Agassi may not play a claycourt event before Roland Garros

I find it interesting that Andre won't be playing any claycourt events before the French Open this year. He won't even play the event in Houston. Poor Jim McIngvale is probably crying.

Anway, I wonder if Andre will be able to make it to the later rounds there if he does't play a single match between Miami and the French Open.

WOW... I'm shocked that he's not playing Houston.

Andre's clearly resting himself for the more important tournaments. But I'm surprised he won't even play any of the clay TMSs.

I was actually pretty surprised he pulled out of Scottsdale, where he's usually done quite well, won 4 times, and says it's one of his favorite tourneys to play.

I think we're seeing the downswing of Andre :(

I don't like Jim McIngvale. He looked like that he had a stomachache when Federer defeat Agassi in Masters Cup final last year.
Just a nationalist.

Agassi definitely cut down a lot on his regular schedule... I hope he'll find a way to be ready for RG:)!

agassi is a man with a full hand of cards and no expression right now, nobody knows what hes thinking but somewhere in his head he wants a crack at one last slam this year.

You don't understand pal. Jim was given Roger these odd looks and altogether not being such a good loser. He spent so long interviewing Andre, and took half that long with Roger. He openly cheered on Andre, something that a tournament director shouldn't do, and allowed ballkids to run up to Agassi and ask for his autograph, but not Roger's. He even wore a shirt blatantly showing the American flag, showing he has no interest in players from any other nationality. Altogether, he did not stay OPENLY unbiased as a tournament director should, and then antagonized Roger.

This comment shows your own ignorance. Mattress Mack ONLY owns shirts with the US flag on it.

and for the last time, Mack is not the tournament director, he is the tournament PROMOTER/chair. The tournament director is someone else. Not that this excuses/justifies Mack's behavior, but if you're going to continue to harp on this, at least get the facts right.

Agassi will always be a strong contender. He is not the player who needs weeks of preparation, in my opinion. But he won't claim the title. He's old, and you can see he's taking it more slowly and rightfully so.

Bunk, I believe this is an international event which is aired to worldwide audiences...you certainly don't expect anybody outside of US or Houston know what sort of shirts Jim whoever owns do you? And how does this show any ignorance of one?

Even as a tournament PROMOTER, he has done nothing to promote anything as I can see except probably his very famous shirts (now we all know about that and certainlly will be more forgiving towards that ;) and his close relationships with Andre and Steff. Domino did get half of his sentence about this guy right though : "showing he has no interest in players from any other nationality"

Bunk is the defender of Jim McIngvale, but this argument has been done before and as I have said and most people have figured out it's an International Event and the US shouldn't be given any more of these until they can actually realise the USA is not the world.

Back to the topic of Agassi not playing before RG. He could always get a wildcard into any of the pre-events or maybe he is a bit scared that is more vulnerable on clay now than before.

Hopefully for once he could get something resembling a tough draw which hasn't happened to him for a while at RG.

All political considerations aside, the flag shirts are just really ugly. The fashion police need to confiscate them, and soon. There must be a clause in the Patriot Act which outlaws displaying the flag on a guy who looks like that.

Andre...

I honestly hope to see him winning another major before going to retirement. He does look frustrated losing to fellow countrymen young gun to me the last time I saw him. I hope he's still as determined to win as he had been.

MisterQ, they have problems passing wind after a night on the habanero chilli, how could they pass such a logical law as you have out forward.

Isy, I don't care about Agassi and whether he wins another Slam, his best chance is at the US Open, not RG and he knows that.

I bet he will still get an easy draw in spite of not playing any lead in tournaments.

LOL

Right. Because a millionaire can really use "sorry, US flag shirts are all I've got!" as an excuse.

agassi obviously realises he has next to no chance at the French and is avoiding the gruelling clay season to be in better shape for the rest of the year.
my guess is that he is only going to RG to say goodbye to his fans, as i have said before i think he will retire after this year

that moron jim doesn't deserve to be discussed on here as many times as he has

he'll soon change his mind when he loses in 2nd rd of both IW and Miami

he wont play Monte Carlo anyway.
it was either Rome or nothing.
as Hamburg is the week after and he cant take playing 2 tourns in 2 weeks :o

It's not wise IMO. I can understand he wants to make his mark in the majors this year, but I believe he can't do it without playing tourneys before RG. I know he's ready and fit when he has to, but he can't do it on fitness and experience alone.

I don't really care cause he's not a fave of mine, but still ;)

It worked pretty well for him at TMC last year. He didn't play from the USO til TMC and made it to the final... not that I think he'll go win RG, and I agree he should play at least one of the clay TMS tourneys, but I think he is still capable of doing well at RG if he doesn't.

Claycourt tennis is tougher so it can't be compared with TMC I think.

Deboogle!.
03-08-2004, 03:14 PM
Right... it would make even more sense for him to not play anything except for RG since it's so tough on the body so that he can be 100% there...

I hope Andre will choose to play at least one of the Masters Series events on clay. Rome might be good -- he seems to like that one, and it would give him some time off afterwards to get rested for RG.

He hasn't played in Monte Carlo or Hamburg recently, and I'm sure they would like to see him play there too. Plus those are the two TMS he hasn't won yet.

Someone already mentioned that Andre adjusts very quickly to new surfaces.

He won Wimbledon 1992 without playing between RG and Wimby.

He won RG1999 with only a few clay matches in the previous month.

But now he is older, and it's a little harder to rely on talent.

It was disgraceful, so no, some of us are not "over it", especially not when you consider the fact that such bull shit is likely to happen again.

Just because you desire to have all of Jim's babies and think that the Houstons MC is the greatest thing since sliced bread, does not mean that the rest of us are not going to talk about it.

So really... piss off. You're the one who needs to "let it go"

um what? You think I like Mattress Mack? No, he's obnoxious and annoying, and therefore I don't let him get to me, I just ignore him. I can't watch a tv show without about 10 of his obnoxious commercials being shown on tv - and yes he wears the stupid flag shirts in all of them and has that same screechy voice as from the TMC commercials and yes I mute the TV when he comes on.

And when did I say that the TMC was great? I didn't. I said everyone was right, what he did was disgraceful and stupid and ignorant and all the other stuff. It just seems silly to keep drudging it up. It's over, he apologized, we discussed it to death, etc. etc. The man will have a chance to redeem himself again in April and even moreso at the TMC again in November, for those who are willing to give him a second chance. And he HAS done a lot of wonderful things for this city and regardless of his extreme patriotism, he is a good person who does good things and many Houstonians are better off because his philantropy. So no, I can't stand the guy and I'd never go there to buy a bed, but I don't think he's Satan's spawn either because of one really stupid thing he did.

Really Becca, if you're going to insult me you could at least get it right.

Agassi doesn't have the balls to come back to Hamburg after he put in a pathetic effort against Costa and rightfully got booed.

The classy Agassi come out and said "what are you going to do stab me". He won't go to Monte Carlo why would he? He already lives in a tacky place full of casinos, except in the desert.

I think he knows that he has no chance on clay and just wants to say farewell to Paris, before moving on to the U.S. hardcourt season where he should be rested and one of the main Open contenders.
