Anyone can see the draw? I keep getting 'tournamend info not available' when I try to look at the draw from ATP site every time. Also, there's no main draw on the Nasdaq-100 site either. Only the qualies.

I saw the last set. It was the first match ESPN showed today. I actually had an anxiety attack when I saw the score....ok mainly severe shaking and rapid pluse but yeah, it was still really bad. OK! It was 5-5 when Benneteau started having cramps BUT he was NOT laying down and dying. This guy had so much fire. The last game actually went to duece before Guille won the match. It was AWESOME!!! And I finally stopped shaking! Go Guille!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're so awesome.

um, nope you got it all wrong. a Finals performance at a TMS event is 70 points, not 68. and if he wins this TMS event, he won't get to #2 in the race. if you notice on the official atp site, at the bottom of the race, it says "updated untill SF" which means they already took into consideration the 70 pts Coria won from his performance so far at Miami :wavey: hope i cleared things up better. and nice fight by Guillermo today

It is also fun to see a smaller fella do well.

I just don't think that North Americans will ever feel that they will do well enough on clay to make it worthwile to them to travel to South America to play on clay in between the Australian hardcourt season and the American hardcourt season. I don't think there is a single American who plays on clay after Wimbledon either.

Hi Coria fans :wavey:

I was searching for nasdaq news items when I came across this article about Guille. Apologies if someone's posted it already. If not, enjoy. :)

Crowd helped ease Coria's pain - but not enough

By Karen Crouse, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Monday, April 5, 2004

KEY BISCAYNE -- No mas.

No more goading Guillermo Coria about the seven-month drug suspension he unjustly served.

Deposit Coria in your memory bank because of everything he did right Sunday in the final of the Nasdaq-100 Open, not because of something he purportedly did wrong three years ago.

Coria, the No. 3 seed, had Andy Roddick, No. 2 in the seedings and No. 1 in America's hearts, feeling sick to his stomach. Playing the kind of tennis that makes purists swoon, Coria captured the first set of their best-three-of-five championship 7-6 (7-2 in the tiebreaker).

The 22-year-old Argentine had turned the Tennis Center at Crandon Park into Little Buenos Aires. There was a distinctly Latin beat to the bedlam created by the 13,118 fans surrounding the Stadium court.

Coria likened it to a soccer crowd. They were crying for Guillermo and Coria was trying so hard to give them something to shout to Mount Aconcagua about.

He committed seven unforced errors to Roddick's 19 in the first set and put 76 percent of his first serves in play. He was playing beautifully.

Yet it was Coria, not Roddick, who threw his racket on his bag at the end of the tiebreaker.

Coria's disgust could be traced to the injury timeout he had required in the 37th minute, down 5-6 and serving, after his lower back muscles clenched.

For nearly five minutes, Coria lay face-down as ATP trainer Bill Norris kneaded the player's back. It didn't look good. The crowd grew fidgety.

But Coria very carefully rose to his feet, slipped his shirt back on and, moving gingerly, yielded only one point on his service game.

After that, Coria's serves flew under the radar gun --- one of his first serves in the tiebreaker was clocked at 79 mph -- but his heart was too big to ignore. The people waving American flags found themselves applauding Coria's grit.

Even as Roddick's last forehand in the tiebreaker sailed wide, Coria knew what Roddick and the rabid crowd didn't want to say could be so. Coria had won the set but he was doomed to defeat.

No mas. He should have said it then but Coria couldn't bring himself to do it.

"I believe I should have retired after the first set," Coria said through an interpreter. "I knew that I probably couldn't (get) through. With the way I was serving, what I could do with the serve against Roddick, I would not win. But nobody wants to retire in a final with all the people that paid money to come see me play."

It was the crowd -- and his competitive instinct -- that kept Coria going.

"The crowd was incredible," said Coria, who later added he had never felt such love outside of Argentina. "It helped me get through some of the pain."

It was awkward for Roddick, who went about trying to put Coria out of his misery while feeling like a bit of a heel for kick-serving an opponent when he was down.

Roddick would lose only four points on his serve in the second and third sets. Coria soldiered on but his discomfort was too great to ignore.

He served the first game of the fourth set. After quickly falling behind 0-40, Coria glumly approached the chair umpire and said it.

No mas.

Coria played 1 hour, 24 minutes of the two-hour match in pain, only to hand Roddick his 200th career victory 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-1, retired.

As tournament officials prepared the court for the post-match ceremony. Coria sat on the edge of his chair, his head cradled in his hands. He appeared on the verge of tears before, during and after the award presentation.

"I was very upset, very sad," he said.

Roddick, 21, looked nearly as disappointed as Coria. This wasn't how the Boca Raton resident wanted to win his third Tennis Masters Series title and 13th ATP title.

He praised Coria for his effort. The public should follow Roddick's lead. Coria deserves our everlasting respect, not our reproach.

Every time an athlete tests positive for a banned substance, Coria's name is dredged up. It has grown so tiresome, Coria has adopted a reflexive response. It came out like a sneeze the other day when the subject invariably came up: "I don't think it does any good to talk about this case anymore."

In April 2001, Coria, then ranked 30th in the world, tested positive for the steroid nandrolone after consuming a dietary supplement that contained the banned substance.

Although he would prove to the satisfaction of ATP chief executive Mark Miles that the supplement he consumed was contaminated during the manufacturing process, it didn't make a difference then, the way it does now.

"He still must play a significant price through suspension," Miles said in December 2001 at the time the seven-month suspension was handed down.

In one of his first tournaments back, on clay in Houston, Coria lost to Andy Roddick in three sets. So if he wanted this victory more than most, you can understand why.

Coria wanted to put the past firmly behind him.

No worries there. Sunday cemented his reputation as a warrior.

May I ask from what were you converted?
At first I wan't that fond of him because of the drug suspension, etc. But then as I became a fan of Nalbandian I looked more into the stories of his countrymen and found that perhaps Coria did not mean to take the substance. And after all- he was only 18 at the time and I don't want to continually judge someone from something they did a few years ago - in particular if is was something done at 18 (represses memories of my own idocy and craziness as a freshman in college) - and more in particular if it was not something that he did intentionally.

And the more I've seen him play- the more I've liked him- and today- bingo- the switch flipped and I can now add him to my list of players that I like and will follow. :)

I also enjoy a motley assortment of players who bring different styles to the game - and I think Coria does that.

ETA - thanks Tangerine for posting that- great article!

04-05-2004, 03:51 AM
Yes, I think so too. Coria is daring. He doesn't just stay on the baseline and run things down. He has touch and guile in his game. He had some lobs today that were to die for.

And I know what you mean about the drug allegations. Personally, I think he paid a high price for whatever happened. To be off for 7 months just as his career was about to take off was a tremendously high price. Some might not have recovered from it. I think that Guille is tested quite often now. He also doesn't have a pattern of play that makes me suspicious. And I am very suspicious about drug use.

Please go and read the wonderful article Bunk posted in general messages everyone. It will bring a tear to your eye. :)

Those pictures are very sad. I think I want that one closeup as an avatar if I could figure out how to do it. :)

u know, the first pic. when looked at this,my heart was broken,,, so upset,,,andy looked so happy, but coria is really so upset! the pic remind me the another final in the USopen last year. Andy and fererro, when the game is over, roddick hold up the trophy, fererro looked very very disappionted just like coria. The pic is also impress me so much.
