Nole is the first seed for the first time in his career. It is the first time that Serbian player is top seed on some ATP event. At the same time Jelena Jankovic is top seed on WTA tournament so it means that we have two top seeds this week.

Good luck Nole, get your place in tennis history becoming winner of the first round robin tournament!

I wish him luck but I wish he wouldn't play those crappy round robin events. I hope and pray that when history looks back upon these days that they aren't held up to have much value.

Are you saying you're pro-round robin?

How do you know it will almost never happen? It's never been DONE yet? I think it is less valuable the second ANYONE loses a match and moves through to the next round. From that second on the tournament is complete bullshit in my eyes. If Novak were #86 instead of #16 right now I think some people would be viewing this differently.

At least the top top players are not signing up for those events so far. The Federers, Nadals, Roddicks, Ljubicics... etc.. I mean.. I love Novak, but he's the #1 seed in the first RR tournament.. that doesn't really bode well for the success of the first trial. I'm sure crowds in Adelaide are thrilled that they get to see Novak 3 times. I mean, it's not exactly what everyone hoped for :p If the other tests have the same type of entry lists.. then... hopefully we'll see the back side of this ludicrous idea sooner rather than later ;)

The entry list is almost exactly the same level as last year's.

So is Vina del Mar's. The players don't seem to be avoiding these tournaments.

The new year starts will a nice doubles win. Okay serving stats for the team:

only 2 bp faced
75% first serves in
80% first serve points won

Even thought it's doubles, that's not bad.

Djokovic Meets Cricket Star Graham Manou

Novak Djokovic and Graham Manou Top seed Novak Djokovic swapped sports as he met with South Australian Redbacks cricket captain Graham Manou to promote the Tennis/Cricket Joint Promotion on New Year’s Day. The joint initiative between the NGAI organisers and the South Australian Cricket Association, will see the Adelaide tournament not play a night session on Monday so that fans can get the best of both worlds by watching world-class tennis in the day and Twenty20 cricket in the evening.

Djokovic, who had heard of the sport, but had never seen the game in action rocked up to the promotion swinging a cricket bat signed by the entire 2004 Australian cricket team. More accustomed to the lightness of his racquets, the Serb was shocked at how heavy the cricket bat actually was, “I can’t believe they are this heavy, it must be hard to hit”.

The talented Serbian then faced a few balls from the South Australian captain, and while the technique was not the greatest, the youngster proved that he may just have the talent to match it with cricket’s best. Djokovic dispatched one delivery back of the head of the bowler, for what would have been a certain boundary (6 runs). However Djokovic learned the subtleties of cricket, when the Redbacks Captain fired down a short-pitched bouncer aimed straight at the Serbian’s head, forcing him to fall to the ground as he tried to duck under the ball. Djokovic was also grateful that they were using tennis balls instead of the rock hard cricket balls that players are normally treated too, “I can’t believe they bowl at 150km/h, it must be very scary” stated Djokovic.

The No.1 Seed will meet Czech Jan Hajek and the winner of the Main Draw Elimination clash between Gilles Muller and Australian wildcard Alun Jones during the round robin stage of the tournament in Adelaide.

Best ranked Serbian tennis player on ATP list, Novak Djokovic has started new tennis season with a great win in his first match withing Group 1 at the "Next Generation Adelaide International", Adelaide. Djokovic defeated Czech Jan Hajek 6:0, 6:1 after only 58 minutes spent on the Centre Court.

Top-seeded Serbian in Adelaide completely controlled the match with nine aces and 82% of realization of his first serve. He made six breaks in the match, while Czech did manage to do same never.

"According to fact that was my first match in 2007, I think I played really good. That's so hot in Adelaide today, the weather conditions are very difficult for playing and I'm very happy I manage to finish this match in less then one hour. The opening match at indoor events are always the hardest, because players try to acclimate on weather atmosphere."

Novak was practicing hardy in last two months and that contributed today's score.

"I had the hardest preparations in my career that lasted five weeks, and I'm pretty tired of them. I believe the trainings will have influence on my playing a few weeks later and that's normal thing, because that was also the preparations for whole season. Regarding this tournament I'm first favourite to win the title and it's expected from me to do very much. In today's match I gave maximum, what was very important for my self-confidence to continue the competition in same rhythm."

His last match within Group 1, which fogether will decide Group winner and the quarterfinalist, Novak will play most likely on Wednesday when he faces local boy, Alun Jones, world number 201, who also upset Jan Hajek in his first match on Monday.

He should have a good run in Adelaide *fingers crossed* and hopefully this boosts his confidence for the AO, I think he may be ready to go the next step and go pretty far in the AO...but this is only the first round. I'll keep my mouth shut to see how the rest of Adelaide pans out.

I agree round robins suck. But Nole feeds on confidence and going far and maybe winning Adelaide (as it is so small) is a sure fire way to send his confidence through the roof (Not that he needs a bigger ego, hes probably full of himself anyway :p )

There is heavy rain in Adelaide so Nole didn`t play his doubles match and doesn`t know who will be his opponent in singles SF (probably his rival will have to play two matches and be tired  ).

I just tried to look it up. Serra is holding up 2 trophies last year. One is a silver bowl/cup the other is a crystal vase-type thing. Maybe one is the "tournament trophy" and the other one he gets to keep. I originally thought that one might be for doubles, but Serra only won the singles last year.

okay so here's a little rundown:

First set: He played solid, not his best but it was enough to take a break. He won most points baselining, which really should be his tactic, keeping Guccione back.

Second set: below average play, tried to finish off quickly rather than prolonging the points, his best points were on the baseline.

Third set: Hes pretty pumped at the moment and hes realised what he needs to do to win. When he won the break he went crazy as did the crowd.

Djokovic edges Guccione for title

7 January - The youngest player in the world’s top 20, Novak Djokovic , won his third career title and ended the winning streak of Australian Chris Guccione at the Next Generation Adelaide International.

Despite being ranked 137 places lower than his opponent, Guccione was not out-classed by any means and, despite losing the first set 6-3, fought back to take the second in a tiebreak 7-6(6).

Djokovic, aged 19, captured two early service breaks in the final set and looked like he would cruise to victory. The Victorian had other ideas, clawing back a break and saving two championship points, before going down 6-4 in the decider.

Supported by an extremely vocal Serbian group in the crowd, Djokovic said it was a difficult match.

“It was really pretty special [win] and one of the reasons is that I didn't feel comfortable on the court today, I was really struggling all the time, because Chris is the kind of player who puts some pressure on me because he's winning his service games pretty easy.

“In the end it was really tight. I was - how we tennis players say - choking in the end. I had three points for a 5-1 lead in the third set and I lost all of them, and in the last game I think he had two or three break points for 5-5 and I have to say I was lucky.

“It's been a great week for me and I just hope that I will recover in the next couple of days next week so I can be ready for the most important tournament, Aussie Open.

“I have to congratulate Chris for a great match, a great performance, a great week, I mean he won against Gasquet which is not easy, and a lot of good players. Always in Australia he's playing well and I hope he gets to top 100 pretty quickly because he deserves that,” he said.

Despite the loss, Guccione had plenty of positives to draw from the week, not least his projected ranking improvement to approximately 110 in the world.

“It was good, we both got off to a slow start. We had a couple of chances and the match just got better and better.”

Guccione had four break point opportunities in the second game of the first set but was unable to convert any of them.

“[I was] a little bit annoyed. He was very nervous at the start, missing some easy balls, but I missed some crucial returns on the break points and that's the way it goes, you can't win every point.”

Tonight Guccione will fly to Sydney, ready to take on that tournament’s top seed – Spaniard Rafael Nadal – in the first round.

“It's a tough draw, I've had a couple of rough ones in Sydney, but I've come through the other ones so hopefully I can do it again. It's a big thing to make a final and beat five top 100 players in a row. Playing Nadal I've got nothing to lose - if I go down I'll at least be playing my game and I'll know I'm hitting the ball well for Aussie Open.”

Australia could still boast a winner on finals day, with South Australian Todd Perry combining with former Wimbledon doubles champion Wesley Moodie to take out the doubles. They defeated Djokovic and Czech Radek Stepanek in a thrilling final which ended 15-13 in the match tiebreak.
