I have heard that they will play in Krefeld in the Koenigpalast. Its an Icehockeystadium with a capacity of 7500 seats. I dont know on which surface they are going to play. Its an inoffical news. Nicolas Kiefer said it in an interview with the german newspaper "Die Welt".

Is that a photoshop or was Kiefer really in a Bloomberg show?

Krefeld? The atmosphere probably won't be as great as in Halle last year (at least at the beginning), but maybe the team will make up for it by doing the nearly impossible. There shouldn't be too many free seats since the Krefeld stadion will only have 4.600 seats (Halle had more than 11.000 IIRC).

With Germany playing on HC, we really need Kiefer. If Kiefer isn't ready, then possibly Becker. Mayer would have been a good option on clay. Maybe Waske will get us one point in the doubles. :D Oh well, we'll see how they'll fare in the Aussie Open.

croat123

it a slow hardcourt

the same mistake the americans made in l.a.

clay or even grass, cause ljubo hates grass, were germany's best options by far (although we would have still been the favorites)

Clay was not really an option if you ask me. I don't see any German player defeating Ancic on clay and Ljubo's last RG was not bad...

in the optimum case Haas could win both his matches and we will take the doubles, but that's rather illusion

however, as I don't like Haas that much, I will cheer for Croatia anyway, as long as there will not be Greul and Becker playing ;)

HC is the best surface for Haas and Kiefer to beat Ancic and the best surface for Haas to beat Ljubicic. Grass would be only the best surface for Kiefer to beat Ljubicic.

JMG
12-13-2006, 02:01 PM
I still hope that Waske won't be able to play, so that there would be a chance for Petzschner to get nominated. The best would be Haas, Kiefer, Kas, Petzschner. A third singles player isn't necessary, because Kohlschreiber, Becker etc would lose anyway, while Kas/Petzschner could upset Ancic/Ljubicic and Haas wouldn't be needed for doubles.

Deathless Mortal
12-13-2006, 02:53 PM
Ancic/Ljubicic beat Bryan bros, so I think Kas/Petzschner have not much chances to beat them.
It will still be the beginning of season, surprises are possible, but I think it's not going to happen.
Ljubicic can beat both Kiefer and Haas, and Ancic can beat at least one of them. I'll be happy with 3-2 victory.

It's old news, I know, but I didn't see it in the thread, it might be Haas' last DC tie:Haas' Davis Cup Departure Coincides With Becker's Arrival

Tommy Haas will board a flight for Germany on Saturday to begin the final installment of his Davis Cup journey. Germany hosts 2005 Davis Cup champion Croatia in next weekend's opening-round tie on a Rebound Ace court in Krefeld.

Two months shy of his 29th birthday, Haas views this as his final season of Davis Cup competition.

"I’m really looking forward to it actually," Haas said today after suffering a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, setback in the Delray Beach quarterfinals. "I hope I can rest up and get ready for it. Who knows? It might be my last time. If we don’t win, I’m probably going to stop playing Davis Cup for Germany."

The three-time Australian Open semifinalist has been a passionate Davis Cup participant for much of his career yet Haas' results have not matched his devotion to Davis Cup in recent years. Haas has suffered three straight Davis Cup losses and his team has not fared much better. Germany has not advanced beyond the first round of the World Group since 2000 when Haas scored singles victories over Jon Van Lottum and Sjeng Schalken to power Germany to a 4-1 opening-round victory over The Netherlands. The Germans lost to Australia, 3-2, in the 2000 quarterfinals.

"I’m not the youngest anymore. I’ve dedicated my whole career pretty much to Davis Cup," said Haas, who has informed the German Tennis Federation of his plans. "If you don’t have that much success, or almost no success at all, in something you put so much effort into for so many years, you have to be able to let it go and let the younger generation take it to another level."

Haas' Davis Cup departure coincides with Benjamin Becker's arrival.

The ninth-ranked Haas, who owns a 19-7 career Davis Cup record, and teammate Becker, who will make his Davis Cup debut next weekend, will be the singles starters against Croatia's two top 10 singles players Ivan Ljubicic and Mario Ancic.

"With Benjamin Becker, who has an aggressive style of game, I think he would play Ljubicic first if nobody gets injured until then," Haas said. "I'd be playing against Ancic and he would play against Ljubicic. I think he has a good game to beat him. If we give our best, I think we have a good chance."

Becker sent Andre Agassi into retirement with a third-round victory at the 2006 U.S. Open and Haas does not belief the pressure of Davis Cup play will provoke Becker into flushing his nerve away.

" I don’t think [Becker is] some guy who’s going to be shy about it," Haas said. "I think he’s actually looking forward to the challenge, unlike some other players who have been really sitting on a toilet for 45 minutes, scared about it."

Haas has split two meetings with the 10th-ranke Ancic and is 2-2 lifetime against the eighth-ranked Ljubicic; he believes the German crowd could play a tie breaking presence in next weekend's match up.

"For me, it’s going to be a big test. I’m going to try to get two singles points, and if we win as a team, continue on through the year," Haas said. "It’s a tough opponent, but we play at home, so we’ll have the crowd on our side. Hopefully through the Australian Open and good press in Germany we will get a good crowd going. I think there’s about five-and-a-half or 6,000 people who can fit in a nice arena. If we get the crowd behind us, and we play well, I think we have a pretty good chance."

Tommy Haas could always beat Ivan Ljubicic when he's playing well, and Mario Ancic and Benjamin Becker seem pretty equal to me (even though Ancic is obviously the more experienced of the two.) But Mario didn't play a match since the AO.

Benjamin had a close match with Ivan last year, I think he lost 6/7 6/7.
And Tommy has the better game than Mario.

Germany should have good chances to win the Doubles Rubber as well, I think it doesn't look that bad for the Germans at all.

From german news agency dpa :
"Die Meldung des Internet-Portals www.Daviscup.com, wo er mit den Worten zitiert wird, dass die Partie in Krefeld möglicherweise sein letzter Daviscup-Auftritt sein könnte, dementierte Haas energisch: „Ich habe gesagt, dass ich natürlich nicht mehr der Jüngste bin und allmählich auch mal neue Namen nachrücken müssen, aber das sollte keinesfalls ein angekündigter Rücktritt sein.“

Haas says he will probabky keep playing DC: "All I said was that I'm not the youngest any more and that some new names should join the CD tean at some time. But I did absolutely not announce my retirement from the DC team."

Well, I didn't read the whole article you're talking about, but he doesn't say either he'll *probably* keep playing DC in the little bits you quote, just that he never announced his retirement (it was indeed just a "might" - but there really is a bunch of quotes of him hinting at that eventuality in the other article, I don't know if it's entirely made up.)

Germany should have good chances to win the Doubles Rubber as well, I think it doesn't look that bad for the Germans at all.

they have 1% chance of winning doubles...Ivan and Mario have never lost a doubles rubber in DC

and Haas cant touch Ljubo, when Ljubo is playing well.

from daviscup.com

Like Roddick, Tommy Haas made the last four in Melbourne, only to be swept aside by Gonzalez. With Nicolas Kiefer still injured, Germany’s captain Patrik Kühnen will be relying heavily on his No.1 Haas at home to the former champions Croatia in Krefeld. There was a time when a certain B Becker lit up the Davis Cup. But 19 years after Boris led Germany to its first title triumph, Benjamin Becker (no relation) is due to make his debut for the hosts.

Although Ivan Ljubicic lost early in Melbourne, he and Mario Ancic, backed up by Ivo Karlovic, are determined to regain the title they won two years ago. “Yes, that's a big goal,” said Ancic. “Playing for Croatia and trying to win a Davis Cup again would be a great achievement. We have a tough first round playing Germany away, so we’re looking forward to the start of that campaign and we’ll try to repeat 2005.”

Hopefully Haas and Becker will have a good day and then it should be a very interesting encounter. Everything is possible for the German team - from a straight loss to a 3:2 victory.

Becker will play. ;)

It will be interesting to see how he handles the situation of playing his first DC match. But he has proven that he isn't afraid of big names and therefore I hope he will have a good debut.

from daviscup.com

Ivan Ljubicic is likely to be more than usually fired up this weekend. It’s hard for a patriot from a fiercely patriotic nation to say he won’t be playing for his country, so it’s fair to assume that the 27-year-old Croatian hero doesn’t want his Davis Cup career to end this weekend in a snowy Krefeld.

Ljubicic told Croatia’s journalists back in November that the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas was taking too much out of him, and as he wanted to extend his top-level career as long as possible, 2007 would be his final year. Like others before him, he may well find he has more to lose by giving up tennis’s top team competition than to gain, but only time will tell. What seems certain is that he would clearly like to go out on the high of a second title after the one he won with Mario Ancic in 2005.

Once again, the two men will shoulder all Croatia’s responsibility in Krefeld this weekend. The draw for the tie reads:

Tommy Haas (GER) v Mario Ancic (CRO)
Benjamin Becker (GER) v Ivan Ljubicic (CRO)
Michael Kohlmann/Alexander Waske (GER) v Mario Ancic/Ivan Ljubicic (CRO)
Tommy Haas (GER) v Ivan Ljubicic (CRO)
Benjamin Becker (GER) v Mario Ancic (CRO)

While Croatia go into the weekend as slight favourites, there is a quiet confidence in the German camp. Tommy Haas comes to Krefeld – a district on the western outskirts of Dusseldorf – having reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, and the captain Patrik Kuhnen gives a Davis Cup debut to Benjamin Becker, whose nerve under pressure has impressed many in his rise up the rankings over the past eight months.

Haas sets record straight

Haas himself was quoted in one German newspaper as saying this would be his last year playing Davis Cup. The top-ranked German was keen to set the record straight, pointing out that he had merely expressed his wish for more Germans to come through to challenge him for his No. 1 position, and that if that happened, he would be happy to find this was his last year in the competition. But he made it clear he has no plans to give up the team event.

Haas clearly wanted to open against the Croatian No. 2, Ancic, who was beaten by Andy Roddick in five big-hitting sets in the Australian Open fourth round. Ancic declined to play a tour event last week, which Ljubicic said was due to a wish to make the most of Croatia’s chances of a second Davis Cup title this year. The pressure will clearly be on Haas, as it would be hard to see Germany picking up three of the remaining four points if Ancic won the opener, but if the German does prevail, it will allow Becker to come at Ljubicic with no pressure.

Becker, who says he laughs at suggestions that his surname heaps extra pressure on him, has a steadiness in his game that could trouble Ljubicic, who won in Doha and was a finalist in Zagreb last week but hasn’t impressed with his form the way he did early in 2005 and 2006.

Ancic and Ljubicic look to extend unbeaten record

The doubles could be a high-quality contest, as Germany’s pair of Kohlmann and Waske won the title in Zagreb last Sunday, their second tour title and third final together. Yet they are up against the Olympic bronze medallists who have never lost a Davis Cup doubles, and inflicted the only defeat in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas on the world’s top pair, Bob and Mike Bryan.

The winners here will play either Belgium or Australia, who are playing just a few kilometres from Krefeld across the border in the eastern Belgian city of Liege.

Haas had good DC results until 2004. But he lost many important matches after his comeback...that's true.

Germany needs more team spirit! One of their biggest problem.

I Agree, Haas should watch some DC matches from Nicolas Massu, Germany has a great team, but they play like girls, sorry but that's the true, that's why Croatia is gonna win (in germany, again, and again).

Becker, Stich.. good old times.
