I couldn't see a thread for him here apart from the BCR Open photos, so I decided to start one. I realise he doesn't have many fans, but I like him :)

Anyway, he got a WC into the Spanish Masters this weekend (it was between him and Feli) so he'll get to play in Granada. Good luck to him...he's a sweet guy :)

He won his first title!!! Montanes def. Darcis 1:6 7:5 6:3 :woohoo:

i watched him play all week in amersfoort, and he played very good..I can say that i am quite a fan now that i have finally see him play in person :D

First set he played really bad, after 12 minutes he was already 5:0 down. After that he immediately broke in the second set to 4:1, then got broken back to 5:5 and eventually claimed the set 7:5. In the final set Darcis lost his confidence and Albert won!!
He was really sweet when i met him.. After the match he gave autographs to lots of children and posed for photos and stuff.

Here is a picture of him with the trophy.
I expect them to post a summary of the match here tomorrow or something: http://www.dutchopentennis.nl/samenvattingen_2008.php

After a not surprising Australian season in which Albert went 0-3, he's now on his favorite dirt for the SA swing.

Unfortunately at Vina, Albert lost to Cuevas after having a bye. Made the semis of doubles though, that's not too bad.
Next up is Costa do Sauipe, where Albert again is the #3 seed but unfortunately drew Ferrero first round. That being said, Ferrero is outside of the top 100 and not playing well, so Albert definitely has a chance.
Also, Albert reached a career high of 40 in the world last week :worship:
A strong showing on this SA swing could have his ranking really looking good.
Good luck Albert :)

Albert had a dissapointing year in the SA clay court swing, losing in the 1st round of all 4 tourneys he played in . If he had fulfilled his seeding he would be number 26 at the moment. He played well in IW and Miami beating Florent Serra 6-3 6-0 and Stefan Koubek 6-4 7-6. He lost to Murray and Phau in the 2nd round of both. He played really well against Murray. He couldn't move well in the Phau match, but credit to Phau for playing well. He had to retire trailing 4-6 0-2 to the German.

Now he's back on clay and has defeated Reda el Amrani and Santiago Ventura. He will face Frederico Gil in the QFs. If you ask me he has a very good chance of winning this title if he plays his best. He is a top 15 clay courter at his best. Vamos Albert!!!! :D

ATP World Tour No. 53 Albert Montanes won his second ATP World Tour title of the season after edging third seed Juan Monaco 7-6(2), 7-6(6) Sunday in the final of the BCR Open Romania, an ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tennis tournament in Bucharest.

Montanes is the third Spanish player this season, together with Rafael Nadal (five titles) and Tommy Robredo (two titles), to win at least two ATP World Tour titles. He received 250 South African Airways 2009 ATP Ranking points and €71,700, while runner-up Monaco earned 150 Ranking points and €37,700 in prize money.

The 28-year-old Montanes also triumphed on clay at the Estoril Open in May, defeating World No. 8 Gilles Simon in the quarter-finals before saving two match points to beat No. 16 James Blake in the title match.

Barcelona-resident Montanes is the first Spaniard to win the BCR Open Romania title since David Sanchez lifted the trophy in 2003. Montanes himself had nearly claimed the title two years earlier, when he finished runner-up to Younes El Aynaoui on his tournament debut.

In their second ATP World Tour meeting, neither player was able to establish a break though in the first set. In the deciding tie-break it was Montanes who took the initiative, racing into a 5-1 lead before closing out the one-set lead 7-2.

World No. 37 Monaco hit back immediately, breaking to love early in the second set to open up a 3-0 lead. The Argentine had multiple set point opportunities in the eighth and 12th games to level the match, but could not convert as Montanes fought back to force a second tie-break.

In a closer tie-break, mini-breaks were exchanged early before Monaco created set point on his own serve at 6-5. Montanes was quick to level though and won the final two points of the match to prevail after two hours and 10 minutes. He had also defeated Monaco in straight sets on clay at the Movistar Open in 2006.

“I’m very happy with how the whole week has gone and I’m very happy as well to win the title here," said Montanes. "I was a bit lucky when I saved all those set points with 15-40 twice on my serve. That was a very important moment, I’m happy and lucky that I saved them."

Montanes improved to a 3-4 mark in ATP World Tour finals, with all of his final appearances coming on clay. The right-hander won his maiden ATP World Tour title at Amersfoort in 2008, defeating Steve Darcis in the final. He had finished runner-up in his first four ATP World Tour finals.

Monaco, who leads the ATP World Tour with 29 match wins on clay this season, was bidding to win his first title of the year. Earlier in the season he finished runner-up on clay at the Copa Telmex in Buenos Aires (l. to Robredo) and the Catella Swedish Open in Bastad (l. to Soderling).

“I’m a little bit disappointed but sport is like this. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose," lamented Monaco. "I have to keep working very hard to get better moments. That moment in the match when I almost won the second set, I need more focus and more rhythm on those points. I think I need to be more focused if I want to improve my tennis and win tournaments like this."

Since winning his first three ATP World Tour titles in 2007, the 25-year-old Monaco has lost five straight finals; he also finished runner-up at the Interwetten Austrian Open when it was held in Poertschach (l. to Davydenko) and the Movistar Open in Vina del Mar (W/O vs. Gonzalez) both last season. The Tandil native dropped to a 3-6 mark in ATP World Tour finals.

He played solid in the match and, although he got nervous in the end, he stayed mentally strong and composed enough to win the match in the end. He plays the home crowd guy Frederico Gil tomorrow for his second straight title in Estoril.

Congrats Albert on the win and great week, hopefully you cap it off in style with a tournament victory, good luck!

Not a Federer fan I see, I like Roger, but I was rooting for Albert to win yesterday because I knew he could and that it would be the biggest opportunity for his best ever win. Albert is a veteran 29 year old Spaniard clay courter who is playing the best tennis of his life having been in the top 100 now going on a decade. Albert isn't really considered one of the attractive Spaniards but I don't know your tastes :p If you want to know more about Albert, go on his ATP profile page, and come through this thread so you can see updates on how his season is progressing ;)

Albert did it!!!!!!!!!! He defeated the local boy Gil 6-2 6-7 (4) 7-5 to win Estoril for the second straight season! The match was dramatic, intense, emotional and full of pressure and nerves. Albert was serving for the match at 5-3 in the second set and lost his serve. He then had an opportunity on Gil's service game and didn't take advantage. In the tiebreak, Gil played great tennis to send it to the third set. Gil got up 2 breaks of serve in the 3rd set playing amazing while Albert was a little deflated, but Albert fought back, and broke Gil 3 times in the 3rd set, including the final game, to get the victory in 2 hours and 33 minutes! Congratulations Albert on his 4th career title. An amazing guy, playing the best tennis of his career at 29. Great job, champ :yeah: :worship:

Albert is now moving on to Madrid to play in front of the Spanish crowd this upcoming week. Here is his section of the draw:

Youzhny - Lacko
Gulbis - Montanes
Kubot - F. Lopez
Roddick v Bye

Not a good draw at all for Albert in Madrid, not likely for him to be able to carry his form from Estoril to a good performance in Spain. Hopefully he's not too tired, and maybe just maybe he can pull of a surprise vs. Gulbis like he did with Roger.

Albert is also playing doubles with Garcia-Lopez and they are playing Brustrom/Rojer in R1, and if they win they will play Dlouhy/Paes in R2.

Good luck in singles and doubles in Madrid, Albert!

Because he's not "hot" :ras:

Now seriously, I think he'd need a thread with more posts and pages. He deserves it tennis-wise, but if there's not enough fanbase, the admins will not create him a subforum (though I don't know how GGL has one)

btw, now that he's reached his career-high rank at #24, we can remember Albert's five ATP titles :D

A Few Words For Montanes
July 20, 2010

He may not have the physique of Rafael Nadal, or the sex appeal of Fernando Verdasco, but Spaniard Albert Montanes continues to turn heads on the ATP World Tour.

Capturing his second title of the season on Sunday, the 29-year-old from Barcelona proved that his success on the second tier of the circuit was no fluke.

Defeating Roger Federer in Estoril earlier this year for his fourth career title, Montanes benefited from an ankle injury to Gael Monfils in Stuttgart over the weekend for career title No. 5. Using his deceptively powerful one-handed backhand, Montanes’ off the apex hit serve is always difficult to read.

In a day and age where Tour success in Spain has hit legendary proportions, Montanes has proved that just because he’s entering the twilight of his career, there’s no reason to slow down.

Picking up 80 percent of his Tour hardware after the age of 28, Montanes’ fit and efficient game has taken him to a career high rank of No. 24 this week. Reaching the third-round of every Major thus far in 2010, Montanes may not push for his maiden Grand Slam title anytime soon, but he’s certainly one to watch when the draws are released.

There’s always been an endearing quality about players who enjoy maximizing their talents. It’s not so much about winning Wimbledon or topping the rankings as the longest standing No. 1—it’s more about the experience of respecting their profession and understanding that their day job is to travel and rip a forehand.

With all of the hoop la that’s surrounded the Dennis Rodmans and Cristiano Ronaldos of the world, Montanes has upheld and surpassed what a role model in sports should be: A hard-working, dedicated athlete, who wakes up every morning with the sole purpose of improving.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Montanes looks forward to tournaments such as Estoril, Umag, and Bucharest. The fields are usually not top heavy, and Montanes can let his shots fly with a greater degree of confidence. It’s not that Montanes doesn’t want to be challenged by the towering fields in New York or Australia—more than anything, the Barcelona native has accepted that his time to shine will likely come at 250 point events.

That to me is a wonderful quality for a Tour player to have. Let’s be honest here, how many players who are slogging it out in the Futures and Challengers events wouldn’t sign up for a chance to hold a top 25 ranking, and two Tour titles on the year?

You probably wouldn’t have Nadal or Novak Djokovic stand in that line, but there’s no doubt that the Taylor Dents and Janko Tipsarevics on Tour would be more than adamant on filling that position.

Saluting Montanes for his efforts, it’s once again a pleasure to witness a player who is not looking for billboard status, but merely to enjoy the wonderful experience of traveling the globe and telling a ball person that he needs a towel.

There may only be one Rafael Nadal, but the sport in general would greatly benefit with more Albert Montanes’ around.

Well, he's skipping a mandatory event

The Masters 1000 includes tournaments at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome, Madrid, Toronto/Montreal, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris. The end-of-year event, the Tour Finals, moved to London. Hamburg has been displaced by the new clay court event at Madrid, which is a new combined men's and women's tournament. From 2011, Rome and Cincinnati will also be combined tournaments. Severe sanctions will be placed on top players skipping the Masters 1000 series events, unless medical proof is presented.

After the US Open loss to Kukushkin, Albert played in five events, his best result being a SF in the Szczecin challenger in Poland as well as avenging his US Open loss to Kukushkin in Shanghai, winning a final set tiebreaker in the first round. He finished 2011 #53 in the world, the first time he finished out of the top 50 since 2006.

Unfortunately, 2012 hasn't gone much better for Albert, as he has a 2-6 record so far on the season and has suffered with a back injury. Albert has not played since retiring from both Buenos Aires and Acapulco with back problems and withdrew from both Indian Wells and Miami with the issue. His next scheduled event is Casablanca, the week before next. European clay is where Albert always has his best results and he's defending a SF at the event, so hopefully this break from competitive matches will have helped Albert recuperate from his injuries and he will be able to play at the best of his abilities and without pain on the court.
