Ouch torn ligaments, I did mine in one time and it really hurts, your ankle swells up like an orange, and whenever you stand straight all the blood rushes to your foot giving you agonising pain. It takes about 6-8 weeks for the swelling to go down, and about 3 months for the ligaments to heal properly, so he'll be out for a while, but it depends on the amount of ligaments he damaged, I damaged the majority in my ankle region so it took me 3-4 months for mine to properly heal.
