well done James. Carlos is only 30, but he plays like he's a lot older.

First time Blake beats Moya in straight sets.

His serve was damn good today.

Carlos looked so sad

Blake was hitting the ball amazingly. Carlos's serving dropped off after the first set and James jumped on those second serves...

Sorry for Carlos -- hope he goes on to have a great year.

Some amazing stuff from James. Great serving - wasn't broken once. Whereas he was destroying Moya's second serve. Only one hiccup -- a few dumb errors in the 1st set tiebreaker -- but for James, only one hiccup is good. His winners/UFE ratio is spectacular.

Poor Moya... Blake was killing him on the BH side.

Is there any other great player with such a difference between an awesome FH and a pretty pathetic BH?

Steffi Graf?

From the mens' side, El Aynaoui comes to mind as an obvious example, though the GREATNESS factor could be argued. I think Moya's backhand has actually slightly improved from his last heyday in 2004-05 (or maybe the rest of his game has just detoriated so the weakness doesn't glare as much). He was able to occasionally stay in rallies with it but the ability to hit consistent hard shots was never there. In the end, Blake got the break by just hitting the ball to Moya's forehand for 4 UE's in a row.

Good one from Blake, and better from Moya than I've seen in a while.

Blake in good form for sure. Moya could have won the first set. However James won a tight tiebreak and then really took Carlos to the cleaners plugging away at the BH. Looking forward to him schooling Rafa again

Well done James!
Great performance especially at the own service games (18 aces, 1 df, Moya had only 1 break point) :bigclap: + saving set point in the first set tie-break after leading 3:0 with double mini-break... :drive: Great!

Whats that, 4 straight first round losses for Carlos at the AO?
Fish 03, 04? 05? 06? 07 Blake.

Blake's serve was really consistent today as was his BH. He didn't go for too much off of the BH side, kept the ball in play, and when he got a crack at a FH, it was over.

His returns on second serves are getting more and more impressive. He is putting pressure on his opponents to get that 1st serve in because he will attack that 2nd serve and not just get it back in play.

Hey All,

I went to sleep at 2-2 in the first set. It was after 1:00 a.m. after all and I had to get up at 6:00 for work. I taped it and when I awoke - the tape was still taping. LOL! I look forward to watching it this evening.

Carlos has won at least one title since joining the tour I think PMac said - and IMO - he'll win others this year. Carlos still has lots of game. James has just been too good for him lately.

I agree with the ones that said that it certainly was too bad that this was a first round match for these two players. Moya has always been my favorite Spaniard. Them legs - ooh-la-la. I always loved Rafter's and Moya's legs. Even Lubi has nice legs to me.

Anyway - James must have had too much gumption and nerves for Carlos - evidently. James has so much confidence now - and has really tightened up his game. Over all - this year, he has been saving break points left and right. His % was just around 58 - but even so - he held his own. I love it when a player holds their own dang serve. He and his coach have really been tweaking some things it would seem.

I remember when JCF took James to school last year in their match over the summer. I forget what tourney it was. JCF was just on fire, and J. B. couldn't get anything going. I believe Carlos can get it back like that. And thirty is not old. He is an older player that is all. James is 27. It still depends on many things coming together for a player in any given match said player wins - most of the time.

"WAY TO HANDLE IT - JAMES" "KEEP ON KEEPING ON" "YOU CAN DO IT"

I thought that you were going to take a set at least. It was a very unlucky first round for him, hope he gets better luck during the rest of the year :o

Whats that, 4 straight first round losses for Carlos at the AO?
Fish 03, 04? 05? 06? 07 Blake.

This is the third straight first round loss of Moya in the AO.

In 2003 he lost to Fish in the second round.

And in 2004 he didn't play, in 2005 he lost to Garcia-Lopez and last year he lost to Pavel :o

PMac was saying he has won at least one title for the past 7 years. gogogirl's comment was a typo. :)
