They made two moves when JCF withdrew. Gaudio became the 33rd seed and got a bye into the second round and lucky loser Jeff Salzenstein will play Alex Bogomolov.

Gaudio is #33 seed and yes, moved into where Ferrero was w/a bye into the 2nd round.

Anyone know where the rest of the Qualifiers have been placed in Main Draw??

Web site and atptennis still BLANK

Yeah, the official sites just a tad slow getting this information out.

From today's OoP, we can probably guess where the qualifiers have been placed. Ed at OnTheLine has list of the matches, that's where I got them from.

According to SteveG, lucky loser Salzenstein was pooled with the other qualifiers before placement into the draw, so he doesn't go into Gaudio's previous spot (83) directly; he is drawn to face Alex Bogomolov. Escude, who would have played Gaudio originally, now plays Verdasco.

Weiner, Glenn (q) v Ulihrach, Bohdan
Niemeyer, Frederic (q) v Martin, Alberto
Tursunov, Dmitry (q) v Johansson, Thomas
Bogomolov, Alex (wc) v Salzenstein, Jeff (ll)
Arthurs, Wayne (q) v Browne, Federico (q)
Levy, Harel (q) v Vahaly, Brian
Mantilla, Felix v Larose, Simon (q)
Verdasco, Fernando (q) v Escude, Nicolas
Hernych, Jan (q) v Davydenko, Nikolay
Gambill, Jan-Michael v Van Lottum, John (q)
Labadze, Irakli v Ascione, Thierry (q)
Lapentti, Giovanni (q) v Dent, Taylor

Like you I haven't seen the updated draw, so this is not official, just based on the best info I have.

Looks as though Moodie hasn't brought his serve to the court, although aren't the IW courts supposed to be notoriously slow? That may explain why Horna is now leading 5-2 with a double break.

Corretja breaks back to level at 5-5 in the third...

What the heck is Pavel doing being dragged into a third set by Karlovic, who literally is all serve? I've checked the stats and Karlovic is winning 81% of points on his first serve and just 38% on the second, not to mention the fact that Pavel had breakpoints to put the match to bed at 4-4 and 5-5 in the second set. One sloppy service game from him and it really is all over...

That's what I meant bunk, how could he waste 17 breakpoints... granted, he probably couldn't see the ball on most of them, but there were a couple of second serves on those return points that he didn't make the most of.

Ouch, Ferrer was up 40-0 and then not only lost five points in a row but double faulted on matchpoint... good job Corretja was playing someone in almost as big a slump and almost as low on confidence as himself. Congrats to him, although I think Robredo will take him apart in the next round rather like Srichaphan will Haas.

Sjengster
03-12-2004, 10:05 PM
Come to think of it, I suppose it all depends on whether Srichaphan's ankle has fully heeled yet - it hadn't during those European indoor tournaments he played recently and in Dubai, so if he's still having problems Haas could take it. But while today was a good win, Enqvist is ranked in the mid-60s and is on the comeback trail himself whereas Srich is a Top 15 player. They should have played a couple of years ago in Long Island, but Haas had to give him a walkover because of his shoulder and Paradorn ended up taking his title.

i cant imagine the type of threat karlovik would be if he had a better return game. He seems to hold on his on soooo easily....

well, Karlovic had some stretches in the match when holding serve was not so easy for him.
For example he had to serve 256 times while Pavel only needed 212 for his games
that shows that Karlovic's games have been much closer

but I also agree that he would be really dangerous if he had a better all around game... 83% winning percentage on 1st serves is really great, also 24 aces... but the 11 double faults (especially in the 3rd set tiebreak) were the neckbreaker for Ivo

Sjengster
03-12-2004, 10:39 PM
Karlovic will always play breakers because he has such an untouchable service game but also very poor returning - in the last two Grand Slams, he played twelve consecutive tiebreaks from the second set of his match with Arazi at the US Open. Both times he won three straight, then lost three straight. Although I do recall that rather like here, he was up a break against Schalken serving for the second set and lost serve for the only time in the match - if your serve is normally so devastating but lets you down at the most important time, something is wrong. Mind you, that's the story of all the Croatian players really.

Looks like TDent started off right where he left off. 2 double faults in his opening game to give away the break.

Taylor is aweful so far this season

Deboogle!.
03-12-2004, 11:55 PM
He just double faulted three more times in that game to go down a double break  5 DFs in 3 service games (really, two actually lol)

Poor Taylor, I'm really starting to just plain feel terribly for him.

6 double faults in three service games

Deboogle!.
03-13-2004, 12:02 AM
he was down 0-40 on his serve to stay in the set and fought back to deuce and then lost it anyway. Holy shitake. 6DFs, 27% first serves in. dang

Deboogle!.
03-13-2004, 12:04 AM

1-6 6-4 6-4

16 double faults, 1st serve at 43%, he was broken more than Lapentti and won fewer points and still won. good lord. Guga won't be so forgiving.

Neely
03-13-2004, 01:26 AM
yeah, that was quite an effort for him to win this match despite 16 double faults... wow

reminds me somehow of his match against Chela earlier this year at the AO... he also got broken uncountable times over these 5 sets and still won

SaFed2005
03-13-2004, 01:32 AM
he's been getting broken like crazy lately... well he still managed to pull off a win, atleast for now...

Yes, but the problem is that as soon as he faces someone good, he loses. Well, Guga is good and is defending finalist and has been playing well lately , so Taylor will have a tough time if he plays like that again. Same thing happened at the AO, yea he won the Chela match but then he met Andy who was playing well and got SLAUGHTERED.

I keep hoping this is some temporary mental slump, but the longer it continues the more I'm just starting to pity him. I really hope he can turn it around sometime soon.

Well I said last week after his match against Andy but it looks like he is at it again tonight against van Lottum. 13 aces and 86% first serves in the first set. yikes.

Deboogle!.
03-13-2004, 03:48 AM
"this is gonna be a slow, painful 3-setter, but would you want it any other way with Todd Martin playing?"

Well it looks like he only played one bad game that cost him the set, it's not like he tanked it or anything lol. I mean he's serving incredibly again, and did in the second set too. Who knows

Scotty5
03-13-2004, 05:04 AM
So Andy vs. Jan-Mike must be on Sunday? Hope it's a good quality match, and not just a parade of aces.

Deboogle!.
03-13-2004, 05:07 AM
Yea it'll be on Sunday

Their QF at Scottsdale was FABULOUS. Jan-Mike actually outserved Andy 21 to 11 or something like that. But andy raised his game and outplayed him in the second and third. So yep hopefully this one will be just as good.

I think JMG may have been just a teeny bit more tired for that match that Andy was. They both played two matches that day, but JMG's was later and lasted longer. He played well from what I've heard, until the third set where Andy picked up and JMG got a little tired.

I"ll be at the match on Sunday, so I'll post a report on my site/messageboard. If I have time, I'll try to copy it over here somewhere.

Deboogle!.
03-13-2004, 05:38 AM
Jan-Mike didn't look too tired to me. The only thing I noticed that changed in his game was that his first serve % went down a bit in the third. But it was hard to tell since Andy raised his game so noticeably.

Should be a good match anyway. Both of them ought to be highly motivated!

Funny though that they hadn't played for quite a long time and then suddenly twice in just over a week lol
