Omg I love Gonzo. I love anyone who takes Hewitt out of the Aus Open. The match was brilliant, though nerveracking. When he argued with the umpire he was so cute, and I love how he broke the hearts of thousands of aussies (including my mum and grandpa who are diehard hewitt fans, and still don't think that Gonzo is any good, even though they saw him win.) What pissed me off is that none of Gonzo's shots made the hot shots of the day, but one of Hewitt's did, and Gonzo hit about 100 better shots than the one they chose. Anyway, Vamos Gonzo against Blake.

It was so cute. Jim Courier asked him if he watches womens tennis. Fena answered 'sometimes'. Then Jim asked 'who's your fave player,' Fena paused and said 'Argentina.' Jim was like, yeah well we need a name, then Fena smiled, and said 'Gisela Dulko, she's my girlfriend' and then he started laughing.

It's a beautiful day!!!!!

Fena, he's better than Rogi... beating Nadal in straights and is now 3-1 over him, like Berdych... wow!!! Impressive. Still to watch the match. Even if Rafa is injured again [or is it his same groin injury from Sydney??] no denying that Fena has been playing well the last three matches, in fact, getting better!!

Fena, get rid of that pretender Haas -- you deserve to be in the FINAL!

Well, Fena has been playing better than Rogi AND Rogi still has to beat Pandy, who is also playing well BUT Fena's wins are more impressive, beating Hewitt [not easy beating the fave at home], then BLAKE in straights and now Nadal in straights! Pandy, who did he beat? Ancic was the highest ranked guy HE beat but it took him 5 sets; he needed 4 to beat Hippo Oaf, who beats himself anyway... Fena s make the final... Haas won titles last year and Fena didn't but who did HE beat in those finals?? Federer? No, Haas took 5 sets to beat Kolya, who s have won... plus Fena is playing clean, unbelievable tennis. Never saw Larry so happy!!!

Gonzalez upsets Nadal Down Under
Associated Press
1/24/2007 9:30:54 AM

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Fernando Gonzalez rode his big serve and even bigger forehand to knock second-ranked Rafael Nadal out of the Australian Open and advance to his first Grand Slam semifinal.

Shedding the inconsistencies that hampered him in the past, Gonzalez was simply dominating in a 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Spaniard that took just over two hours. The Chilean broke Nadal five times, and his 41 winners were almost triple Nadal's 14. His 10 aces gave him 76 in five matches for the tournament lead; American Andy Roddick is second with 71.

The 10th-seeded Gonzalez said he may have never played better.

"Tonight I played really unbelievable tennis. I hope to continue this week. I am trying to slice more, trying to run more. I used to just hit, hit, hit, and maybe I win the point."

Nadal said he was hampered by pain in his left leg and buttock that cropped up after his last match, a five-setter against Briton Andy Murray.

"I can't run a lot," he said, adding that he hopes to play Davis Cup in a week but will go to a doctor first. "It was difficult to play one match like this, quarter-finals of one Grand Slam, with pain."

Gonzalez next plays Germany's Tommy Haas on Friday. The 12th-seeded Haas saved a match point before upsetting No. 3 Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 2-6, 1-6, 6-1, 7-5.

In mixed doubles action, Toronto's Daniel Nestor and Russian partner Elena Likhovtseva downed Australians Stephen Huss and Monique Adamczak 6-1, 6-4.

Nestor faces a big day Thursday.

He and Bahamian partner Mark Knowles, seeded third, take on top-seeded American twins Bob and Mike Bryan. Nestor and Likhovtseva also meet third-seeded Leander Paes of India and Samantha Stosur of Australia in the mixed quarter-finals.

"It was very difficult, I didn't feel like we had a lot of easy rallies," Sharapova said. "I felt I had to work on every point."

Twenty of Gonzalez's winners came off his stinging forehand, one of the best in the game, which kept Nadal off-balance and unable to get into the long rallies that he relishes.

"I think that my forehand was the key of the match," Gonzalez said. "I've been playing really good, feeling the ball, defending, serving really well and, of course, hitting my forehand all around the court."

Gonzalez broke Nadal twice in the first set and again in the opening game of the second when the Spaniard crashed a forehand into the net on double breakpoint.

Gonzalez saved a breakpoint in the eighth game with a stunning forehand swipe, and took a 2-0 lead when Nadal's service return landed long on set point.

Nadal called for a medical timeout because of his leg after the third game of the third set. Because he had to remove his long shorts, he had to leave the court for treatment.

Gonzalez pounced on a second serve at break point in the fifth game of the third set, ripping a forehand winner for a 3-2 lead.

Nadal sent a pair of forehands wide on the last two points while serving at 3-5 to surrender the match.

"If I am playing bad, you can go home and say `disappointing,' " Nadal said. "But today I just say, well, I can't do more. I try my best."

Congratulations Fernando :woohoo: First semi-final in a grand slam, it's awsome !!! I'm so happy and so proud of him :)

Even if Nadal was injured, he defeated him so for me, it's a great victory and he deserves that victory. I've just seen the sport news on french tv, and the only thing the journalist said is that "Nadal was injured", I think it's a bit unfair. Well, everybody wanted Rafa against Roger in the final, for once, it's going to change and it's great for tennis :)

I haven't seen the match cause I was at work, but will be in front of my tv for the semi-final, as I don't work on friday

I'm so happy to see Tommy Haas in the SF as well. So I hope to see a great match with a victory for Fernando. He has good chances to go to the final, VAMOS :bounce:

Although I am not a real fan of Gonzalez, I do like him a lot. I am a Rafa fan, but even if Rafa was injured, Gonzo is playing incredibly well in this tournament and he had a great match against Rafa.

So I wish him the best of luck against Haas.

I knew he was gonna win, Fernando's form has been just too good. I missed the first set of the match because I was on the train back from the tennis, but omg i was jumping up and down in my lounge room when he won. I had a feeling it was gonna be that easy too. Tommy Haas isn't in nearly as good form as Fena is. I don't know, but when I watch Fena play, he just forces you to get so involved. I'm just happy that I jumped on his bandwagon at Kooyong, and got to enjoy every one of his many victories at the Aus Open. Viva Fena in the final (does that even make sense), coz I know he's gonna kick Haas' butt.

I have been a fan of Fena for a while....but that fandom has always been tempered by his old go-for-broke style. The talent was there- the discipline was not.

Well- with this new discipline and hard work ethic he is a joy to watch. I have had so much fun watching him these past three matches and I really, really hope he makes it to the final. :)

I don't know whether I've already mentioned this, but I was at Haas' match against Davydenko, and Haas wasn't doing anything spectacular with the ball. He didn't seem to be playing brilliantly. Gonzalez has the 'wow' factor that Haas doesn't have, so I don't think he'll have any problems beating Haas.

This match was unbelievable. I'm just so grateful that I knew that I wanted to follow Gonzo's career at Kooyong, so I could witness this incredible journey that he's been on at the Aus Open. And the Australia Day fireworks....the timing could not have been better. It was like the fireworks were for Gonzo. Today was like Australia/Gonzo day for me. Now lets give Federer a run for his money.

Fernando's post match interview

Q. Given the match last night, how important was it for you to come out and make real statement this evening?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: I'm enjoying the tennis. I've been playing the last four months in a very high level and I feel that I'm not doing too much, so that's very important, what you feel on court.

Q. Did it ever happen to you that you make three mistakes in one match?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Never. And one was really stupid that I did (smiling). But normally I did like 45 mistakes and 2 winners many years, so now I'm really happy because I've been doing this for the last matches.

Q. Is there any part of you that's wondering where this kind of tennis was for six, eight years?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Yeah, it was many things, you know. I feel that I have a big hole in my left side. Now I don't have it. Now I'm more fit, you know. I can play longer. Before I could panic if I stay too much here (referring to the backhand). Now I can stay here and wait for the other guy to make something or I can create many things.

Q. You're going to play Federer in the final. What do you think about this?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: It's a tough match. He's the No. 1 player in the world by far. He's the favorite. I lost many times with him.

But now I'm in a better ‑‑ I mean, I'm playing much better now than the last time that we play. And it's only one match, you know. I'm going to give everything that I have to try to win my first Slam.

Q. Do you think you can maintain the ability to come up with the creative shot‑making that you had in this match against Roger and in a Grand Slam final?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: I mean, I'm going to try to do the same thing that I've been doing: playing good tennis, don't do it too much, because my forehand side I feel I can do whatever I want.

I'm going to have Roger on Sunday. Is going to be a tough, but I'm playing a great level. I didn't play long matches the last three matches. I mean, I'm almost a hundred percent.

Q. How much is Roger an inspiration in general and for you in particular?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: It's a lot because I'm playing the most important match in my life and he's the best player of the last many years. He's winning all the time. He have to lose sometime. I'm going to try to do it on Sunday.

Q. Do you look forward to it?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Yeah. It's only one more match (smiling). It's pretty exciting for me.

Q. When you came into this tournament, did you think you would be able to take as many big names as you have on the way through?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: I always come to every Slam with a big illusion. Maybe the first two matches ‑‑ first match I play really good. Second match I didn't play my best tennis. I was two sets to one down. I came back. I was feeling really good.

But I get here like eight days in advance. After, when I play Lleyton, I play really good tennis. After that I think ‑‑ I mean, I have a big change on my mind and in my tennis.

Q. Does your record with him, does that work in your advantage or does it make your job tougher?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: With Roger?

Q. Yes.

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: I don't think so. I never beat him. I don't have advantage with Roger. But in tennis, you always have a new opportunity. I have a really nice opportunity now.

Q. Do you feel like he's going to see a different Fernando González on Sunday?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Absolutely. I mean, I've been playing much better. Last time we play was maybe three or four months ago in Basel final. But he was playing really good. Me, too. But I was a little bit tired. It was like third final in a row.

Of course, he's the favorite player, but I'm going to try my best and I look forward to win the match.

Q. Do you feel comfortable on Rod Laver Arena these days? Do you like the venue and the crowd?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Yeah. I really enjoy. I mean, is a really big event. The stadium is really nice. The people is ‑‑ I mean, it's fantastic crowd. Also have always the Chilean support, so it's really important for me.

Q. Before you said you would be really excited to play this final. Americans use "excited" for different reasons. For you "excited" means also you can be nervous?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Of course. I mean, but today I was ‑‑ I have enough nervous to be focused, you know. That's good. I never play a Slam final, but there is always a first time. I'm having really good time on court playing this kind of tennis.

Q. Would you say this court surface maximizes your strengths, the Rebound Ace?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Yeah, it's very similar to hard court. I mean, it's different, but it's a nice court because you can play baseline, you can serve and volley, you can do everything like a hard court.

Q. What does it take for you to keep hitting these winners one after another? What does it take?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: It's the best thing that tennis have, you know, try to go for a winner forehand. For me, is really ‑‑ is the biggest thing, I think.

Q. People used to say about you, He's a good player, but he doesn't have anything but a forehand. You're more than that now, aren't you?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Yeah. I can go in. I work a lot on my net game. I can stay in the back longer time now and wait for the right opportunity.

Q. What made you decide last year, I'm fed up being a good player; I want to be a champion? What made you decide that?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: I been like three or four years between the 11 and 25, like going up, down, up, down. I feel like I improve other things.

Maybe if I improve the things and I don't improve my rankings, even I try and I make more fun my game, you know. Always I was playing the same and same. I need to do some other things. After that I start to win some matches not playing my best tennis, so that give me a lot of confidence.

Q. Is it more fun?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Yeah. I mean, if you're winning (smiling)...

But I can go in, I can slice, I can do all the things that I never did it before.

Q. Stefanki said you were very brave to change your backhand. In which way did you change it?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Tried to do it more simple, because before I try to do too much. Now just simple. And it works really good with Larry. Larry, he likes a lot the good techniques, simple techniques, try to do always the same.

Q. He didn't change anything with your body, with the grip?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Yeah, with the body. Yeah, most with the body. On the backhand, on the volley, little bit on the grip.

Q. What is the reaction at home?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: I don't know. I just talked to my mom, but it's like 8 in the morning. But I know that many people wake up early to see the match, because tennis is very popular at home. They respect because I have to play next week in Viña del Mar. Then we have Davis Cup against the champions at home. They're in the summertime now, so they're very excited about it.

Q. Are you aware that a lot of fans call you Gonzo? Do you know what that means?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: The Americans call me Gonzo.

Q. Yes.

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: What does that mean?

Q. Kind of crazy, unpredictable, kind of a wild man on the court.

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: I didn't know it. I thought it was for González.

Q. You have a lot of fans out there. Are you afraid to give up this label?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: It's okay because it's true (laughter).

Q. Were you back in Chile when Rios played the final here at the Australian Open? Do you remember the atmosphere in your country at that time?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Yeah. I wait for the match live. Unfortunately he lost straight sets.

Q. Korda.

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Yeah. But everybody was expecting that match because tennis, the last years, been really big, with Marcelo, after with the Olympics, and I hope on Sunday.

Q. How much do you think you improved since the last Australian Open?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Many things. Maybe in the last six months. I mean, I was talking to my trainer now. Last year I lost first round, five sets. I cramped. Really bad match. Maybe the worse match in my life. Not maybe; I think was.

Q. What match was that?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: First round last year. I lost against a qualifier playing really bad tennis. Maybe I was here like three or four days. Now I'm here like three weeks. It's really nice. It's really nice because in this position is better, going better.

Totally impressed w Fena's fulfilled tennis, after all these years, now finally w the right coach to help him realize his best level and possibly his biggest dream!

All of CHILE must be going totalmente loco!

I'd like a high level, competitive match for this exciting final... May the best player win. Fena has proven that HE is the second-best player. ;)

Well, that's it...7-6(2),6-4,6-4

I'm bummed he lost and wish he would have taken that first set but really, getting to a slam final was so wonderful. He's played phenomanal tennis and really Fena played wel today-he made some great shots. Just couldnt' make a dent on Roger's serve after the first set. He had some shoulder problems that he called the trainer for after the first set and that may have hampered him a bit.

:worship: Fernando is, as always, a champion in my book and I am so very proud of his performance not only in previous matches but this one also. :worship:
