Tennis / Bring on Luxembourg, says confident Noam Okun
By Rami Hipsh

Israel's Davis Cup team was in a buoyant mood yesterday in its press conference ahead of this weekend's Europe/Africa Zone Group 1 tie against Luxembourg.

Luxembourg's top player is Gilles Muller, ranked 115 in the world. Muller has beaten Israeli No. 1 Noam Okun twice, and although Okun is ranked 53 places below Muller, he was confident he would defeat him on home ground.

"I have seen Muller playing this year and he is not in top form," Okun said. "He has beaten me twice in the past, but I raise my game at home, and especially in the Davis Cup."

Expectations of Dudi Sela are also high after the world No. 168 made the second round of the Australian Open, losing only after a marathon, five-set battle with Russia's Marat Safin.

"The Australian Open gave me a lot of confidence," Sela said. "I believe I can beat any player outside of the Top 20."

Doubles duo Andy Ram and Yoni Erlich will make up captain Eyal Ran's team for the encounter.

"When I was in Australia, I scouted Luxembourg's No. 1 racker Gilles Muller, and we are learning his weak points ahead of the match," Ran said.

"The other Luxembourg players are relatively anonymous, and we have very little information about them. But we are concentrating on ourselves, and not on our opponents."

Making up Luxembourg's team are Laurent Bram, ranked 1,104 in the world; Gilles Kremer, ranked 1,421; and Mike Schweidweiler, who is unranked.

I think from so much confidence just because of one match you can only lose miserably ...
why can't they have a more realistic look at the situation??
and what's that crap about "concentrating on ourselves, and not on our opponents." ???

I have a bad feeling about this... :o

GMG... some more details for you...

It was clear Bram was the better of the Luxemburg duo, but his serve was not solid occasionally... in my book he had 5 DF, 4 of them in his last 2 service games...

Bram served first for Luxemburg in the 2nd game, and lost his serve on 30.
Luxemburg broke back in the 5th game on Erlich's serve, scoring 5 succesive pts after Israel led 40:0.
Erlich got in trouble again in the 9th game, in which Luxemburg had 5 break points but lost them and Israel eventually won. Israel had 1 SP in the 10th game but Bram managed to hold and level.
Then Andy Ram, who had a solid serve elsewhere during the match, lost the 11th game on 15 and Schiedweiler served for the 1st set at 6:5. But he got only one set point, which he lost on DF (the only one that I recoreded...). Israel had 8 break points in this game before getting the break to 6:6.
The tie break was close all the way. Israel got a mini-break on Bram's serve to go 2:0 up, but Luxemburg broke back to 2:2, and from there each team held serve until 5:4, when Bram was broken again and Israel led 6:4. Bram saved the next point with an ace (he had 2 in the match, Schied none), but Israel won the next one on Ram's serve to close the set.

The rest of the match was a different ball game...
Luxemburg didn't get even to one deuce on Israel service games. Their scores read 0,15,15,30,0,30,15... in fact, Luxemburg got to 40 pts only 3 times on Israel serve throughout the match, all in the 1st half.
In the 2nd set, Luxemburg got to more than 15 pts only once, in the 5th game, where Israel needed 3 break points to win it. 2 breaks were against Schied serve, one against Bram.
Scheid lost his serve again in the 3rd game of the 3rd set when Israel went 2:1 up. He managed to win a service game after 4 succesive losses in the 7th game (4:3 Israel at that stage), but Bram made 2DF in the 9th game to give Israel 3 match points. 2 were saved, but the 3rd started the celebrations in the Israeli team...

I hope you get better luck against Italy in July or the loser of Slovak Republic-Macedonia match in September. Realistically, survival in division 1 is the most you can hope for until you get another player in the top 200 or even top 300.

Israel won its first match of the year for the first time since 2001, and the first in group 1 since 1998, the last time it reached the WG play offs.

Asia/Oceania:
5th loss in a row for Pakistan, beginning from WG playoffs 2005. They need to win their next match to avoid relegation for the 2nd straight year.

I was there today as well, and here are some details...

I only botherd to write the games...

Andy Ram vs Laurent Bram:
Andy broke in the 3rd (2:1) and 7th (5:2) to win the 1st set easily 6:2.
In the 2nd set, Bram broke in the 2nd (2:0), Andy broke back (1:2) but lost serve again after leading 40:0 (1:3). Andy broke back in the 7th (3:4) and both held serves until Laurent broke in the 12th to win the set 7:5.
In the 3rd set Andy got the only break in the 3rd to go 2:1 up, and held all his serves till the end.

Dudi Sela vs Gilles Kremer:
Dudi got quick breaks in the 1st and 3rd to go 4:0 up, Gilles broke back to 4:2 and the rest went with the serve.
Gilles started the 2nd set with a break and went 2:0, Dudi broke back and levelled 2:2. Bram went 4:2 up with another break, and served for the set at 5:3 after they exchanged breaks in the 7th and 8th. But Dudi came back with 4 succesive games and won 7:5. Actually there were more service games broken than held in this set.

End of one of the easiest wins in Israel Davis Cup history... 9:1 in live sets and 13:2 overall...
