L'EQUIPE

:awww: Paulo

So he really is hurt... This had me worried. I think he had arthroscopic surgeries on both knees so this is the one place I'm seriously concerned. And it sure has him worried.

It's not going to be an ideal birthday if he has to retire against Richard or from the AO...

He maybe :silly: but he isn't going to quit. I'm sure if a part of his body isn't broken then he'll play. As for tonight, I really think he has that knee injury. And yes, I think it's going to get worse :o

I wonder what happened in that 2nd set. I mean, he barely held his own serve, let alone won a point off Richard's! Must have been quite inspiring.
And the 3rd set, if only he could hold that 1st service game... I had a feeling that the match would turn out differently.

Hopefully, he'll be ready to reach the AO quarter final as I predicted

Truc
01-16-2007, 03:50 PM
I'm afraid it might be serious because as I said, he seemed in great pain and he didn't even try to win those 4 points. They often do - and usually retire after one more game anyway -, but he didn't even give it a try although he needed just a few points, it looked like a bad injury to me.
(But you never know, Monfils' ankle injury looked really bad in Madrid too and it wasn't as bad as everybody thought after all.)

He was so mad at the end, smashing all his stuff and his shoes around when he was sitting on his chair and the doctor was taking a look at his ankle. Everybody looked so shocked, the crowd, Verdasco...

I don't know how to record the Eurosport stream, I tried to get the URL with URL Snooper, but it doesn't work. Does anybody know how to record it? The sequence of the injury is not pretty, but he was looking great today, it's too bad you couldn't see that.

From Eurosport:

Oh! And there's a interview with Paulo on FFT site... Well, I could use a translation :o

Most parts are not new, it's about the same as in the Eurosport article.
He heard a crack in his ankle and it was swelling a lot because his ankles were taped.
The x-rays didn't show anything, but he'll have a RMI in France.
He already injured his other ankle in Adelaide last week.
He didn't have problems with the ankles in the past - until Bucharest. The surface in Melbourne doesn't help either.
It's too bad because he's been playing well since the beginning of the year.

And I haven't played tennis since...

I had news from Paulo's mum. She didn't said more than what is said on the net, just that he'll have his exam in France probably at the beginning of next week.
Fingers crossed for Paulo !! :)

From Eurosport:

fini."

How good man! Fernando is a very nice person. I don´t think there are much player who do this in a similar situation. I like the tennis player who had "heart" (like Paulo too)

Yeah he's really a great man !! He seemed so sorry for Paulo, but going to the hospital with him, I've never heard a story like that !! I hope he'll go far in the tournament...

Yeah, it was my ankle too, the right one to be exact. I thought mine was completely healed until I felt a sharp pain when I was running a month ago.
And I haven't played tennis since...

I had to have an injection right after I twisted my ankle. It was such a painful shot :scared:

I hope Paulo's ankle, your ankle and mine ;) are fully recovered real soon

 You had Danai on your avvy!!
Did you get a huge bruise come up as well? :awww: My foot went purple and I couldn't put my shoe on because it was so swollen :crying2:

I did my right one as well, then I finally made my comeback after 2 and a half months, and I played football and did an almost identical thing to my left ankle...luckily not nearly as bad though.

 I did, only for a short period though :p

A short interview of Paulo in L'Équipe today, he doesn't say much, just that he never was in such a pain on a tennis court and that Fernando stayed until 3:30 at the hospital, so Paulo had to tell him to go back to his hotel because he had to play his second round match.

» – J. Re.

This could become a forum for damaged ankles!!! I did exactly the same playing tennis on September 15th and haven't played a match since..I have knocked up now and then in the past few weeks but there is the feeling there all the time that it will pop again. I have to say it was the worst pain I felt so far when it happened. I was on crutches for 2 months and now I have discovered not only was it ligament damage but also cartilage so a possible op for me  I feel bad for my guy Paulo  Get well soon

From John Wertheim - Tennis Mailbag

I see that Paul-Henri Mathieu had to default in his first-round Australian Open match against Fernando Verdasco, even though he was up two sets and up in a tiebreaker four points from victory. What is the fewest points from victory when a player has had to default in a Grand Slam?-- Richard Wolf, New York City

In fairness (PH balance, you could call it),. PH-Mathieu had to be helped from the court on a stretcher. Not as though he could just "suck it up" and play on, hoping to induce a few loose errors to close out the match. I just wrote a column for Tennis about Tom Gorman holding match point in the semis of the 1972 Masters event and retiring. He hurt his back, realized he wouldn't be able to play the following day and figured the crowd and organizers deserved a final. That's one of the great acts of sportsmanship in tennis history as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe Paulo did retire so that Nando could play Murray next round

News from the FFT website:

His injury isn't as bad as it looked first, just a sprain second degree.
He will start training again in a few weeks.

Ome
01-21-2007, 11:12 AM
Thanks for the news, Truc :D

It's good to know that it's not the third degree. There's a whole lot different between the 2nd and 3rd. But as I've learnt, second degree ankle sprain means your ligaments are partially torn... Paulo is so damn lucky if his ligaments are still intacted!

It's going to take so much out of him just to get in shape again, let alone playing as well as he was. He looked physically great against Nando :sobbing: It's not going to be easy getting back to the level he played earlier...

Hope he'll fully recover soon

Lennon :hearts: my 2nd favourite player behind Defoe :inlove:

My dad and brother are both doctors (I let the family down  ), apparently a second degree ankle sprain isn't disasterous. Probably means he's torn his ligaments (but not as badly as he could've done), and that he's got a lot swelling and it's hard to put weight on it.

You can get drunk pretty much everywhere in Bangkok, except in the temples maybe :spit: And believe me... you'll find :drink: even better than Tiger beer

 I've never known the different between all these existing brands... I once tried mixing Tiger, Chang and Singha beer together, followed by Red Bull :rocker2: It got me into medical school. :haha:

Surprise surprise, Adam immediately turned the AO thread into a chat thread!
I had no idea you were playing so well and had considered turning pro, Ome!

Bon anniversaire (avec un peu de retard), here's my birthday present for you, I hope you don't know it yet, it's an exclusive pic of Paulo with his crutches! (from the website of Corinne Dubreuil: http://www.corinnedubreuil.com/GALERIES/AUSTRALIE4/index.html)

;) I wasn't that good -- just took classes. I was just bored with studying so I used tennis as an excuse to get away. And besides, I just hoped to play doubles with Paulo :rolls:

Merci beaucoup, Truc
