Sweden df Australia, February 2004 - Adelaide - Davis Cup
So happy I cried a tiny bit (its a big thing!) and then walked through the streets of Adelaide with the Swedish flag around my neck . When I got closer to the main streets I toned it down a bit; though the people of Adelaide are pretty cool :yeah:

Andreas Vinciguerra df Stefan Koubek 2003 Aus Open **brilliant!**
Jarkko df Kafelnikov 2003 Aus Open
Jurgen df Agassi 2004
Alexander Popp df Oli Rochus 2003 Wimbledon

It was Monte Carlo actually, and somehow my brother and a family friend had managed to get tickets to this final.

Becker was up 2 sets to love and had match points in the 4th set tiebreaker and went for a 200km/h second serve and it was a fault, then Thomas ran over him in the 5th set.

Rochus against Moya at the U.S. Open made me really happy. It wasn't because it was Moya that Oli defeated but simply that he beat a top player and he did it courageously and joyously. I couldn't help but smile. And I still smile when I think of it. :)

Hopefully I get to talk to him later this year at some point, but it makes sense to play it there, as long as the court is very slow, and they have a real captain now, which is good.

Volandri def. Gonzalez at Umag 2003 the most dramatic match I've ever witnessed

what happened in this match?

LOL, it should be noted that I haven't witnessed all that many matches in person. ;) But this one was special. It was a very tight rollercoaster 3-setter with the third set decided in a tie-break. The crowd was going insane and the atmosphere was just unbelievable. Everybody was losing it and I mean everybody. I've never seen so many nervous people in the same place. ;) I was literally holding my breath during some of the points. The Gonzalez fans were screaming like mad and on the other side were Italian fans and tourists, well you can imagine. I was in the Volandri camp. ;)

It was a fantastic match, but neither of them could quite finish it off. First Gonzalez lead by a break and had match points, then Volandri was up a break and serving for the match, but tightened up and then all the tension exploded in the tie-break.

In the meantime, Gonzalez became sick (he had a weak stomach from something he ate) and literally vomited on the court. Then continued playing and simply refused to give up even though he could barely stand up. That's when he produced his fiercest shots and was like a wounded animal, lashing out. Then he fell and for a while he didn't get up. I thought that was it, but I was wrong. He took a medical time-out and kept fighting to the last breath.

Volandri finally held his nerve and capitalized on his match point and I was incredibly relieved. But nobody could forget the match. People were talking about it for days and even a year later they were still remembering it with fondness. Both players were terrific. I will never forget the image of Volandri jumping up and producing a winner off Gonzalez' overhead smash. Twice. :worship: No shot is safe with him.

LOL, I'm rambling. Fond memories... :)

Felix Mantilla def Mark Nielsen in 1999 Davis Cup promotion match. If it wasn't for him winning that first match and giving confidence to the others they wouldn't have been promoted.

After helping them regain World Group status he was dumped in 2000, then again the team rallied and thanked him for his 1999 efforts.

I remember this and the circumstances, but it's sad that he hasn't played another Davis Cup match after this, then again he wasn't in the best team at that time.

Ok - I know it's only an exhibition and doesn't really count, but David beating Mariano Zabalete on Friday in the Copa Argentina made me really happy :) The score was 7-6(7-5), 1-6, 7-6(7-4), so the fact that David won a final set tie break (never easy for him :p ), made me confident for next season,- but mainly because this was the first match David played after the tragic death of his Father recently, and I'm so proud of him that he played and won - not just for him but for his family too.

I agree 110%. Nadal def. Roddick is one of my fave matches ever. I think it's my all time favorite. I too questioned it and didn't have much faith in Nadal, and that win was just fantastic. I loved Moya def. Roddick for the Davis Cup as well :)

I'm also gonna say Federer with both Wimbledon wins. I also liked Federer winning Toronto this year. That was a great match. And Federer over Agassi at the USO this year...

And, Kiefer vs Safin in Toronto this year... That was a good one :)

And, Moya vs. Federer in Houston (Tennis Master's Championship) this year, cuz that match was played great and Moya actually got a set off of Roger... Something no one else there could do ;)

Those are my fave ones from this year :) If I kept going it would be 8 pages long, so I'm just sticking with 2004... But like I said, Nadal / Roddick was my all time fave of the year if I had to pick just one :)

This one needs to be updated.

- Safin def Federer at Aus Open 2005 to shut up all the toadies who thought Federer was unbeatable.
- Safin def Hewitt at AO 2005, it's about time he won a 2nd Slam
- Nalbandian def Coria at AO 2005
- Hewitt def Roddick at AO 2005, mainly because of Roddick's poor attempt at gamesmanship and good to see an Aussie make the final, though the final result was better.

I have to think about it longer, but the first coming to my mind is:

Ferrero def. Verkerk at RG 2003.

He had such an outstanding record at RG and lost the final the year before because he was not fully fit. Ferrero is an example of how much you can achieve by determination and hard work. For once, I had a deep satisfying feeling of justice in sports.

Wimbledonfan get your head out of pete ass and look up the facts. Pete blamed his loss against Rafter on an ankle injury I believe. Now he might have been hurt so it was warranted, but it did happen. Pete was not a class act towards Rafter (who really was a class act). Pete also said sour grape things about Muster and was pretty arrogant most of the time which he earned the right to be, just don't give me this class act crap. You can't be a class act and an arrogant ass who tries so so hard to be humble. I think after RG being humble was Pete's greatest challenge.

Federer's straight set sweep of IW 05.

There have been many but a few are:

The first tennis win I can remember really clapping and yellling about was when Yannick Noah won the French Open ( as it was called here then) in 1983- when I was four years old. My parents were into the match, I liked the color of the clay, loved Noah's hair, and could tell that the crowd was really into it. It just seemed really happy at the time. I think that match cemented me as a tennis fan from being a 'lil bit on to adulthood.

As a kid- all of Edberg's wins made me happy because I was in luuurrve with him.

Another favorite childhood win memory of mine was Becker's first Wimbledon (was that 1987). Again- was struck by the hair. He just seemed so young and goofy and I loved him.

Goran's win at the Wimbledon final made me so happy for him (though sad for Rafter). In fact - I was so happy that cut a picture out a picture of Goran, wrote, Congrats Goran! on it, and had it tacked up in my (very first) work cubicle for many months. (He had a place of honor next to my pics of Lenny Krayzelburg celebrating his 2000 Olympic wins and my pic of Shane Battier from the Duke b-ball championship. I am a sports nerd, I will admit.)

I have really loved Feds two wins at Wimbledon. The first one because it showed that he could win the big ones. The second one because it showed that he could face a tough opponent playing great tennis, modify his game, and win the big one.

Muster b Agassi 94 FO :
Muster should have won this in straight sets, but he loved playing Agassi on clay as he could have his way with him. Agassi played well here, but ot wasn't enough.
Muster b Chang 95 FO :
Finally he won the RG that he should have won earlier and completed the comeback.
Muster b Sampras 95 Essen :
Destroyed Sampras indoors on carpet and made Pete look like a muppet, not bad for a guy who can't play on other surfaces but clay.
Rosset b Courier 92 Olympics :
Took Courier apart and diced the # 1 player in the world for the loss of 7 games in 3 sets of tennis. Courier was made to look like a chump.
Rosset b Courier 92 DC final
Rosset b Arrese 92 Olympics
Everyone was against him, played the local guy and the crowd were at the loudest. Over 5hrs, 35 degrees and 90% humidity and the big man was too good with a huge forehand winner.
Mantilla b Federer 03 Rome
The forgotten Spaniard finally won a big clay title. The commentators had written him off before the final. Felix just ran, ran and ground Federer into the dust and the joy made it worthwhile.
Gaudio b Hewitt 02 Barcelona
Gaston diced the # 1 in the world and showed some of his huge talent on clay.
Federer b Roddick 03 Wimbledon
They said he couldn't do it and he just turned it on the style that day.
Federer b Roddick 03 Houston
He played well and seeing Big Jim sad made it better.
Nalbandian b Roddick 03 Basel
After a wrist injury and the US Open heartbreak, he beat him well in one of his best performances.

I think this post is the one George told me about, anyway his final in Rome will be always a classic. (that comeback against Ginepri is also too good, but Ginepri... )

Félix :yeah:

Mantilla b Federer 03 Rome
The forgotten Spaniard finally won a big clay title. The commentators had written him off before the final. Felix just ran, ran and ground Federer into the dust and the joy made it worthwhile.

There is never enough Mantilla love and the Ginepri one was :haha: :haha: :haha:

To be honest Ginepri should never been that close to winning.

That depends on how fit Felix is. He troubled him on hardcourts in their other match as well.

He could irritate him, if the conditions were heavy and Felix could get very good length on his backhand.

Most recent one was probably Davydenko def. Djokovic in Shanghai. A rubbish tournament overall but that one match was absolutely fantastic and to see Davydenko win in the way he did was just great, destroyed the TB with a stream of big winners.

For me it was Federer vs Del Potro semi in RG 2009. Right after Pony won the third set, I thought to myself that Roger was going to lose and miss what was his golden chance to win RG and complete the career GS. Thus, half convinced that he was going to lose, I went to uni to do some work. When I got there I went to the casino and noticed that Fed was a break up in the fourth and just couldn't help watching the whole match until the end. It was great because I knew that with that win, RG was virtually in the bag for Fed.

PS: Sorry if this thread has been done before!

Nadal winning Wimbledon 2008 over Federer, dramatic match with the rain delays and the match finishing in darkness, but nevertheless, i was happy for Nadal that he finally achieved his boyhood dream. :D

Fed's 1st and 5th Wimbledons: the 1st because finally it looked like he might be meeting the expectations since he won the Wimby Juniors, and fulfilling the promise of his talent; the 5th because it would be his one opportunity to equal Borg's record - losing 07 and winning 08 wouldn't have done it.

Hmmm, every single FO 09 match Roger managed to win. I was stuck in a wedding for Del Potro -Roger, and was score-boarding from my cell. I was like "Wait for me, wait for me, take it to five baby" all the way back in my car. The match was so long, I got back home in time from the wedding in the middle of the forth.

A special mention goes to Hamburg final 07, first victory over Rafa on clay.

Del Potro beating Nadal on Miami09.
Soderling beating Nadal on RG09.
Federer beating Haas on RG09.
Federer beating Del Potro on RG09.
Federer beating Soderling on RG09.

The last one made me cry. Oh yeah.

On the other hand, I was cheering for Federer on Wimbledon09 final. Roddick makes THE unforced error, Federer jumps, I'm jumping too, and then... the camera focus on Andy's face.

Fuck, I felt really really sad and guilty.

PS: Nadal vs. Djokovic on Madrid09. I didn't care about the result, I was just happy for being watching that match.

In all seriousness, Marat winning AO 2005 was fantastic and I cheered for him throughout the tournament. Soderling's run at the French Open last year was also another one in which I watched from the first round.
