Well it's up early today b/c the other half is playing and not much overlap, I guess.

Stadium 1
Starting at 10am
Irakli LABADZE (GEO) vs Agustin CALLERI (ARG)
Not Before Noon
Gisela DULKO (ARG) vs Lindsay DAVENPORT (USA)
followed by
Taylor DENT (USA) vs James BLAKE (USA)
followed by
Wayne ARTHURS (AUS) vs Tim HENMAN (GBR)

Not Before 7pm
Nicolas ESCUDE (FRA) vs Andy RODDICK (USA)
Nathalie DECHY (FRA) vs Fabiola ZULUAGA (COL)

Stadiums 2 and 3 are all doubles and Club matches

----

So on US TV we'll get Dulko/Davenport then Dent/Blake and Escude/Roddick at night. Nice!

FiBeR

I really really really hope home player Gisela Dulko beats Davenport to make it through!

But as every time i cheer a player he/she loses.. hehe.. i'll go for Davenport! Go!! Break a leg ;)

Nice. Roger gets a day off tomorrow, and he still going at it with Allegro right now...

Deboogle!.
03-17-2004, 02:46 AM
Yea they're doing top half then bottom half now, so yeah. The top half is actually a little better off b/c they'll get a day off in between their QF and SF where the bottom half won't, if I'm looking at the schedule right.

I hope Davenport will be nice, and allow Gise to win 3 or 4 games.

Looks like Calleri's thumping Labadze: 5-0* at the mo.

Deboogle!.
03-17-2004, 05:32 PM
at 3pm eastern ESPN will show Lindsay, then the coverage will switch to ESPN2 at 5 and they'll show Blake/dent, I'm so excited about that one!

and yes, looks like it could be a short day for Calleri

Ah, c'mon Freak, I want to see you in the final against Federer - a rematch of their junior Wimbledon final six years ago! The further he goes in this tournament, the funnier it gets...

By that way this match will end in about 20 min ;)

Labadze's one of the few Top 100 players I've never seen play... aargh, they must be showing it on Sky right now! To think, if he got to the semis ESPN would suddenly have to bring up facts about him and mention the Agassi win from 2001.

Glad to see IL has nearly doubled his points tally in those last two games. Might it be a bit closer in the second?

Buddy

yup! now it's getting tighter... a third set seems probable... i think perhaps...Labadze is trying to see how to play against Calleri as he does not have much experience...now he's more used to it...

is it better to serve first or second in 3rd set as a general rule?

Deboogle!.
03-17-2004, 06:23 PM
Well if you serve first and always hold, you're always the front-runner, so if you break at 4-3 you serve for the match or if you break at 5-4 you win the match, where as if you serve second you have to play catchup every time.

bullet proof
03-17-2004, 06:24 PM
i think it's better to serve first. Who served first in the two sets won the set. And of course the other has to catch up, if there isn't a break

Woo-hoo Irakli! I thought he might choke after failing to convert a matchpoint and that love game for Calleri... but now he's into his first ever TMS quarterfinal! Erm, had he even won a round at a TMS before now? Should do wonders for his mired ranking, I suppose... and he upset Blake in Memphis last year I recall, so he may even have a chance at the semis! At least I'll get to see him play for the first time, anyway.

Scotty5

And Agassi is going to have to play a lot better than he did last night if he's going to beat Coria. If Coria watched Youzhny, he should see that bh down the line and drop shots are still good ploys against Agassi. Andre will want to serve much better than 43%, and make fewer UE's.

It's nice to have dreams :) :

2003
US Open, Hard, Q
NY, U.S.A.
Agassi won
6 4 6 3 7 5

2003
Roland Garros, Clay, Q
France
Coria won
6 4 3 6 2 6 4 6

2003
Australian Open, Hard, R16
Australia
Agassi won
6 1 3 1

2002
Cincinnati TMS, Hard, R32
Ohio, USA
Agassi won
6 0 6 2

Hehehe Correct me if I'm wrong , but I don't think a match is decided on statistics (And I'm afraid that 2 of the 3 winning matches of Agassi were when Coria wasn't up to his level.. Moreover, -personally- I think Agassi is getting rusty)

You call me a dreamer! :p Maybe I'm wrong, but if I'm not, you'll have to eat up your statistics tomorrow ;)

Good luck anyway! :D

Agassi has no chance tomorrow

James, when he's on, looks FREAKING AMAZING. He's passing Taylor all over the place, hitting lucky shots, returning fantastically!

One game, he was down 40-0 on Taylor's serve and he hit 3 return winners and 3 passing shot winners to break. I mean just wow.

James is 21-10 on winners/errors and Taylor 15-10, after the first set.

May i remind you that this is a SLOW surface which helps James game a hell of a lot more then Dent's. But really to play the way Dent plays you have to have to volleys of Rafter/Edberg, and no one out there today has volleys as good. Dent is too predictable.

Not bad Timbo, not bad at all - Arthurs was 40-0 up in his opening service game and Henman won five points in a row, several on a first serve, to get the immediate break.

Sjengster
03-17-2004, 11:04 PM
And follows up with a love hold, make that nine points in a row. Now whatever you do, don't repeat the mistakes of the Corretja match and give up this lead, a break against Arthurs is a rare event.

US Open 2002, beat Philippoussis (very lucky to get a retirement in the fourth set, but Schalken had already taken the third and gone a break up when Philippoussis sustained his unfortunate injury), Ljubicic, Kuerten and Gonzalez. The last two in particular were great, since both times the Sky presenters basically wrote him off as a walkover into the next round for his opponent, and both times he proved them wrong. He's made two Wimbledon QF, the US Open semi and the QF again in New York last year, and on all four occasions has only lost to the champion.

Ouch, two double faults from Arthurs in that last game, one on setpoint, but Henman takes the first set 6-1 with a triple break! Few have managed to do that to Arthurs... I do recall that Nalbandian bagelled him in Cincy last year, which considering his returning skills isn't too surprising.

Oh certainly, that's what I said in GM in the thread about why you like your favourite player, that he'd achieved a lot more than more gifted players (e.g. Arazi, Malisse, Escude) had done. Bails isn't a bad presenter, but he has a weakness for the obvious and big power games - I remember after Ferrero lost to Kucera last year in Montreal, he described Kucera as a guy "who's like a spider, he sucks you into his web and then bores you to death" - not exactly appreciative of subtlety.

so many reasons why hes never won a slam and certainly not lack of ability, he has a blind spot in head when hes just broken OR just cruised, he punches air with clenched fist but doesnt convince me, its a front, the mental belief side has stopped him winning wimbledon and going beyond round 4 in the other 3 slams

You lucky beggar Henman, good job for him that Arthurs is really struggling on his serve - he's been broken four times and held just once, and it's still only 1-1.

Ah yes, Petch is the best commentator and analyst of the lot, he's always opinionated and informed and he knows exactly the right thing to say about each player. But talking about taking the piss, Fleming is hilarious whenever he mocks Chris Bailey - last year in Rome Bails made reference to Campo Centrale and said "I've been told by the PA to pronounce it like that, is that all right?" to which Fleming beamed back at him, "That's wonderful Bails, you could almost pass for an Italiano!" Ah, the look on Chris' face... fantastic.

Arthurs is absolutely appalling, he just love his serve for the fourth time in a row and the fifth overall. It's quite embarrassing at present to think that Henman actually gifted him the lead at the start of this set. Still, at least he's not having a diabolical serving performance like Bjorkman had, and that's the key to why Arthurs isn't doing much on the returns.

Henman to 40-30 from 0-30... as Fleming observed a couple of years ago, unlike the top players he just can't get himself in the zone and roll through a match, he's always fretting and losing concentration and worrying too much at each new stage of the match.

I totally agree he can have a patch where he plays gorgeous shots and his court positioning but his mindgame isnt good point to point and duration of a set.......he does soemthign great liek roill a backhand to break a huge server and then shits himself after doing it and suffers "paranoia" about tactics to hold serve to keep the break.

he thinks too much and thinking is always his undoing

Sjengster
03-17-2004, 11:59 PM
Nice way to serve it out to love, but improvements will be needed against Roddick (or Escude for that matter, perhaps even more so given their record). Having said that, I think a large part of why Henman lost his serve at the start of the second was because of a lack of concentration due to the amazing ease of the first... it's safe to say that the same won't apply against Roddick if he does happen to be a set up.

George, that's exactly what I thought before the Paris match last year, but he won it - just about, but he still got through in straight sets. And he has beaten Roddick on US hardcourts as well, although the scoreline and the saved matchpoint shows that he only just scraped out the victory.

if roddick is in his hard court mode ala 2003 then not lot of hope for tim even though tim beat him during his great ru last year....legg manson tournament i think it was.

its hard to say as sometimes henman steps on a court and take all his frustrations out at not winning his home slam....whos to say??? another tms would....but one thing george hit on "bottle" hes a guy who really needs confidence big style and 2 back to back great wins like paris and hes rolling

A guy with Tim's game and ability should have won a TMS before Paris last year, of course he has the tools to beat Roddick and he owns Federer. But the fact he has never passed the 4th round of any Slam outside of Wimbledon is a contributing factor to my previous statement.

Tim can beat Andy on ANY surface. Tim returns quite well with variety, this troubles Andy. Clearly he passes well, or maybe Rogi wouldent have quite as much trouble with Tim. And of course Tim's Serve & Volley game when its on troubles Andy alot. Tim's Serve & Volleying vs. Andy at the Open last year was quite pathetic to say the least.

armaniman
03-18-2004, 12:21 AM
Tim carries a huge monkey on back called british media and would die if it meant being first brit to turn british slam failure on its head.

He does suffer from mind fragilty and paranoia and over thinking though as after paris he was saying " when i relax and play like i dont care i amaze myself"

Sjengster
03-18-2004, 12:23 AM
Accepted George, but I see no reason why he can't make that final improvement necessary to win Wimbledon this year. Like most serve-volley players his game took longer to develop than others and he only started having good results around the age of 21 and 22, so I think he has a hope of finally breaking through. The big question, as ever with Henman, is that damned serve, which I think he's almost starting to analyse too much. It'll never be a huge weapon, but if he could get a little more pace out of it but still be consistent he could get through some of those Wimbledon matches he's lost in the past. Except against Hewitt, of course. That is a completely lost cause.

Definitely a mistake to characterise Henman as a potential nemesis for Roddick though, as some of the Roddick fans seem to be doing - Henman's wins were tight, Roddick's was easy, and given his new propensity for serve-volleying Henman will have to think about his tactics carefully going into that match, if indeed he does play Roddick.

Sjengster
03-18-2004, 12:26 AM
The forehand is surely his dodgiest shot, when it's on it's flat and penetrating and when it's off he just flails at it wildly and dumps short balls into the net or mishits them long. I think his best shot besides the volley is the backhand overhead, every commentator always notes that it's hard to get a lob over him on that wing because of his athleticism. Ahem... except Hewitt, of course.

Fedex
03-18-2004, 12:31 AM

True as a serve/volleyer his game did take longer to develop, but I see him faltering at Wimbledon again when the chance is there for him to take it. Yes, the serve is a problem and as armani mentioned he isn't the strongest mentally either.

You know Sjengster you read my report about the Canas/Henman match at the AO? That much sums up Henman to me the guy hit 100 winners, leads 4-1 0-30 on the Canas serve and I was still confident that Canas could win.

Roddick fans have never been known to be the most rational, though a few Fed fans definitely give them a run for his money. This match isn't a given so we'll find out soon enough if they meet up or not.

Sjengster
03-18-2004, 12:35 AM
Ah, but that's Canas. As Tennis Lurker observed, Canas is the master of beating Henman in the most painful ways. When he plays Henman he is Hewitt in all but name in terms of his game style, but it's even worse because he doesn't comprehensively thrash him like Hewitt does; he lets Henman think he's got a chance, goes into a tough five-setter and then still somehow pulls out the victory.

Fedex
03-18-2004, 12:37 AM
Like i've said before, if Roddick beats Escude, he will have plenty of practice hitting passing shots, so he will be better prepared for Tims game. It would almost be better if he played a baseliner tonight, so Roddick will not have had recent practice consistantly hitting passing shots

armaniman
03-18-2004, 12:39 AM

its mad isnt it as you get players with lesser talent but they thrive on pressure and a break of serve they will be born from and get excited and follow it up.

theres no thread for the best party piece shot but if there was i think you have to go a long way to beat tims backhand smash where he cant see where hes sending it......its class lol

Exactly there are some players with plenty of natural ability and talent that don't do it justice. Then you get guys like Hewitt, Muster and to a lesser extent Schalken who have made the most of the gifts they have got and have had successful careers.

For instance Mauresmo is one of the most gifted players on the WTA. Yet her choking ability, and always being plagued by injuries, are the only things keeping her from winning majors. I also think Srichaphan is a waste of talent on the mens side.

Srichapan needs to change coaches, I am not sure his dad can take him to the next level. I like the guy a lot and think he has a lot of talent, but I have hardly ever seen him play a tactically thoughtful match in his career.

Hicham Arazi a waste of talent, but there are others.

i was never gonna be brave enoguh to mention heiwtt but you so thankyou lmao.....

his courage and heart and risk taking is what had brought his success to date...sometimes he slaps the ball like hes swatting a fly in a hurricane and his tactics are bizarre, he hit lobs, will try anything and screw his face up and go phyco at a fault that saves him matchpoint.

theres so much talent that passes thorugh with no reward for it, agassi is probably most obvious one who has combined talent with mental.

It took Agassi years before he was able to do it.

I remember what Lendl said about him in his early days "He is only a forehand and a haircut."

srichapan needs a stiff drink and get off the treadmill...his body cant get a bigger 6 pack...you dont need to hit shots at 200mph or through the legs in front of asia crowd and you can chill out and have a nice all round game lol

lmao @ what lendl said, its classic archive....but lendl in the head was brutal....just looking at his eyes over the net was like a break of serve against you

armani check out the thread on GM, there is a discussion about all the older players.

Yes, I agree with the above statements, I mean the Asian crowd well a few trick shots wouldn't hurt at 5-1 or 5-2 up, though he needs to be winning some matches and quickly.
