hmm what's that all about?

Sydney really has been hit badly this year - it's getting worse than WTA Montreal last year. It's not like James needed a w/o to the final.

Not sure of the exact reason, but Jurgen has withdrawn from his semi final against Blake.

Well at least I won't lose all my vcash...still I was looking forward to another beatdown by blake. Anyway Blake will have more rest and perhaps be more fit for the open.

Apparently there is a strong rumour going around that the remaining players in the Sydney draw want to make Blake understand how insignificant Sydney is in the grand scheme of things in protest at the fine given to Nikolay Davydenko. An eye witness account states that "Blake and Melzer were ready to walk out on to court, Blake went first, and Melzer could clearly be seen to whisper in his ear 'Sydney doesn't matter', before walking back to the locker rooms citing a "headache" for his withdrawal.

The winner of Moya-Gasquet is set to do likewise and withdraw before the final, allowing Blake to win the coveted Sydney title yet again. It's expected that Moya will be his opponent, as he is more likely to listen to the advice of a seasoned pro.

I am taking the piss of course, but you never know.

Melzer is a piece of trash for withdrawing.

It's tennis...just play, shut up or go home and never come back. He's being a little baby as usual.

Melzer the latest withdrawal in Sydney

January 12, 2007 - 2:39PM

The Sydney International has lost further credibility after Austrian Jurgen Melzer joined the long list of withdrawals from the Australian Open lead-up event.

Melzer was due to play defending champion James Blake in the semi-finals on Friday afternoon, but pulled out ill.

He was understood to be on an IVP drip amid talk he was making plans to return home to Austria. An IV drip?!

Melzer is the seventh player this week to either withdraw or retire from a match in Sydney, not to mention Lleyton Hewitt's late scratching with a calf injury.

Rafael Nadal (adductor), Paradorn Srichaphan (wrist), Dmitry Tursunov (wrist), Nikolay Davydenko (foot), Svetlana Kuznetsova (respiratory) and Nadia Petrova (abdominal) also pulled out of the tournament citing either injury or illness.

...and the article continues on about the Davydenko comments.

Anyway, hope all of these injuries and illnesses are sorted out and most will be able to play the AO.

Likely his stomach couldn't hold anything including fluid and thus dehydrate.

Tough to play when you have an IV drip attached to your arm. Huh?
