Height survey

I did a random sampling of 100 atp players' heights (listed on atptennis.com  ) and came up with the following:

less than 5ft. 10in: 13%

5ft. 11in. - 6ft: 40%

6ft. 1in. - 6ft. 4in: 42%

more than 6ft. 5in: 5%

At 5ft. 8in. I feel like a midget now :o Oh well, I can still see eye to eye with Mamit and look down on Olie :p

Hey, don't worry, I am also 5'8-9, but to be more positive, Bogues was a 5'3 BASKETBALL player, so height doesn't really matter.

Hewitt says he's 5'11 but actually he's 5'10 >> I guess he has a big of a complex about it because most of the top players seem to be closer to 6-foot.!
However Coria is certainly doing well for the short guys (5'8 ?)..
#I'm 5'10 but in my case it wouldn't matter even if I was 6-feet because my reflexes, power & coordination are not up to scratch..

>>Actually I don't think height is such a big issue, especially the greatest players have never been that tall eg. Agassi 5'11, Connors 5'10, McEnroe 5'11...
What's more important is having arms & shoulders that can snap quickly (Tiger Woods & Lleyton Hewitt both look slender but their lean muscles have excellent snapping time for their swing & serve respectively) & also having legs which have a high tolerance for lactic acid!!! (:

Coria, I believe, is listed at 5'9, but I doubt he's actually that tall. 5'8 looks about right. And yes, I've seen him in person on a number of occasions, so I'm not just deciding that by pictures. Might not be right... but I'm 5'8, and he doesn't look to be any taller than I am.

Just my observation, but some of the players have macho attitudes, which, of course, would explain why they exaggerate their heights.
I do agree about Hewitt; he doesn't look like he's 5'11" at all. I remember him standing next to Dave at the Wimbledon final in 2002, and Dave was a head taller than him. So, I'm like, 5'11"? That's an awfully short 5'11"....

And I think David is closer to 6' than 5'11".

People used to pick on Ferrero for his height, because he looks smaller than he is since he's so slight. But I'm pretty sure that 6' is accurate. He's taller than Agassi, that much is evident from pictures. That, and having stood infront of him once, he's certainly taller than 5'10, which is what some people insist he is.

I found that looking at the group pics (without the hats) from TMC last November gave a good idea of relative heights. All those over six feet are sitting down, but the smaller guys are standing at the back.

Though I have to say that at my height (less than 5 ft 2), even Coria looks tall ;)

I didn't realise I wasnt only one who didnt think hewitt was 5ft 11 lol

Henman I believe is listed 6ft 1 but seems much taller when you actually see him for real.

there was a myth going wrong in the late nineties that you had to be 6ft 2 and above to win on grass thesedays but grosjean won nottingham at 5ft8 or 9...hewitt at 5ft 10ish and federer is no skyscraper.

Obviouslly a serving advantage being 6ft 4 as you can find more angles but I dont think we are heading for a next generation of karlovics' there will still be a lot of under six footers coming through.

All of the taller players who had the big serves-Krajicek and Ivanisevic, for example-have battled a lot of injury problems. As a result, Krajicek is no longer playing, and I fear if Ivanisevic has another injury crisis, he may retire as well.

It's so funny.... nearly every man I know who is really under 6 ft, adds at least one inch to their height. Like I can't tell how tall they are by standing next to them.

Women are wierd about height too. Particularly little ones are sure to tell you every quarter inch of their height. As in ... I'm 5 foot one and a quarter inch. Okey dokey. Have fun with that quarter inch.

At one time it was thought that 5 10 or 5-11 was the perfect height for a tennis player. conventional wisdom was that someone who was over 6 foot couldn't move well and couldn't get down for the low balls. Oh well. Times change. :)

Chang was another guy who told "white lies" about his height>> he claimed to be 5'9 but it was fairly obvious that he was 5'8 at best!
-->Grosjean claims to be 5'9 but I reckon he's only 5'8 too.
* This cheating thing with height applies to nearly all professional men in sports; because for guys this is the major issue of insecurity(other than losing our hair).
#In the same way women are rarely 100% truthful when it comes to questions about their weight. Or if you ask a woman over +40years the age question they're likely to give you dirty looks.

*#* I used to think I was too short to be a sportsman, actually I wanted to be a pro golfer, but then I realised my average talent & lack of singlemindedness were the real chinks in my armour.
PS, Yesterday Craig Parry won a $1million event on the US PGA tour but that little Aussie battler is only 5'5 (also he lies & says 5'6..!).

I believe 511 or more or less 1,80 mts is the ideal height for tennis too.
I mean, for a baseliner, a serve and volleyer should be a couple of inches taller, to get a good serve .

BTW, did you know Borg Connors and Vilas were all 1,75, Connors probably even shorter?

I think so, too.
Really, the ATP needs to check the heights of some of these players each year-especially those 21 and younger. Their bodies are still maturing, and someone who was 5'9" in 2003, may have picked up 4 inches in height and now be 6'1". They can't still be listed at 5'9". I do believe that Mario Ancic did pick up an inch or two since Wimby 2002.

What what I've heard, the ATP and WTA simply take the figures that the players give them, and don't independently confirm them. So there are lots of "drivers license" weights and heights out there.

i think y'all need to read this article. it was written in 2002 when Hewitt was dominating the tour but it is still relevant IMO.
TC

Short of Expectations

Last week, we looked at the relationship between height and success on the WTA Tour, concluding that height does not assure success. At the time, it didn't occur to us to test the men also. After all, the top man in the world, Lleyton Hewitt, is not particularly tall, and we could name several other successful players (e.g. Sebastien Grosjean) who are even less stocked in the Vertical Department.

The reason seems fairly clear, too: Short women have trouble because their serves are weak, and women's returns are big. Even the shortest men, such as Hewitt, have bigger serves than a Martina Hingis or an Amanda Coetzer, so they aren't at such a disadvantage.

But such things are best tested. Conventional wisdom used to have it that height wasn't a big advantage in women's tennis, because it meant you were slower. The Williams Sisters blew away that assumption. So maybe the rules have changed for the men, and we didn't notice. There's no way to tell unless we test it. We'll do the same thing with the men as we did with the women: Take the 2001 year-end top fifty, and compare heights and success rates.

This isn't really as straightforward as it is for the women, because the men insist on mis-measuring heights -- converting to inches and then back into meters. So men's heights are not as precise as women's. (We can't verify their accuracy; we do suspect that some of the women lie about their height.) But, hey, it's only a thought-experiment....

Here, then, is the data: We'll list the top 50 men, in descending order of height, with their 2001 year-end entry rankings, their heights in inches (since that's the measure the ATP uses; with apologies to all non-Americans and people with scientific training), their 2001 ATP wins (does not include Challengers) and losses, and winning percentage.

We note with some interest that the range in height among the men is rather less than the women: The tallest man is 9 inches, or 23 centimeters, taller than the shortest man, a difference of 13%; the tallest women, however, were 35 centimeters, or fourteen inches, taller than the shortest woman, a difference of 22%. Whatever that means.

We also note that every Top Fifty man had at least an even winning percentage, something not true of the women. (This might be a sign of greater depth among the men, but this is by no means certain. The men have more events, and that makes more wins "available" to distribute among top players. The one thing that is clear is that, as in the heights, the women have more "spread": There were six women with winning percentages of 80% or greater, but the only man to manage that was Hewitt.)

Again, let's go from the numbers to a graph: Winning percentage versus height:

This graph is fascinating in that it is so unlike the women's graph (which, you may recall, had a sort of triangular shape with an extended top line, sort of like this:

*
*
***
*****

The men's graph looks almost as if there are two separate functions, one for the really top players and one for players lower down, with a big gap between them. On this graph, it would appear literally possible to "take it to another level."

But that is pure speculation. The fact is that the best player (Hewitt) is of slightly below average height, and the two worst (Hrbaty and Kiefer) are both right smack in the middle in height.

So what about correlation. Is there a correlation between height and winning percentage?

The answer is an unequivocal no. For the women, there was a hint of correlation -- a correlation coefficient of .24 (with 0 meaning no correlation and 1 meaning perfect correspondence), just enough that it might mean something.

The correlation for the men was .04. Given the size of the sample, that's less than the margin of error in the height measurements. It is safe to say that, for the men, height simply does not relate to success.

These are among the athletes that give me inspiration:
Spud Webb
Olivier Rochus
Earl Boykins

What do they have in common? All three athletes are 5 feet and 5 inches tall.
And so am I.

5'4" for a girl is fine, but 5'5" for a guy is not so great.

It's funny how they have some of the heights, it's usually when taken when they first come onto the tour. I have a few pics with Rosset and they say he is 2,01m and the top of my head is at his shoulders.

Rochus looked really short when they played at USO
