Roddick v Safin - Who will win?

The 2 of them are due to meet in 3rd round and this is a nasty draw for Roddick. They are set at 3 wins each but all have been on long, close encounters. What I saw of Roddick's first match, he didn't play well.
How do u think this will turn out?

Safin is still getting back to his best but he has always produced awesome tennis in Melbourne so who knows. Safin also hates tie breaks and most likely they will be Tie breaking so a little upperhand to Roddick. This is a 50-50 match imo.

It's when you lose sets to guys like Dudi Sela that you officialy know you have no business playing professional tennis anymore.

If the match is to happen: Roddick in 3 easy sets.

Way too early of a match...like the Moya/Blake first round only worse. GL to Andy if Marat makes it through his match :yeah:

It'll be interesting to see how Safin plays against Roddick if they do indeed play, that will probably determine the outcome.

Saying that you should retire just because you lose a set to Sela is too harsh. Even if he loses the match, I bet he'll make more money from this one tournament than most of us make in three months, so why quit?

Remember that in 2004 Safin didn't have any easy matches, and lost a set to Vahaly in the first round. Safin is streaky, and tends to play up to his opponent's level. I don't think he can be counted out just yet.

AnnaK_4ever

For sure Safin is less qualified player than Ljubicic as for now. Just look at his results in the last 2 years.

rmb6687

that doenst mean he is less qualified to play protennis and that was my contention. Sure he isn't ranked as highly as Ivan, but this is a whole other discussion about better player vs higher ranked player that i would rather not get into.

Speaking of which I remember Roddick doing exactly the same during the 2004 Wimbledon semi he played against Ancic where he also stormed off court because there was a threat of rain at a crucial juncture in the match(even though the rain itself did not halt play yet).

When that happened everyone was all over Roddick for doing it but this being Marat I suppose he gets away with it :o

its extremely difficult for Safin to win.
But if he really can do that, that would for sure be another 5 set match

Fumus
01-17-2007, 01:41 PM
I see going like this....

Roddick takes the opening set because he comes out the fresher, faster starting player. Marat plays a slopping game early and Andy rides that single break to claim the first set. In the second Marat opens his shoulders a bit more and begins to play more agressive, pinning Andy behind his own baseline, and tagging backhand winners. Andy eventually gives up a break mid-late in the set. In the third set, Safin and Roddick now begin to play super aggressive tennis, it works for Roddick but Safin comes in too much and gets passed off of some questionable approach shots, and misses some easy volleys. Mid-way to late in the set Roddick gets the crucial break and serves it out. Into the fourth and Marat is tossing racquets like candy, it doesn't matter though as he has now begun to play alot more controlled. This set goes to a tb and Roddick takes it 7-5, after the pair trade a couple mini-breaks on errors.

Roddick d. Safin

6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).

In Safin's defense he does this shit alot, I mean...in 2004 Safin went 4 sets with Vahaly and then 5 sets with Nieminen, Todd Martin, Blake, Andy Roddick, and then Andre Agassi before making the final.

In 2005, the year he won the title he went 4 sets with Ancic, 5 with Rochus, 5 with Federer, and 4 with Hewitt...

So you really can't predict Safin's form, or how he will play against anyone by the way he played the match before. Safin could go 5 sets with anyone, that's because his winners are so good it doesn't matter who he plays, and his errors are so bad sometimes he can gives sets away with them.

In 2004 Marat beat Vahaly, Nieminen and Blake in 4 sets, not 5 ;)
In 2005 he dropped only 2 sets en route to the semis.

Plus, needless to say, Nieminen, Blake and Martin all are far better players then Becker and Sela.

Safin's physical condition won't be an issue. Both of his fivesetters were very short by 5-set standards - just over 3 hours.. So, I don't expect this to matter. It will all come to how both guys approach this match mentally.. Safin in 4.

He could go down easily or wipe the floor with Roddick and it could also be a tussle. I predict Andy in five, but I'm not sure. Whoever wins, I just can't wait to watch!!!

No, tennis wins when Ivan is out of tournament ;)

I guess if you look at it that way, tennis has been losing alot lately but always seems to win at the GS.

Marat needs to win a higher % of the points when he gets his first serve in. It's amazing to see how many times on the hardcourts last year that he got his first serve bomb in and STILL lost the point like yesterday. If that happens against Roddick, then he will lose in straights.

This is a placement issue that he seemed to figure out once it rained, or lazy shots that he should make. (smashes, short returns that he sends long, lazy forehand in general)

My biggest issue with his game right now his return of his opponents second serve. If it gets back, it is weak, and just resets the point to the servers advantage. Note to Marat: you aint Nadal, you make too many UFEs.

I don't think that will be too much of a problem. Returning Roddick's serve on the other hand will - even Fed can't do anything with it when it's fully on.

I find it amusing that people discuss Roddick's game endlessly, as if there was anything to it other than an exceptionally big serve. Roddick's FH is the single most overrated shot in tennis - the way he hits it makes it look ten times as powerful, but that's no excuse; it's still shite, useful for easy midcourt putaways and nothing else. Bottom line, return Roddick's serve and he's toast.

Safin's problems and high UE count are usually due to going for too much with his groundstrokes - and Safin knows (or should know) that he doesn't really have to go for too much to win 90% of the rallies against someone who can't force a decision from the baseline such as Roddick.

I suspect (even if Roddick just serves Safin out of the court) that the funniest thing about this match will be the BH to BH rallies.

My thoughts exactly. I am not too sure of who the winner will be, it could be very much be a match that could go either way. However, as a Safin fan I would want to believe he'l be the winner, nonetheless, I think Roddick will wiin in four as well. Roddick matches well with Safin for some reason.

Despite the fact that Safin is a better athlete even for being so tall, he's got as a big a forehand as Roddick's (Roddick's though is more consistent, and in general is what makes the difference, along with the more consistency on the big serve when needed) Serve they are pretty even, then every where else Safin has the edge, a far superior backhand and return of serve. Yet Andy has the positive edge in the head to head. So who knows, but more than likely Roddick will be the victor.

MARAT SAFIN appeals as a good guy to have a beer with but not just for his off-beat humour and ability to attract members of the opposite sex.
Safin would more than pull his weight in a shout if the generosity he displayed on Monday night is an indication.
Trailing two sets to one against German Benjamin Becker, Safin's mind was not completely on his fightback.

While sipping on a sports drink at the change of ends, his thoughts turned to coach Alexander Volkov.

Hailing a ballboy, Safin ordered the youngster to deliver his mentor a drink.

"You know what? You see that guy over there with the moustache. You give it to him," Safin said. Volkov, a former player known as Wolfman, differs from most coaches on the tour by most often laughing at the on-court antics of his volatile employer.

* * *

THE post-match interviews conducted by former stars John McEnroe and Jim Courier in recent years have, on occasion, been more of a highlight than the matches. While that was not necessarily the case after the Safin-Becker five-set thriller, Courier still pulled out a gem when he asked Safin about the 'blonde-tourage' that once accompanied him.

"Over my experience - I am 27 now - I decided to take care of the business first and then the rest will come," Safin said. "I don't want to destroy them, or any lives, so they will keep their distance."
