I haven't checked the weather for tomorrow but I certainly hope it's nice and sunny so for those that have to play two matches so they get as much rest as possible between matches. Tomorrow will be a long day.

I posted this in Thursday thread. May be it's better post it here.

OK! The weather forecast called for foggy morning (as expected with all the moisture in the air) and the sun will break up during the day. The weekend will be sunny and temperature back up to 80s.

Desperately hope they are correct this time.

Why am I so confident in Alex? Because I believe in him. And I've had that belief in him for nearly two years.

As a player, I think that he's awesome and I like his playing style. There's just something about how he plays and the desire that he has that I've never seen in anyone else. He's a fighter and I like that. There's not one particular thing about his game that I can point out. It's his overall game and how he puts it together.

As a person, it's hard not to like him and want him to succeed at whatever he does.

I don't know if that explains it for you or not.

Why he come here?

Because it was closer to home, they gave him a wildcard so he didn't have to qualify, and he can just drive down the freeway to Indian Wells when he's done here.

Roddick won 6-4, 6-3.

You beat me to it, Fee :D .

I wish that the match would've went 3 sets but, by the looks of it, it seems that Alex only got broken once in each set. And the real pissy thing about not having live scoring is that we don't know if Alex came close to breaking back.

Hopefully, someone that saw this match will post about it.

I'm a little deflated now with Alex out, but Nicolas is still in so that's a good thing. I'm still proud of him because he's had a tough go of it and probably didn't have a whole lot of confidence before he won his first round on Tuesday. Now he can take today's lessons and experience (whatever it was) and apply it to kicking ass in IW.

does anyone have a clue what's going on with Victor Hanescu this week?
he couldn't win much so far, most of the time he had to play challengers or didn't make it to the main draw... but this week already solid wins over Ferreira (even if Wayne is out of form recently, it's not that easy for a player like Hanescu to beat him 6-1 6-2), another nice win over Soderling who played really good and who was impressive in Marseille last week and a few moments ago he has also beaten Verkerk in straight sets!

is it just the good form or is there something special in this tournament? conditions? surface? (slower?)
or does he just feel comfortable in Arizona? :D

:haha: Are you serious??

If Roddick is a true competitor and he is (although I don't like or agree with how he competes) then it will matter to him whether he wins or loses. This may be a small tournament in the scheme of thigs but every win or loss affects his win/loss record for the year and how many points he accumalates.

I really dislike this attitude that only Slams and MS mean anything  . But I guess you need something to make you feel better if Roddick loses and the only way you can do that is put down the tournament and the players in it. Sad.

BTW, Lars Burgsmüller is IMO really a very nice guy... I've met him several times and had some short chats with him as he played tournaments (mostly challengers) in Germany. He didn't win many matches recently, but off-court he has most of the time lots of smiles on his lips an he speaks to you in a very gentle voice... I love his style, maybe some people would consider him as "too boring", but I love it :)

Yes, he's been doing great. He went further at AO then he's ever done before. Will be interesting to see if Federer and Roddick can hang on to their Wimbledon and USO wins this year. :)
tangy im so sorry i have to do this but:bs::bs::bs: Hewitt has already gotten to the 4th round of the AO. its his little "hump" that he can't get over, and i doubt he will. if he does, i seriously dont see him making it to the semis/finals/winning it.

Yea, I know I'm a rare breed but do you really think I care? :p

There are Vince fans out here, I hate to tell you. I like how he plays. He's sure as hell not the nicest guy out there (gross understatement) but I like how he plays.

I've spent time with the "two Vinces" :p so I do know that deep down there is a very nice guy. But there's also the guy who's more annoying than words can ever express.

I have asked the same some days ago and Lee told me then that this is one of the smallest tournaments and that it relies heavily on volunteers.

Yes it's ALL volunteers. Mostly older folk and they are horribly nice. I stood around and talked to many of them throughout my time at the tourney and they're all just lovely!

Tennis724, I thought Alex played well yesterday. He was right with Andy for a lot of the match. He returned him well, which is always a good start. But Andy pounced on anything he could, and his serve was working quite well for him. Alex attacked Andy's backhand something furious and Andy handled it extremely well, considernig how many backhands he mishits (and yes he really mishits quite a lot of them lol) Andy just played a solid match.

the Kiefer/Ginepri match was just 100% snoozeworthy. Robby should have won the second set TB. I believe he was up 5-2 at one point and had a couple SPs on his own serve. Absolutely boring. Plus, both guys had on such annoyed faces, it was like neither of them wanted to be there. And Kiefer was REALLY rude to a ballgirl.

Blake/Spadea was interesting. Spadea is good. They both return well and have good groundies. I thought after James roared back in the second that he could take the match, but then he went down a break. But at 4-2 he broke back and pushed a tiebreaker and he just couldn't hold on :( Spadea will be tough for Andy to beat, I think. Especially if his back is still problematic (which it is, he had the trainer come out last night)

kick it up a notch during your evening match

He did, esp in 2nd and 3rd sets. I was really proud of him.

Andy was not broken in the match and the TB hinged on one minibreak that Andy lost on the first point and couldn't get back. He then broke Gambill once in the second and twice in the third. Gambill's serve % went way down and Andy really put it together. He hit about 4 huge return winners at crucial points late in the match. It was truly incredible to see him raise his game so well in the 2nd and third set. I really thought he was out after he lost the 1st.

If Roddick is a true competitor and he is (although I don't like or agree with how he competes) then it will matter to him whether he wins or loses.

He absolutely competed well. He really raised his game in the second and third. As for how he competes, yes I am an Andy fan so I am biased, but he did a couple of incredibly good sportsmanship gestures in his matches yesterday, one of which could have cost him.

oh, I was incredibly impressed with Gambill. He served unbelievably, but his 1st serve % went down in the third and it cost him because Andy jumped on the second serve and hit some amazing returns, when it mattered.

I took lots of pics, of everyone's favorite players, I'm getting them done at Walgreens right now and will scan them next week when I get back to school. For those who have sites for other players, assuming I get some pics that actually came out ok, I am more than happy to share as long as you keep your Andy-bashing to a minimum ok? ;) *shakes hands*

that sounds good... I really like the atmosphere at these little, more "familiar" tournaments also, it's not only about GRAND SLAM GRAND SLAM GRAND SLAM and GRAND SLAM what many people are only talking about all the time.

Yes, all the volunteers (senior citizens) I met are sooooooo nice. Since I hang outside the entrance to stadium court, the one nearest the practice courts, I ended up talked to the lady guarding the entrance there. She is great. So as other volunteers.

Thank you for that, Bunk! I had a feeling that Alex played a good match just by the score but to hear it confirmed makes me feel much better :D

I heard that he was rude to a ballkid in San Jose too. But then again in his comments after he beat Robby he was not a happy man so maybe he was all around pissy that day. In his comments today, he doesn't sound like a happy camper either.

So nice to hear someone else compliment Vince. He's not the nicest soul in the world  but he's a fighter and strong competitor.

I've been lucky that every time I've talked to him that he's been in a good to pleasant mood. There was only one time when he was rude (not sure that's the right word to describe it) but that one time was more my fault :o .

You're welcome :) He seems like a fine player to me. But keep in mind my knowledge of the real technical aspects of the tennis game are next to nothing. I was impressed at his returning of Andy's serve. And he also effectively dropshotted him a couple times. Though props to Andy for running every single last damn one of them down lol

both Keifer and Ginepri were pretty sour in their match. It was not at all exciting. I guess Kiefer just made a bad first impression on me, whereas the first time I saw Robby a few days prior, he was very impressive. Plus, Robby lost so I forgive the less-than-sunny disposition a little more than of the guy that won ;)

Well... don't get me wrong, I thought he was one of the least inspiring people I saw all week. I saw matches like Soderling and Malisse which can only be described as pretty, and players like Blake, Roddick, Bogomolov, Ginepri, Malisse, etc, who are actually interesting to watch... Spadea and Kiefer were just snooze-worthy to me.

Yes, I got a couple of really nice ones of him (Alex), I'll let you know when I get them scanned. I didn't take any of Kiefer specifically, but Friday morning he was on court the same time as Andy so he's in the background of a couple of my Andy pics ;)

I'm not to good at technical aspects either ;) . But it makes me happy when I hear others appreciate Alex's play even when he's not the one they're pulling for. Your description makes me feel better for deciding to buy this match from someone with the Tennis Channel :D .

well that's good :) Yep, I'd say he shows a lot of promise. It was obvious Andy had more experience and more patience and stuff like that, but Alex definitely played solidly as far as I could tell.

haha well that's my opinion I guess. they're pretty much from the side b/c that's where my seat was, and there's one of him walking back to get a towel and one of him leaning over ready to receive serve. They came out very well and I have a 170mm zoom on my camera and I was close, so they're pretty close-up. There's a closeup of him leaving the court after the match but it's a little blurry/out of focus unfortunately.
