And so, Nole made his first step towards the Big One. My following question is this:
Was Nico injured or does Nole send a warning to Roger Federer? And if so, is it a serious threat?

Ah, I forgot - the question is being made like that, because I saw some games and Massu wasn't walking in a normal way. Looked like he's got sth with his ribs

He deserves some credit for finishing the match, even if not injured. Many others would have thrown in the towel.

He was definitely favouring his left side in terms of weight transfer from the second set onwards, so yes I don't think he was 100%

But I expected nothing less from a warrior like him in terms of finishing the match, even Djokovic appreciated it at the net exchange

Too good. I hope Nole wouldn't pull a Safin and tank spectacularly in his next match.

The match was painful to watch as a Nico fan. There was a total lack of motivation from Massu's part :o :( I'm so upset with him  Djoko played well all the match and firstly simply outplayed Nico in first set, but then... Nico simply was out of the court... no game, no motivation, and it seems that the have lumbar aches, but my question is why he not called the trainer if he felt injured???

:sobbing: Well, that would explain this sad scoreline....I expected a tough match for Nico but not this.....And Nico is always a fighter-fighting for that last point even in the face of certain defeat-he is not one to "phone" it in. so this score was a BIG surprise....I hope the injury is not serious.

Good Luck to Djokovic in the rest of the AO.

Really impressive by Novak. Shame he's in Federer's quarter of the draw. I fancy him to take Lopez and JCF out pretty easilly though.

Ouch! x1000

Awesome stuff. Djokovic was simply too good for everyone. Congrats to him ;), I think he has the best future between the 3 youngsters.
As for Nico, I don't like to make up excuses when my faves lose but this time Nico had something for sure. He wasn't 100% fitter on court. Props to him for not retiring at least

massu sucks on hard courts. it was always going to be an easy win, but the scoreline suggests he has really stepped it up and could provide a tough test should he make it to come up against federer

Incredible result! Great for the young guy. Everyone who is hoping for Fed not to meet their favorite player, must really count on Nole now to take Fed out!

But again, Massu's Australia results have always been poor. So maybe one can't read too much into an early loss:

2006 R1 loss to Gilles Simon
2005 R2 loss to Kohlschreiber
2004 R1 loss to Nieminen
2002 R1 loss to Bjorkman
2001 R1 loss to Haas

Maybe it's not such a shock after all then

True, Massu is a claycourter but Nole prepared himself well by training a lot over the hollydays and he feels this will be his breakout year and he is on a good start

Yes, these are two separate issues is all I'm trying to say. Undoubtedly a thrashing if there ever was one. However, since Massu has had five R1 losses at the AO in six years, it is clear that Massu has difficulties with rebound or with Australian weather or both. So this result is in great part Novak and in great part Massu as well.
