty.

I know many MTF members can't get it - but for those that can lets shout our appreciation. :bigclap:

Great quality, just watched the Guga match, good old betfair.

It's makes a change from being annoyed about Sky, BBC and Eurosports coverage.

Good video coverage.

I doubt it's anything to do with betfair, but whoever was commenting on the guga match - he was shockingly bad.

He didn't seem to know a forehand from a backhand, a smash from a forehand volley and thought a backhand was a good shot when it sailed 9 feet long.

He had no feel for providing ambience at all, trying to persuade me that the ballgirls were tense about the outcome of the match and believed guga was a death's door in his medical timeout, then smoothly changed tack when guga got up and continued.

He pronounced Kuerten in several interesing ways: Curtain, Gurtin, Gurdin and Gurgin, and best of all, he kept announcing Oscar Hernandez like it was a pro-wrestling match.

"So it's 40-15 now - can Gurtin come back at his opponent...OSCAR...HERNANDEZ!!!"

I wanted to cry. I nearly did, in fact.

yeah, the bf commentator is awful.
I'm not about to start thanking them though. The 5% of my winnings (or losings) that they take is thanks enough.

A little bit off topic but during the Murray Nadal match I suddenly shouted at the TV 'For gods sake stop picking your pants out of your ass' no prizes for guessing which player that was aimed at.

The first betfair stream I remember was for Munich last year. I hope it'll stay a free service. The commentary isn't the best and sometimes down right awful, but the video quality equals that of the ATP Masters Series Pay stream.

Does anyone know why we aren't allowed Betfair in the States?:( Is it the dollar versus euro? I can use my credit card abroad , why not for gambling on their site. Good for you all who can get it. I've had the bewin site and the livestreaming has been very good but they cover very little tennis. Who's in the know about this....anyone?

Could it be due to the legal wranglings going on in the US about online gambling? I don't know it is detail but haven't online gambling sites in the US been told to shut down for the moment?

I have Betfair envy too.

States promote gambling with the lottery, casinos everywhere, but don't bet online. It's because the big money men and Washington won't get their cut.

Though I have been rather shocked at their eagerness to get me to place a bet! About a week after registering I recieved a letter thanking me for joining etc etc, and last Saturday they called me on my mobile phone to ask how I had found the website and to inform me on good first time bets over the weekend. I hate betting :p

Whenever a site asks me for my number I always give a fake one and never ever give out my mobile number. I've received one email from them offering me a free £10 bet for Cheltenham Cup - I forgot about it though until it was too late.

If it was a smaller unknown company I would definetly do that but maybe the fact that Betfair is a reputable company lured me into a sense of security

Yes I got offered the free £10 bet. Getting people to place their first bet must be their hardest challenge, so offering one free bet will make sense as one bet often leads to many more.

Great job by Betfair. :)

By the way, in the FAQ they say :

What countries can I watch from?
Soccer - UK and Ireland only.
Tennis - Internationally (excl. event hosting nation).
Greyhounds - Internationally

Thought in the beginning they were saying "UK and Ireland only" to tennis, too. Never mind - but maybe those who had no luck earlier better give it another try.

3 finals to be streamed tomorrow! :worship:

each of these events has a direct link that you can play in windows media player. i have the three links they used for AO. they tend to use the same links over and over again. for example, the link for zagreb is the link they used for aukland and rod laver. the link for MCA is the link they are using for vina del mar. however, they are not using the same link for Vodaphone and Delray, so there must be a fourth link

Yes, anything below 1000 kb/s is almost unwatchable, you can barely follow the ball and it looks like shit. Even with betfair, its still not the greatest, but it was ok if you really needed to watch someone.

great way for betfair to shaft their users IMHO.

the other stream is on 400 kb/s very good but betfair is 1000 kb/s.............

Yes, I love this nice Betfair stream with 1 MB+ very much and deposited € 15 half an hour ago. Now I'm watching the video without betting. :D

it would be nice if bet fair sent out emails warning us of the sudden change in t&c's but it looks like they rather treat their customers like sh*t instead of offering a good reliable service.

Betfair=scammers

How are they scammers? Their T&C was always subject to change and always liable to once they cottoned on to how many people were accessing their feeds. Depositing some money doesn't mean you have to place wagers.

The thing is, you aren't a customer :D we are just people using them for their free service. So although I am pissed, I can't complain too much.

Unless they changed the bitrate this week, the stream isn't 1000 kB/s, it's 641 kB/s.
And if they start to force you to bet in the future, then it's their right to do it. It's not like anyone expected (or should have) them to continue providing the stream for free.

sorry PAL but they said on the FAQS page that they will notify in due course if they will charge users to view the videos does "due course" mean instantly without any notification? so please read the FACTS first!

I NEVER SAID THAT IT SHOULD BE FREE FOREVER (that would be great...) but the FAQs page stated that they would notify in due course.

Depositing some money doesn't mean you have to place wagers Yeah like they said that you do not need to deposit funds to watch betfair live....

They make $40,000,000($40M) turnover a week so they could at least not treat their customers like sh*t.

befair just wants to turn the casual tennis loves (us) into gambeling monters with $20,000+ of debt, great work betfair!!

You're a little too upset about this, far more than I can be bothered to argue with. You're upset they didn't send you a notification, but you've found out anyway the next time you tried to log in, right?

So does it really matter? And as someone told you earlier, it seems you are not a customer of theirs anyway, so they've given you a taste it's up to you if you want to go further and deposit some money (which you don't have to gamble) to watch the feeds.

I NEVER SAID THAT IT SHOULD BE FREE FOREVER (that would be great...) but the FAQs page stated that they would notify in due course.

Absolutely, that's their business, what did you expect? Gambling site in wanting money shock!!!

Here are your options, 1. get Sky and watch loads of tennis. 2. Deposit some money which you don't have to bet and watch the feeds on the net. 3. Continue moaning about not getting free live sport.

Let me guess? 3.

changing the rules overnight without any warning? that's my problem. i wouldn't mind if they gave me more than 1 microsecond to adapt to the rules to deposit funds but it isn't in the terms and conditions to change the viewing criteria without prior warning you fool.

Fucking hell, is it that time of the month or something? You've had to "adapt" to the change? And you wanted prior notice of this so it could sink in, right? Call the samaritans.

You need to chill out a little and ask your mum if you can borrow her credit card and deposit £10 so you can watch some tennis. Either that or stop your whining, how many times do you have to be told that you don't have to place any wagers? We understand that you need time to adapt to this, but once you do, for your sake I hope you are able to make that deposit and watch some tennis. I think the key issue here, is the moron is probably only about 14 and doesn't have a credit card of his own. He was using a free service (which in all honesty was not designed for freeloaders like him, it was for people using their betting services, and wanted to follow a match) not to mention the fact, they only wanted UK users in the first place.

I would understand if the guy had been a paying member of the site, but hes just a moaning leecher.

Nobody thinks it's charity. But also, I don't see what should anyone be grateful for. It wasn't charity, like you said yourself. They didn't provide the stream for the goodness of their hearts, but to make money. So why should I, or anyone else, be grateful to them? It makes absolutely no sense.

They didn't have to let you watch for free - they weren't getting anything for it- but they did. So yes you're ungrateful. They have most likely put this restriction on because to many people are taking up the bandwith which is annoying paying customers and they have to luok after those first. It's not like they have said you need to spend a minimum amount every month.

My local supermarket has extended its evening opening hours - I know they did it for their own personal gain but it is useful as I work long hours so I am greatful. I'm not going to write them a thank you card but I appreciate it.

You must have been appreciative about it or you wouldn't be whinging now.

I'm not whining and I'm not ungrateful. Being grateful to someone who doesn't do you favour because of you, but because of their own interest is nonsensical. I'm grateful for things like unconditional love, not for bank transactions. I'm grateful when someone does a personal favour to me, because they want me to have it; not when they secretly want something in return; because in such situations, it's a simple case of trading, where neither side has any reason to be 'grateful' to the other side. A business deal, plain and simple.

If you buy into the notion that you should be grateful to banks for lending you money, then you are, my friend, just naive. If you are grateful to gambling houses because they give you entry discounts, same story. Its like being grateful to drug dealers for giving you a sample of drugs for free. Rethink your sense of morality, I'd suggest. They've been selling you some crap it seems.

I'm grateful when things happen the way I want them ie I get to watch tennis for free and annoyed when they don't ie london underground takes up an hour of my life stuck of a crowded train. I don't owe Betfair anything but I do appreciate what I have had in the past from them. It didn't turn me into a gambler (but if I was one I would have been greatful at the free £10 bets they kept offering me) and i'm not going to send them flowers - it was just great while it lasted.

I'd rather be happy about what I have had than don't give a damn. I have enough half full glasses to deal with just trying to get to and from work if I didn't have any half full ones I'd need therapy.

I'm grateful when things happen the way I want

Do we understand each other? When you say that you are grateful, does it mean that you are grateful TO SOMEONE, or that you just feel, well, sorta grateful in general, to noone in particular, but just fortunate circumstances?

I don't owe Betfair anything but I do appreciate what I have had in the past from them. It didn't turn me into a gambler (but if I was one I would have been greatful at the free £10 bets they kept offering me) and i'm not going to send them flowers - it was just great while it lasted.

I don't disagree with that. In fact, I feel the same way - it was good while it lasted, now that it's gone, I'm looking for other ways. But I still don't see the connection between 'it was good' and 'I'm grateful'. I'm not grateful for just everything that goes my way, if it was a matter of pure coincidence.

Ever heard of the butterfly effect? So imagine some peasant in Florida coughs, and it brings nice weather to your country a month later. Would you be 'grateful' to that peasant for the weather? I wouldn't call it that way; I'd be glad that the weather is nice, but wouldn't exactly be grateful to that peasant, because it wasn't his intention to bring me good weather.

The same way is with betfair. They provided the stream for various business interests, not to make people happy for the sake of being happy. Maybe some people even started gambling because of it; maybe some of them will lose some money in the future, and they will benefit from that. But like someone said, perhaps the livestream was in fact intented for those who already are gambling. But why? Of course, to encourage them to gamble even more; to provide them the best environment possible for inducing their desire to gamble. In other words, with that stream they sought to take advantage of people's passions for their own interests. And I just took advantage of their desire to make money, fully conscious that the stream wasn't 'intended' for people like me.

Suppose I'm a bank robber, and I robbed several banks, when finally they decided to enhance their security, thus preventing me of robbing them again. Now if I said, damn, why did they have to install that security, would you say that I was being 'ungrateful' for having the opportunity to rob them blind in the first place, while they didn't have the security? That it was good while it lasted, got me some fine money and I should be grateful for that? You see how nonsensical that would be? ;)

Eurosport and Eurosport 2 are showing it along with WTA Doha. There is a live stream on TVAnts (Soccer Addict channel) for Eurosport. Check also MaxTV for a Eurosport France stream which runs very well and has good quality. But Eurosport will probably only show one QF and one SF live.

Just to make things clear: there's no Eurosport 2 stream, but Eurosport will maybe stream the tourney like they did with other ATP tourneys in the past. Those who don't have ES 2, can only hope.

Regarding the final:

If they at least showed the complete final tape delayed, then I could live with it. But showing all matches live, and then possibly only sparing 60 mins for the final is ridiculous. It's not like they have any other live event planned at the time they want to show the match tape delayed. Like I said: send emails to Eurosport and complain about it. And since this is a big event, I'd really like to see the trophy ceremony this time. We already missed parts of last years Federer-Nadal final. I don't want the same to happen again.
