I am a little worried already... Tim is like the only person that has beaten him over the past 5-6 months, hopefully Roger can stop that pattern today.

There was always going to be a good and bad side to this final for me. I'm happy for Federer, but it stinks that Henman is left holding the runner-up trophy for the second time in three years and that the match itself was little longer than the one-sided final against Hewitt back in 2002. From the serving stats it would seem Henman had a severe off-day, but I'd love to know what Federer did differently this time to win so comfortably.

Sjenster Roger made 5 errors and had I think 14 winners. He was patient and controlled. Didn't come to the net once to volley. Roger pinned Tim to the baseline and returned very well along with serving great on both 1st snd 2nd serve. Roger's 2nd kick serve was giving Tim problems all day long. Roger made some key passes too. He flicked this one on his backhand side facing away from the net. It must have been about a 25 degree angle. Tim didn't play all that bad but rarely won a point during a rally. Roger had to hit some great shots to beat Tim. Roger made it look very easy but it wasn't.

Well done Roger. He peaked for this match and definetly raised his game from yesterday - the others need to pick up their game to slow down the Fed Express.

Fedex

Sjengster, Federer was on today. He stayed at the baseline and passed really well. They said Henman won less than 50% points won at net. 1 point Henman tried a drop volley and Federer showing his touch, dropped it back over crosscourt on the backhand side, past Tim. Roger served very well, and kept Henman honest with the kicker out wide on the 2nd serve, keeping him, for the most part, from attacking his 2nd serve. Frankly not the best performance by Tim, but a great 1 by Roger. Federer also won all of the extended rallies Hope that Helps :)

It does indeed... well, sounds like a very good improvement from Federer and I'm glad he has another TMS under his belt. Just don't go repeating this victory at Wimbledon, OK Fed?

He should lose some time during Miami though, I can't see him carrying this on forever. And the clay season is still to come... but I think no. 1 is now secure until after Wimbledon.

Sjengster I would love to see roger win Miami but I would rather him win Rome. I hope he just defends his qrt points. If Roger wins a clay master or Miami then does great at RG (qrt, semi, or WIN) Roger will likely be number one for the year. 3 titles and its only March.

but I think no. 1 is now secure until after Wimbledon.
Sjengster, Federer might also catch a bad day at Wimbledon some times... but given recent form (his normal form), I think the only player that could be dangerous for Roger at Wimbledon could be, again, Tim Henman. Agassi is not as dangerous on grass as on hardcourt and Federer will handle Roddick or anybody else also.

What do you think? what do others think?

J. Corwin
03-22-2004, 12:00 AM
armaniman just looks plain stupid right now
If he/she really knew much about tennis, he/she would have know it's best of 3 sets and not 5. Foot in mouth disease at its best..and deservedly so for being such a prick.

Anyway, good win for Roger. He was bound to beat Tim and I thought it would be today. Great run by Tim.

Sjengster
03-22-2004, 12:01 AM
Well, you've got to factor in the mental aspect too - there's no guarantee that Federer will easily handle most of his challengers such as Roddick, he might be nervous and suffer a let-down, the opponent could raise their level and find some new way of exploiting him (I'm sure there are still weaknesses that can be attacked). At the end of the day even the most dominant players prevent themselves from winning everything in sight, through physical or mental fatigue.

LCeh
03-22-2004, 12:02 AM
I think it's not possible to predict anything about Wimbledon, one because it's so far, and two, because of the way Roger is playing.

It really depends on Roger. Like the last few months, it doesn't matter who he is facing, as long as he can play well, he will win. What he is now able to do is to win even when he is not playing well.

The problem with predicting such things is that you never know how well Roger will be playing. Yesterday he was playing okay, today he played terrific, so you can't really tell, but Roger definitely has the most control right now. He is not the getting beaten by other players, but by his own performance, which is something not a lot of other players can claim.

J. Corwin

I think Fed has a good chance at winning 3 of 4 majors this year (obviously excluding FO) as long as he peaks for those slams and doesn't have consecutive top players peaking in his draw (not much chance for those players to all peak at the same time).

Neely
03-22-2004, 12:05 AM
yes, you're right... tennis is a mental sport, but there are only a few persons who don't have problems with Roddick's serve (on grass even more dangerous) and Federer is certainly among them.

Yes, different situation now... Roger has to defend the title now, he's the hunted player then.

Of course, we have to wait until we know but anyway, these have been my two cents.

Yeah I agree with this. Federer really is looking a couple of levels above everyone else. Like you I would guess Agassi is the one guy who can beat him at Miami and Henman would be the most likely guy to beat him in Wimbledon but he might win both these tournaments without being threatened too.

I like Federer. I really do. He is a gifted strokemaker and very watchable. Whereas I sometimes found Sampras quite boring to watch I can't say the same about Federer. But I don't like seeing titles all going to the same guy. I prefer to see the goodies spread about more evenly among the many talented players out there.

Of the guys who have won Wimbledon already I think Federer would definately be the guy I would prefer to win it again. But I suppose I would kinda like to see someone new (Nalbandian, Henman etc) win it, although this seems unlikely. That's just my nature. I tend to root for underdogs. But having said all that if Federer can win Roland Garros too then I'd like to see him win Wimbledon and US Open as well. No one else would be a more deserving Grand Slam champion.
