03-06-2004, 09:47 PM
Well Neely, if you don't like a player then I suppose their "fighting spirit" is going to be infuriating rather than uplifting - look at Roddick's semi against Nalbandian at the US Open last year, where his great fighting spirit wasn't tremendously appreciated by me at the time. Or in TBE's case, Monte Carlo 2002 where Henman came back from Coria serving for the match, won and went on to reach the semis - I'm sure he didn't applaud Henman's fighting spirit much...

Tricky_Forehand
03-06-2004, 09:48 PM

Sjengster? Maybe I misunderstand your post but the last time Nicolas & Vince played was in the QFs at LA. Nicolas won that match in 3 sets. I know that because I was there for that one.

Maybe you're not aware of how Nicolas has been playing? The last time he met Roddick was at (I think) Cinci last year and considering that was the "old" Nicolas who gave up easily and had no confidence...I don't see him going down as he did there.

Nicolas is back and some people just can't handle it :D .

Sjengster, I'm not sure about what you're trying to say by this, but I don't get what's wrong if said that Nicolas won a great match there, and yes, also mentioning his fighting spirit, because it was not easy to win that match being down 0-1 sets 4-5 with serve Hanescu :) ;)

Sjengster
03-06-2004, 09:57 PM
Neely, what I meant is that if you don't like a player, you're never going to appreciate their great play and good comebacks in matches. I admit I don't, when someone I dislike scrapes through a match that they nearly lost - I usually interpret it as the other guy failing to close his opponent out properly. I used examples of players whom people dislike: GoDom with Kiefer, me with Roddick, TBE with Henman.

Tennis724, I've no doubt Kiefer is playing with renewed confidence and it'll be a decent contest, but do you really see Roddick losing to a player outside the Top 20 on outdoor hardcourts in America? I don't.

KarstenBraasch#1
03-06-2004, 09:58 PM
Ha! Even the great Sjengster gets his match info mixed up. ;)
What Sjengster said was correct. But it doesn't change that I wwould like to see Andy in the final.

Neely
03-06-2004, 09:59 PM
my views concerning a probable match between Kiefer and Roddick:

okay, Roddick is the huge favorite here, I wouldn't be surprised or angry if Kiefer loses that, but you never know what will happen... I don't have anything against Andy, but I will root for Kiefer here of course :yeah:

and if Kiefer loses, he will know how to treat the fact that he has two finals in a row now.
3 weeks ago he was far away from a quarter final anywhere, now he has to final appearance in a row. What do you want more???!

Sjengster
03-06-2004, 10:03 PM
Ha! Even the great Sjengster gets his match info mixed up. ;)

No I didn't. :p I said that Spadea and Kiefer played twice on American hardcourts last year, Spadea's win was in straight sets and Kiefer's was in three having lost the first set 6-1, which is exactly right.

Don't worry GoDom, you're nowhere near azza's level yet. When I see you start wishing a career-threatening injury on Kiefer (as he did with Federer last year), then I'll start to worry. ;) I hope Spadea can win out of the three remaining players, after all he has not a title to his name and he's 30 this year. It would at least remove some of the truth from Agassi's comment about him being the ultimate journeyman.

Neely
03-06-2004, 10:04 PM
Neely, what I meant is that if you don't like a player, you're never going to appreciate their great play and good comebacks in matches.
yes I know, but that was not the point what I really disliked about the goDom's comment: namely those rude words against Kiefer... fucking asshole Kiefer is really a very poor language

for example, I don't like much Schalken's game either, but I give him credits if he wins a great one and you will never read me saying "fucking asshole Schalken"... NEVER :o

that's it... not more, not less...

Tennis724, I've no doubt Kiefer is playing with renewed confidence and it'll be a decent contest, but do you really see Roddick losing to a player outside the Top 20 on outdoor hardcourts in America? I don't.
no I don't... but many poeple, especially big Roddick fans, see Roddick never losing to anybody... but fact is that he's only a human being ;) and once he doesn't get his serve working, lots of players can beat him, even on american hardcourts

Tricky_Forehand
03-06-2004, 10:05 PM

Considering that I have tremendous belief in Nicolas? Yes, I can see him holding that trophy up tomorrow no matter who he plays.

I know I'll get backlash for this but oh well. Roddick is not that great. He's a lot of serve and not much else  . Roddick is beatable contrary to what some may think. As long as Nicolas goes out there ready to play his game and he sticks through any bad patches (like he did today and yesterday) then he could very well take out Junior.

But this is all assuming that Roddick will beat Vince tonight and that's not a given either. Roddick is still whining about a supposed back injury so I'm ready for that to be an excuse when he loses. ;)

Sjengster
03-06-2004, 10:08 PM
Losing two finals in a row would be pretty bad though, the next year you have all the difficulty of defending big points without the confidence of actually having won the title. OK, I know I'm starting to sound as though the match is already over, but I assure you Neely I would love to be proved wrong, I really would.

Neely
03-06-2004, 10:12 PM

I agree with you, but making the final and having to defend points is certainly better than nothing but 1st round exits

and, furthermore, Kiefer also knows that it was really tough to beat Johansson in Memphis, because he was serving so well, he's a hell of a player, he hits his baseline shots (especially his forehand) very hard... and he also knows that there exist worse finals losses than to Roddick on american outdoor hardcourt...

you have to improve step by step... and Kiefer did this.

I wondered when that might come up. ;)

I certainly agree that he's beatable, but this is a perfect surface for him and one can't underestimate the mental factor. I don't think it's any coincidence that Hewitt and Roddick, the two players with the least all-round ability out of the five New Balls who have won GS, have been the ones to finish year-end no. 1 (winning the last Slam of the year doesn't hurt either of course, it gives you a last-minute boost in the rankings); they can both grind out matches when they aren't playing well, and Kiefer has been doing the same this week but it's still a big step up in quality tomorrow. I wish him luck though. :)

I want to see Cousin Vinny wear Roddick into submission with the power of his grunt! That, and suffocate him with endless cross-court backhand rallies... it's the way to play him, I tells ya!

Neely
03-06-2004, 10:16 PM
Well, I consider myself a "big Roddick fan" but he's definitely beatable. The only player who really seems "unbeatable" to me right now is Federer (and Justine "I eat ballkids for lunch" Henin).

thanks, Tangerine... I appreciate your realistic view very much... I also have my favs and I wish to see them winning EVERY game, but I try to stay realistic

Ah, but Justine just yesterday fell to Svetlana "I eat former and current no. 1s for lunch" Kuznetsova, and Federer has already had a loss this year to eternal nemesis Henman. It's good to say that no-one on either tour, men's or indeed women's, is completely unbeatable. Unlike F1, for instance.

And Tennis724, you're entitled to your opinion and you're certainly not along in thinking that Roddick is nothing more than a serve-machine, but IMO people who believe that haven't really been watching his game close enough. ;)

And that's your opinion. But, you know what? I've been watching Roddick's game since he was 17/18 years old. And as strange as it sounds I liked the Andy Roddick who was still trying to find his game and as a result he really only had the good forehand but fought and thought his way through matches to win. These days, he does neither. His game became a problem (for me) when he became a Junior Sampras and became all about the serve and forgot about what else is important in a match.

And the other thing I don't like is how he chooses to compete. Instead of maturing (as certain ESPN commentators would like us to believe) he seems to be becoming more of a spoiled brat on court with every match and/or tournament win. He's not all that impressive off-court either.

It sounds like to me that you think that everyone should like Roddick because he's the greatest thing. Hardly. We just like different styles of play. Because I don't think the world revolves around Andy doesn't mean that I know less about what's going on in the game ;) .

unfortunately for kiefer he will be losing his 2nd final in consecutive weeks. A-rod should be able to beat Vince tonight and then take care of the german on sunday.

So that means Calleri/Arnold are in the final against Brians???

That puts Arnold above Etlis at #20 in the doubles ranking, and he is Argentina's #2 now... interesting... 4 Argentines are ranked 19 to 22...

That doesn't surprise me if his foot was bothering him a bit and he could use all the rest he can get for tomorrow. :D
exactly, he can need the rest for tomorrow... this match today was tough, lasted for over 2 hours and 30 minutes...

I remember Fox Mulder having a poster with the title "I WANT TO BELIEVE" that wanted to express his believe in ufos *g*... well, and I WANT TO BELIEVE, that Nicolas beats Andy tomorrow :D :D :D :p

Do you have respect for any player who's not Roddick?? Doesn't seem like it. If Vince isn't a good player he would've never dug himself out of the 200s two years ago.

I knew I would get that game comment. Roddick doesn't have an overall game. Is that better? He's become all serve and not a whole lot else.

All due respect to your comment. But Roddick is more than just a serve and barely anything else. Otherwise the Wayne Arthurs of the world would be much more successful, no?

Yes, the serve is Andy's main and biggest weapon. And he isn't exactly the most "complete" player out there. But not all Roddick fans think he's unbeatable thank you very much.

Spadea and Roddick are both very good players, each with their own game. Roddick has a power serve/forehand/baseliner type game while Spadea has a counterpunching game. I think Roddick always has troubles with Americans for some reason..

Havok
03-07-2004, 02:40 AM
bon, true Roddick doesn't have an overall good game, which we Roddick fans do believe, but he isn't ALL serve with a forehand like that. its impossible to be all serve if you've got that kind of a forehand, BUT that being said he does fall back on his serves to win matches. and im sorry but Spadea still isn't great in my books. i never said he sucked, but he just isn't that great. credit to him for picking himself back up in 2003, but i wanna see what he's able to do this year

do you remember his match in Memphis as he came away with a 7-5 3rd set win against Todd Martin?

it was obvious there that he had LOTS OF respect of Todd and Todd also didn't have much problems with his returns... Todd is a veteran and Roddick knew that

I just found it funny that Naldo would say that when Roddick is now having trouble. His supporters (ie you guys here at the moment) have a valid worry because I worry about Alex's shoulder and worry about Nicolas conquering his past injuries.

My humor comes because I expect his back to only be mentioned if he loses. I'll gladly admit if I'm wrong though.

the final will be Spadea vs Kiefer

how's that? :)

Pffft. Toolboy Spadea wins

Well that sucks. Now I'm rooting for Kiefer. I hope Kiefer crushes him and wins his first ATP title of 2004.

I hope Andy gets lots of rest and illegal drugs to fix whatever is ailing him.

I'm curious, Tangy. Is it the lesser of two evils for you? Or do you actually like Nicolas??

And if Roddick's back was his biggest problem...back injuries don't heal all that fast from my experience and it sounds like Roddick has continued to push through it. It's funny I've always heard the experts worry about his shoulder because of his delivery. Sounds like his back may have gotten the worst of it.

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: Vince

Too bad he won't be getting his first Title tomorrow though

Maybe a recent faulty technique? Brad and Doug should help look into it.

Congrats Vince

Andy is seeded for Indian Wells, and the seeds get a first round bye. The earliest he could play is Sunday, so he has almost a week off to heal what ails him. I think he'll be okay.

just got back from the match. roddick blew up.
he should have won in straight sets. brad gilbert was just shaking his head most of the 2nd and 3rd sets. pretty bad loss. A-rod should have won.

That's what it sounded like to me. It didn't sound like it was his back, unless his back was causing his serving problems which I suppose is likely. My mom did say that she could tell his back was bothering him during the QF Friday night but again, it doesn't sound like this was the problem in the SF. It sounded like Andy got a little complacent, maybe lost a little focus and just let it slip away. I mean when's the last time he was broken 3 straight times in a set.

In any case, it sounds like the loss made him mad. And as they say, the tough losses are the ones you can learn the most from, so hopefully he can do that and get past it.

But on the other hand, I am glad he has a week off before having to play again. Dougie's gotta help him take care of that back no matter what it takes.
